FHP releases names of crash victims

The Florida Highway Patrol has released the names of the people involved in two separate motorcycle accidents Friday.

Joel Christopher Neurath, 24, of Big Pine Key, was killed in a single-vehicle accident around 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Neurath was traveling south on Kyle Boulevard on Big Pine Key on his 2001 Suzuki when, for an unknown reason, he traveled into the ditch on the west side of the road and struck a utility pole, reports day. Neurath was ejected into the northbound land of the road and came to a final rest in the ditch, reports say.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. It's not known if alcohol was a factor in the crash, reports say.

In a second accident around 11:25 a.m. Friday, Nancy Riley, 64, address unknown, was attempting to cross U.S. 1 on foot near Mile Marker 98 when she was struck by a motorcycle traveling south on U.S. 1, reports say. The motorcycle was driven by Brett D. Griffin, 38, of Key Largo.

Riley was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami with critical injuries, reports say. She remains in the Intensive Care Unit, according to a hospital representative Sunday evening.

Griffin also sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier. A nurse in the Intensive Care Unit said she could not comment on his condition.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash. FHP is investigating both accidents.

FHP releases names of crash victims

FHP needs to use a compass when reporting direction of travel. Big Pine Key victim was traveling west on Kyle Blvd. not south, and was ejected in the east bound lane not north bound lane. Anyone traveling Kyle Blvd. knows the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Since victim was pronounced dead at the scene, FHP did not test for alcohol, FHP should not have commented in report that it was unkown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

FHP did not test for alcohol

FHP doesn't test for alcohol on a person who is deceased on the scene of an accident, that is done by the county's Medical Examiner at autopsy. When the toxicology report comes back , in many weeks to months , then FHP can complete their investigation. FHP commented that they do not know if alcohol was a factor because that is the truth, they will know , in a few months when the report comes back.
