Monique Acevedo has reported to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island, where she was fingerprinted, photographed, booked and then released on her own recognizance, officials said.
The former Monroe County school district adult education coordinator was accompanied by her husband, Schools Superintendent Randy Acevedo, when she arrived at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Monique Acevedo on Thursday morning informed the State Attorney's Office of her plans to surrender on an arrest warrant issued Wednesday.
Acevedo left her father's house in Creedmor, N.C., today -- an hour before North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation agents arrived there to arrest her, handcuff her and take her to jail, Assistant State Attorney Mark Wilson said. She flew to Miami and this afternoon is driving herself back to the Florida Keys, Wilson said.
She was charged with performing an organized scheme to defraud in excess of $50,000 and grand theft in excess of $100,000. Each charge could bring her 30 years in jail if she's convicted.

In this economic environment, stealing from taxpayers and children over a 5 year period (or longer) is NOT a simple 'mistake'. It's a HUGE CRIME and honest, hard-working citizens have the right to be outraged.
Maybe it's time YOU examined your own personal traits and your own life. Maybe you'll find that YOU are the one 'waiting to get caught' and the rest of us have nothing that makes us worry about being 'caught'.
AND people have every right to be bitter when they've been robbed, their children have been robbed, and you see smirking faces of the perps on the front page. All it does is make people MORE angry. It's time that we hold ALL elected and public officials accountable for their misdeeds and thievery from the taxpayers.
And of course, since you clearly think that systematic, long-term scheming and theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars are simply a 'mistake', then I shudder to think what YOUR crimes are, that you have clearly justified in your head and amongst your close friends, as 'mistakes'. And YOU are running around lose on the street? YOU need to be in jail with the rest of the crooks and thieves.
