Superintendent says he was not told of repeated credit card misuse

Monroe County Schools Superintendent Randy Acevedo was warned more than a year ago about one of his wife Monique's school credit card charges, the school district's chief financial officer said Tuesday.

It also was revealed Tuesday that the district apparently has withheld requested records pertaining to Randy Acevedo's school credit card use. School Board member Steve Pribr...

A response from the Governor

Here is the response I received from Gov. Christ's Office when I wrote to ask him to remove Randy from his position until after a full investigation has been done: "Thank you for contacting Governor Charlie Crist. The Governor appreciates your concerns about Randy Acevedo the local Superintendent of Schools and asked that I respond on his behalf. The state attorney should be contacted by those who believe locally elected officials have violated criminal laws. Contact information for the State Attorney can be contacted online at http://www.keyssao.org/.The Ethics Commission should be contacted by those who believe elected officials have used their office for private gain. That address is Post Office Drawer 15709, Tallahassee, Florida, 32317-5709, and the telephone number is (850) 488-7864. Voters elect their county officials to manage local government business. Those dissatisfied with local officials' performance can always make their views known directly to those officials. To assist you, I shared your concerns with the Governor's Legal Staff. Thank you again for writing. For more information about the Governor's initiatives, please visit our website at www.flgov.com." I guess he's not going to do anything either. The only way will be to get Dennis Ward involved.

Teachers need to be teaching...

Teachers need to be teaching not gossiping in school. My 2 kids came home yesterday from Coral Shores telling me about how the teachers are discussing this mess in class. One of them said they spent most of the class listening to the teacher complain about how she had not gotten a raise becase Mrs. Acevedo had stolen the money. The other teacher was making fun of the situation. I asked several of my kids' friends if they heard the same thing and they said their teachers were talking about the same thing. I would hope that the professionals that are at CSHS and the other schools - will do what they should be doing and TEACH OUR KIDS. I know that this hits close to home especially with the impending budget cuts - but everyone needs to stay focused on what is most important and that is the students and their education.

REQUIRED SUBJECT MATTER

THIS SCANDAL SHOULD BE REQUIRED SUBJECT MATTER IN SOCIAL STUDIES AND HISTORY CLASS....NO WAIT... I BELIEVE THEY ARE TAKING DANCE LESSONS.....

So its allright to cheat the tax payers

but its not right for the teachers to discuss the facts. Your a tattle tailer, Im sure they were speaking at class change or at lunch. Dont rag on the only honest professionals left in the school disrict. It is well known that any discention at the schools brought on bullying retribution by the Administration and even firing. Every one is worried about keeping the schools going. The teachers have the right to question this travesty. If anyone has put our education system in danger it is not two teachers discussing the issues; it was Randy Acevedo.

Not at lunch

No it was not discussed at lunch or at class change...it was discussed in class - when they were supposed to be discussing things other than gossip. As for being a "tattle tailer" - I think not - especially since I did not reveal the classes that this happened in. I did not say that the teachers did not have the right to question what is happening...just don't do it when you are working. And I was not "ragging" on any of the honest professionals because those teachers were the ones who were actually TEACHING the subject they are being paid to teach - not gossiping, spreading rumors, or [complaining] about not being paid enough! Since I too am a teacher in this district - ah yes - I can speak from personal experience that the teachers should be TEACHING and save the outside discussion for just that OUTSIDE or the TEACHERS LOUNGE!

It has become obvious...

Superintendent Randy Acevedo ought to tender his resignation for the good of the school district. If he cares about the kids, he will. His time is now being spent dealing with investigations, allegations, inquiries and the like, rather than on the business of running the schools. He has himself become a distraction.

Sir, do the honorable and noble thing and resign. The healing must start sooner rather than later. People are hurting financially and misconduct will not be tolerated in this environment. Read the comments here the past several days. They tell the story.

concerned in Sugarloaf

misconduct will not be tolerated

ANYTIME - never for a public figure unless of course your part of the Bubba Law system

Who Else Beside the Acevedos

I hope the investigators look beyond the Acevedos. I can think of several admin. people who probably use their school credit card like their own. Investigators: keep looking ... far and wide, please.

First Warning 18 Months Ago

Is the auditor and the state attorney going to investigate other employees with cards? My bet the Acevedos are not alone.

Heads need to roll at school board

If school board policy allows even "occasional" personal purchases on district credit cards, even if the charges are reimbursed, something is wrong and all school district credit card accounts need to be scrutinized... not to mention that FAR too many district employees have the cards. If there is any truth to what appears to be very egregious misuse of Mrs. Acevedo's card, not only should Mr. Acevedo immediately resign, a vigorous criminal investigation must ensue. Plenty of people are in prison for thefts of much less than is apparent. There can be no confidence that taxpayers are not being ripped off on a grand scale, given what is already apparent.

Roll Heads

The heads should roll at the Monroe County Schools DISTRICT OFFICE, that is where the spending problem is centered. The School Board started the auditing process.

But wait, it gets worse...

Wait until Friday!!!!!

I can't believe this.

Oh my gosh, is it going to get worse? Can it possibly be any worse? I can't believe this. This is so bad!

More records?

Do you think there will be more wrongdoing uncovered in the Supt's credit card records?

Have you forgotten?

The reason her records were withheld from the Citizen and the public for so long is most likely the reason his records are being "reviewed closely" and are being withheld for so long. Something smells fishy. If you were auditing this, wouldn't you double and triple check after what you found on her statements??? That makes me wonder, if there are any questionable charges on his account, will he accuse his wife of stealing his P card from his wallet in the middle of the night to pull an all nighter at Wallgreens or on QVC? 2 days till Friday. Time will tell.

Discretionary Spending

Each year teachers are given a small amount of money with which to buy school supplies for their classrooms. Unfortunately, all money that was not yet spent by the teachers because they were doing the mature thing and budgeting was taken back by the school district. Now teachers are spending their own money to buy things such as pencils, paper, markers, and other necessities. To find out that there are employees making personal purchases is to say the least a slap in the face of every hard working teacher. Remember the reason the school district gets money is because the teachers are teaching students. Shouldn't administration be working for the good of the students and teachers instead of themselves?

Don't forget the teachers who were laid off last year.

I'm in NYC reading this nonsense. What about the teachers with Masters and Phd's who were laid off because of budget cuts last year. Myself included. I made three white board markers last an entire school year. I taught at Marathon High School. Acevedo and his wife are pathetic and personify what is and has always been wrong in American public education. Greed and maintaining the status quo.

This is so bad.

This is so bad. Oh my gosh, I can't believe how bad this is. This is just really bad.

nice article on the front page of this education magazine

Kudos

Kudos to Peyton Wolcott for taking notice!

Randy acts like Monique pulled the wool over his eyes

With all the stuff Monique bought Randy could not figure out that she was blowing huge amounts of cash? They were in forclosure! How could you not figure she was not still spending? I guess his gorilla sized clothes fit him. Livin high on the Hog!

Pointing the fingers

Everyone is pointing fingers at everyone else. The truth in the matter is, the responsible parties need to take whatever consequence there [are] and learn from this very TOUGH lesson!!

The fingers are pointed at one person! RANDY ACEVEDO!

Randy is pushing his wife in front of a school bus to cover himself. He will do anything not to give up that 100 million dollar budget of power at the school district!

He approved it

He approved it. He also profited from it. He's every bit as responsible. (Just like Madoff's family has profited from his crimes.)

Are you kidding me, SHE is

Are you kidding me, SHE is and should be held responsible for her OWN actions and spending spree.

POs

When there are no checks and balances in a system or when the checks and balances are manipulated - as is the case in this situation, it does not matter whether the embezzlement is done with a credit card or with a purchase order. Discretionary funds at the disposal of key administrators in the District, are filled with taxpayer dollars, and accessed with impunity, giving them the license to spend and order "WHATEVER IT TAKES". You bet that purchase orders have been used in the same way as the purchase cards - especially by district personnel with access to discretionary accounts!!! With the position of superintendent comes the trust - that this person will be working for the taxpayers and the electorate by ensuring that a quality education is delivered to all students, that teachers are given the tools and resources needed to do the job and that the system is transparent. He has just batted three out of three and I believe this time has struck out!! It is not quite the ninth inning, but his whole team is involved and will suffer the consequences!! This mess is a prime example of greed, conspiracy to cover one's tracks, and is the epitome of arrogance. If Randy Acevedo is an ethical person then he will take full responsibility for the misuse of funds entrusted to him and resign...OR...he will continue to throw under the bus - his wife, Mike Henriquez, Frankie St James, Kathy Reitzel and the Finance Department. He of course, will know nothing about any of the funding/spending/purchasing abuses- proving that he is truly a trustworthy, ethical, insightful and observant leader! Balderdash!!!

Get your Baseball lingo correct.

If you bat 3 out of 3. Or 3 for 3, then you had a great game. It means the opposite of striking out. Maybe you should stick to Broadway lingo and "break a finger."

broken metaphors

That's funny...break a finger....my finger isn't broken but it is up!! Maybe you don't understand sarcasm..you bet he had a great game..but the game is almost over...and he wasn't doing what he was charged to do...but he will be charged...do you think that is foreshadowing?

I really have mixed feelings

I really have mixed feelings about this whole credit card scandal. Here it is I'm working for "pennies" not knowing if I'm going to have a job come next school year and the "big dogs" at the school board are spending tax payers money like it's their own!! I can understand using the card to buy milk, or something "small" with intentions on paying the monies back at the end of the month but come on a "TABLE SAW", why is the Adult Ed Coordinator buying a table saw or a $59.97 shower head and let's not forget to mention over $4,000.00 in "HOME" furnishings? This is a slap in the face to the hard-working employees of M.C.S.B. My thoughts and prayers go out to Randy and his family, their going to need them!!!!!

Why would someone who is

Why would someone who is making over 80K a year need to use the school credit card for any personal purchases? With that kind of money she should have plenty to get her stuff on her own card or with cash.

the home furnishings

the home furnishings included a chandelier. This is disgusting! and now the $2999 purchase for some computer part really only costs $120.

Maybe you should bake them a cake!

you can put a file in it. They are going to need that too! Stop complaining about John D. and Steve P. If they were not there this *&%$ would still be going on. We need change!

Mixed Feelings

If you are a school employee you should know the Board doesn't spend money they ok the budget submitted by the [superintendant] and his staff. Randy is the one who told the board, "don't micro manage me", now we know why. The "big dogs" are at the Admin Building spending tax payers money, do you really understand what is happening? I agreed, every hard working school employee should be unhappy with Randy and Monique, but channel your angry feeling toward them. As for your prayers, they will get a copy of the good book when they enter the Stock Island Hilton.

Why Now?

If it was the standard practice by Superintendent Robert Walker, Superintendent Mike Lannon, and Superintendent Padget, why is there such a fury over it now? Think for yourselves people. Look closer than the headlines and stories that are being written by certain School Board Members. Don't let the Key West Citizen tell you how to think.

Why Now

The key words you used are "standard practices." This should never have been a "standard practice." I guess it is just bad timing for this administration, or about time that someone actually stood up and did what was supposed to be done years ago IF it was done years ago. As for the School Board Members and the paper - THANK GOODNESS WE HAVE SOMEONE WHO IS WILLING TO TELL US WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH OUR MONEY!!!!!

They all should be brought up on charges!

The fury is because the Acevedos have taken the illegal practice to new heights. Stop trying to spread the crime and water it down. Your Randy [likely] is guilty of a lot more than a $300.00 pair of sunglasses. Time will tell and it will all come out! You are just as bad as Randy and his gang!

pathetic defense

The Key West Citizen is reporting only facts that required legal action to obtain from the school district. School board members do not write news stories in the Citizen. The Citizen does not editorialize in their coverage of this scandal, unlike the Keynoter.

The Keynoter

The Keynoter backs Randy to the hilt. They backed him in the election against Doctor Fred Colvard. The are rumored to be connected with the Marathon based Bubbas. Dont let anything they say sway you. The Citizen is the only paper reporting the facts. The citizen shoukld be commended and so should John Guerra for this in depth reporting on this issue.

JOHN GUERRA ROCKS!

John Guerra Rocks!

Where was the Finance Director for the last 17 months?

If the Finance Director says she told Randy about an unauthorized use of the card and Randy, according to the story in the paper (which comes from the mouth of Pribramsky) fixed the problem and made sure the airline ticket was paid back 18 months ago, then where was she for the LAST 17 MONTHS? All of a sudden she got religion when she was politically coaxed by a school board member. She needs to answer for what she did or didn't do. If it was wrong, then it was wrong for 17 months. You can't expect Randy to know what was happening if it was never brought to his attention by the person who was supposed to bring it to his attention.

Finance Director

That's what I say. What's up with the finance people. Everyone wants to place blame on only Randy and Monique says they are to blame but what about the finance people who covered this up. They should be fired. That's just ridiculous "what should we label this incase we get audited" if that isn't a cover up I don't know what is. We have teachers out here paying for all kinds of stuff for there classroom they need a credit card with the amount of there own money they pay for.

YGTBKM

Is this a lame attempt to defend the criminals or just incredible ignorance?

Who will utlimately pay for this?

We will... Did you know the Board will be hiring a forensic auditing firm as well as outside legal counsel? Hmmmmm. Are Monroe County citizens now paying the debts of some of our "well intentioned" school board members who innocently grabbed the wrong credit card? So you think this is silly and undeserving of front page news coverage? This is a question of the ethical conduct of public officials, not one of dollars and "sense". IF YOU ARE NOT OUTRAGED YOU REALLY ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND MISSING THE POINT!!! Stay tuned Monroe County taxpayers, this rabbit hole will prove deeper than some think... hence the need for outside legal counsel and forensic auditors soon to be hired by the Board and paid for by you and me.

Who Well Pay

I would think if charges are made against the Acevedo's and others, they should be required to pay all legal and auditing expenses along with paying back the Monroe Cty School District. The Board has no other choice but to hire Forensic and outside counsel.

STOP TRYING TO DRAW PEOPLE AWAY FROM THE REAL ISSUE

Your right about the up coming expenses. You fail to admit that we are here because your boy Randy and his beautiful wife Monique pulled these shinanigans. You would rather sweep this all under the rug. Your next arguement will probably be that this is all over a $300.00 dollar pair of Caviar sunglasses. If your were so worried about your tax dollars you should have stood up months ago and yelled about Acevedo's mismanagement then! You should be ashamed your just as bad as he is!!!!!

Saving Randy What ever it takes!

This stinks. Walker and Reitzel warned him 18 months ago. Come on! this is. . . They should have warned him everyday. He warned "poor" Monique 18 months ago too! This nothing more than a defense for Randy Acevedo and to throw Monique under the train. Why is Randy Acevedo still involved in this investigation? He should have gone on leave until this is all done. He has his high priced attorney and he still is running around giving statements to defend himself and to some degree his wife. This is incredible that this is allowed to happen. Anyone else would have been suspended as was the Plantation Key School bookkeeper who was suspended without pay after administrators discovered discrepancies in a day-care fund. I wrote the Govenor several times. This is disgusting that they have wronged the tax payer and then go and try to defend it. Incredible!

total bs!

this is total BS, why is the person who blew the whistle all of the sudden getting negitive press? if not for the district people this would still be going on. place the blame where it belongs Monique and her boss, by the way who is her boss and how has he stayed out of this? whoever moniques supervisor is should be in the hot seat, not the accountant, who does not supervise departments!

BS? You are u-n-i-n-f-o-r-m-e-d

The only reason that the . . . whistle blower accountant did her job is that she did not want to get in trouble. If it was not for the state ordering that the finished audit each year would be signed by both the Superintendent and the head accountant it would never had come out. Before this she just let it go. She was not liable then. Randy is liable as well. You need to check out the facts!

Good post

Finally somebody who has their facts straight! The only reason she did not come forward sooner is she was never liable and it was not her responsibility. This year was the first year the state auditors require both the Superintendent and the CFO sign off and certify that there is no fraud. She never had to sign that until this year and she stepped up and said....NO MORE SIZE 48 pants and 4X Jerzees for you ACEVEDOS!!!!!!!!! The fat has been cut!

I'm not impressed!!!!

That is my guess as well. Sadly, most people will only do the right thing, when their backs are against the wall or when someone is looking. This has been going on for years and she and her department was well aware of it.
