WEST SUMMERLAND KEY — A 28-year-old Marathon man was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami early Wednesday after crashing into the guardrail at Mile Marker 34, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
His condition was unknown at press time. The man’s name was not immediately released pending notification of next-of-kin.
The 1999 Toyota RAV4 was northbound when it ran off U.S. 1 at 3:55 a.m., reports say.
Troopers do not believe the driver was wearing a seat belt as “hair follicles belonging to the driver were still embedded in the cracked windshield,” reports say.
Neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be factors in the crash, reports say, and no other vehicles were reported to be involved.
The driver will likely be cited for careless driving and failure to wear a seat belt, according to the FHP.
