UPDATED WITH PHOTO: One building damaged in late night Duval Street fire

By SPECIAL TO THE CITIZEN

Investigators today remain on the scene of a Sunday night fire on Duval Street, looking into the cause of the blaze that shut down three small businesses and threatened  Margaritaville and the historically significant San Carlos Institute.

Firefighters were called out just after 10 p.m. Sunday and had the fire under control by 1 a.m. Duval Street reopened to traffic mid-morning today, though the sidewalks remained barricaded in order to keep foot traffic safely away from the damaged building, said city spokeswoman Alyson Crean.

Two art galleries and a small restaurant were severely damaged by the fire. The San Carlos and Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville sustained some smoke damage. However, both are expected to reopen quickly once the investigation is complete.

The Key West Fire Department rolled all available units, and the Naval Air Station Key West provided additional manpower in fighting the blaze.

Fires in Key West’s historic downtown can be particularly challenging, says Key West Fire Chief David Fraga.

“To find that much fire upon arrival and keep it from spreading to adjacent buildings is a testament to our firefighters’ dedication to duty,” Fraga said. “Their aggressive attack prevented what could have easily been a devastating situation.”

Fraga says the department was grateful for the assistance of firefighters from NAS Key West.

“The additional manpower was vital,” he said, “to keep our guys fresh and rehabbed.”

The state fire marshal’s office is assisting in the investigation. An early assessment didn’t reveal any signs of foul play. Fraga says the investigation could go on through the night.

Duval street fire

My hat [goes] off to the key west fire department. I'm a firefighter in connecticut, and key west is like our 2nd home. I must say you guys had a great stop. With the way the buildings are attached you should have lost the whole block. Give your self a pat on the back. great job. Good to see the navy helped you out. JIM

other crews

dont forget monroe county stations 8 & 9

THE FIRE

ITS SHOWS THAT THE KEY WEST FIRE DEP. NEEDS BETTER TRUCKS OR BETTER FIRE HYDRANTS, BECAUSE THEY NEED OUTSIDE HELP AND THE WATER COMPANY NEED TO HELP THEM TO. IF I WAS THE OWNER OF THE BUILDING I9 WILL CHECK WITH MY LAYER AND SE IF THE CITY IS UP TO FEDERAL CODE ON THE FIRE HYDRANTS IF NOIT GO AFTER THE CITY N CODE ENFORCEMENTS.

Mr. Wow

Is this the paid guys trying to get credit?

WOW!!

Can I get a job working at the Citizen? I am good at WP and MS WORD and I can use spell check, too. [Citizen], [Substantial], [air]

sorry to hear

Sorry to hear about the business owner's losses, in this economic environment it is the last thing they need. I hope Montage opens back up, they had some really original stuff and I'll miss seeing the owner on Duval street if they don't. She is beautiful and a good lady.

Great stop!

It looks like y'all put a great stop on that fire! That entire block could have gone up.

More than just a "small restaurant"

La Creperie, Sylvie and Yolande are a special part of the daily lives of so many locals, a thread in the fabric of our community that makes it uniquely beautiful. Everyone I know is rooting for their speedy return to business. And Thank God no one was hurt.
