Woman arrested for DUI after fleeing deputies
October 11, 2017
MARATHON — A 60-year-old woman who fled from officers was arrested for DUI after deputies used spikes to stop her car, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Janice Hastings of Marathon was charged with fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.
Deputies responded to McDonald’s at 6:30 p.m. Sunday to reports of a woman driving recklessly and arrived to find the woman, later identified as Hastings, in a 2005 Cadillac in the drive thru blocking traffic, reports say.
A manager got the woman to move to the parking lot where she was approached by a deputy. She reportedly jumped a curb and drove away on U.S. 1 when she saw the deputy.
Hastings refused to stop as deputies used spikes to puncture her tires at Coco Plum Drive, but she continued to drive on flat tires, reports say.
The Cadillac began to fishtail while she was driving on rims and deputies stopped southbound traffic due to the danger. The car eventually stopped at Mile Marker 57.2, but she refused to open the door, so deputies broke a window and removed her, reports say.
A witness told deputies she saw the Cadillac leaving a bar and saw it run a red light and hit the median several times.
Hastings refused to participate in field sobriety exercises, refused to take breath tests and reportedly bit a deputy who was attempting to remove gum from her mouth, reports say.
She was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center in Marathon.
