Key West CitizenAugust 11, 2017

Carleen Moore Oropeza, 82, of Key West, Florida, passed peacefully on Aug. 9, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was born on July 10, 1935, on Love Lane in Key West to Hugh and Elizabeth Moore. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and sister, Joanne; in-laws, Joseph and Angelina; and sister-in-law, Dorothy.

Carleen is survived by her adoring husband of 63 years, Macho; her devoted children, Scott (Beth), Kim, Todd (Alicia); her loving grandchildren, Gregory (Lauren), Megan (Dan), Katelyn (Carter), Brooke (Daniel), Blake; and her precious great-grandchildren, Cruz, Paislee, and three due to arrive in the coming months; her brother, Gary (Kathy); brothers-in-law, Kaki and Danny (Chomi); and numerous nieces and nephews.

She had a heart of gold and the soul of an angel. Carleen’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She truly loved to give to others and had a tremendous passion for animals.

A devout Catholic, Carleen was very involved with St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West through the years. In 1953, she graduated from the Convent of Mary Immaculate. Carleen and Macho were married in 1955 at St. Mary Star of the Sea. In the early 1970s, she founded the St. Bede’s religious gift shop, today known as the Basilica’s gift shop. Carleen donated the first shipment, and Macho built the gift shop shelves. She served as president of the St. Bede’s Guild, as well as president of the Alumni Association of the Mary Immaculate School. An avid collector of dolls and teddy bears, she also served as president of the local Doll Club.

Her warmth radiated and her laugh was contagious. She always reassured family and friends with “‘Dahlin’, everything will be fine.”

The funeral service will be held this Saturday, Aug. 12, at 3 p.m. at the Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Star of the Sea Outreach Mission.

God needed help, so He sent for a special angel.
