CUDJOE KEY — A woman was airlifted with a serious head injury and her boyfriend was arrested after a violent domestic dispute, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Anthony Velez, 36, of Cudjoe Key, was charged with aggravated battery.
Anelle Hernandez, 32, was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami Saturday night where she was listed in stable condition.
Deputies responded to a home on John Avery Lane at 6:40 p.m. to reports of an argument between Velez and Hernandez. The couple live with Hernandez’ parents, reports say.
Hernandez’s mother told dispatchers that said she tried could not separate the couple and then called back a few minutes later to say her daughter was bleeding from her head, reports say.
When Deputy Wendy Negron arrived, she followed Hernandez’ father to a bedroom of the house. As she walked in, she heard the suspect say, “she pushed me, I pushed her back,” reports say. She then saw Hernandez on the floor of a bedroom, unconscious and bleeding from a head wound.
According to the mother, the two had been at Marvin Key earlier in the day. When they returned, the argument started in the driveway of the house and then moved to the bedroom. She said the two were yelling and kept closing the door to the room, report say.
The mother she said she later saw her daughter on the floor with blood around her head and Velez on top of her, reports say.
Velez was taken to Monroe County Detention Center and was released on Sunday. It was unclear what his bail amount was or if he had a bail.
