'Sea Hag' pleads not guilty in death

Carolyn "Sea Hag" Dukeshire, 62, of Conch Key, on Thursday pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in the July 29 shooting death of Marty Mazur, 64, also of Conch Key.

Mazur reportedly was sitting behind his home, drinking a beer with a friend, when Dukeshire approached and asked for a beer. Mazur refused to give her one, and Dukeshire allegedly left and returned with a gun, according to a Sheriff's Office report. Dukeshire was appointed a public defender; and her next court appearance is to be in November, said Assistant State Attorney Tanner Demmery. Prosecutors have not decided if they will peruse the death penalty, Demmery said. County Judge Ruth Becker will be the presiding judge. Dukeshire remains in Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island under no bail.

Attempted-murder trial scheduled

The trial of a 20-year-old Marathon woman accused of trying to kill a 2-month-old last August has been scheduled for Aug. 20. Elizabeth Garcia, of 240 Sombrero Beach Road, is charged with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly trying to kill the baby girl by hitting her in the head with a big rock. Garcia is also charged with felony child abuse.

She had been arrested a week before the alleged crime for reportedly pulling a knife on deputies at her home, according to a Monroe County Sheriff's Office press release.

The infant cannot be identified under state laws that protect the identity of child abuse victims.

Garcia remains in Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island under no bail.
