Monique Acevedo being processed at jail

Monique Acevedo has reported to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island, where she was fingerprinted, photographed, booked and then released on her own recognizance, officials said.

The former Monroe County school district adult education coordinator was accompanied by her husband, Schools Superintendent Randy Acevedo, when she arrived at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Monique Acevedo on Thursday morning informed the State Attorney's Office of her plans to surrender on an arrest warrant issued Wednesday.

Acevedo left her father's house in Creedmor, N.C., today -- an hour before North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation agents arrived there to arrest her, handcuff her and take her to jail, Assistant State Attorney Mark Wilson said. She flew to Miami and this afternoon is driving herself back to the Florida Keys, Wilson said.

She was charged with performing an organized scheme to defraud in excess of $50,000 and grand theft in excess of $100,000. Each charge could bring her 30 years in jail if she's convicted.

I never have written one of these things before tonight

I never have written one of these things before tonight but now I am so struck by the lack of bond and the customary night in jail that I feel we need to test for corruption in our judicial system as well.

corruption

I have had a case before the citizens review board for more than three years, and thay still wont close it or do there duty ( complaint file number 06-017 ) I did win in criminal and civil court but not in the CRB thay just wont do there job because of corruption ( this case has many political ramifications )

Actually, with Acevado being

Actually, with Acevado being released....thats how our justice system works. Its called a R.O.R. release. It has nothing to do with the Bubba system. Heres how it works. Pre-Trial looks at your background, your community ties, If you have assets *houses/property* and they take that into consideration. Yes she pissed off alot of Monore County by [allegedly] doing what she did..but it does not change the fact that she met the critera for R.O.R. release. If they would have held her to satisfy our sence of justice, that would have been legally wrong. Mrs. Acevado is not going anywhere, she may be free until her trial date...but its gunna happen. Relax Key West.

bail and jail

stop with all of your comments. the assistant state attorney should keep his mouth shut. he already laid the foundation for appeal. candidly, he should be removed from the case because of his prejudicial disposition (well documented by his emotional and personal comments). the judge knows what he's doing. he has as much, if not more integrity than any of you in key west. you conchs have nothing better to do than take shots at people. watch-out, you shouldn't throw stones. fyi- bail in this case is nothing more than symbolic. monique is not going anywhere. everyone from the members of the school board to the DA' office should simply shut up. you're like the keystone cops down there. try to act professional and represent key west with pride, not with infintilism.

SPOT ON!

Yet another person who seems to understand that there is such thing as a system of justice to deal with people who have been charged with a crime. I agree that the ASA should be removed. He should have kept silent and not commented as he did (some of those comments were completely false). Everything will come out in the wash. All this belly-aching changes nothing. She will be processed through the system and if she did wrong, she will be punished accordingly. I would hate to think that whatever happens to her turns out to be more severe because of the political aspirations of the State Attorney (i.e., not being impartial and fair for fear he won't be re-elected). Frankly, I didn't vote for him because I don't trust him. I hope this case is removed from Monroe County-I wouldn't trust a jury pool from this County now.

More intimidation?

Do you ever let up with the Bubba intimidation? Too bad you can't look in the faces of every one of us who posts here, so you can threaten with personal harm as you do in your every day life. If you think the judge (Duck Trial opinion) has integrity, you're living in another world. Oh wait - I forget. You're in BUBBA WORLD!

I vote

Simply said "I vote". The judge, the superintendent and all the other politicians should take notice. I have seen 2 other accused embezzlers locked up in past months, now this [woman] is let out on her [own] recognizance... I cant say the word. She is accused of stealing so much more than the other two combined. I will vote by boycotting them in the street and at the polls. Folks remember you are supposed to be honored members of the community. This woman has been charged with committing the ignoble act of robbing our school system. Any person who does this is the lowest form of scum. I am disgusted with the lack of bail and wonder how you all expect us to react. To the person who said we should leave the accused alone. Our system is based on challenging our leaders and those who serve us. It is our duty and right as citizens to debate and seek justice for all, especially from public figures who betray that trust. Not guilty has meant nights in jail and bails to others similarly charged. Take notice those of you in office now. I see your actions and you will feel my ballot.

Well Said!!

Very Well Said! Thank you!

jail time

Monique should be glad she wasnt made to stay in jail, that blouse she was wearing in her picture was punishment enough youd think with that high limit card she wouldve bought something a little less repulsive..... quess you cant buy taste regardless of how much money you steal.. ooops i mean have .......

M.C.S.O. Arrest Search Results by Name

for a much better picture of monique her mug shots now online but you have to search by name

DUMB BI*%H - wtf? telling

DUMB BI*%H - wtf? telling people she is in a medical facility and some of you people back this family - now what do you have to say about POOR LITTLE MONIQUE!!!! OH YEH AND THE FAT ONE?????? LIARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Book her Danno!

SMUG MUG

She looks quite smug. Not off to a good start.

The one below her is older, but hotter

The gal arrested below Monique was born almost one year earlier, but is definitely the hotter of the two!!

About a month

She was actually born about a month after monique, but yeah, way hotter!!!

LOL

You know you have hit an all time low in dating potential when your looking for love on Keysso.net EPIC LOL

how about everyone leaves

how about everyone leaves Monique alone and worry about their own lives !!! no one is perfect and people do make mistakes !! and not one of you guys should be talking about her father !! also randy acevedo has been a damn good superintendent so leave him alone and if you dont like him then pack your bags and leave because we dont want you here !!!

He's just SO DAMN GOOD! Oh darling please!!!!!!!!

He's SO great in fact that he just didn't notice all the corrupt goings on of the Monroe County School Board theives! (Not all of them of course...but the mismanagement is just amazing!)... Yep... I stand corrected....! It's unfortunate that any good he DID do...will now be overshadowed by his blindness in this whole mess! And I hate to tell you...but you are one of only a handful of people who think Monique should be left alone! How nuts are you... why don't you pack YOUR bags! We, (the citizens and taxpayers of Monroe County who want honest governing of our schools!), don't want YOU here! And OH YES... We are worrying about OUR lives dear.... that's why everyone is so bothered and upset. Our lives have been disrupted by this [alleged] thief of a woman...we've all been victimized by Monique and the financial dept. of the School Board and Randy's inability to take any responsibility for his lack of leadership and control of this School Board. He's the one we all elected to be in charge...and when things go wrong..the buck stops with the boss! We need to be upset about this...and we need to voice that to the judges...and to the right people but we all obviously need some sort of outlet to voice our outrage. You may not like it..but people posting their sometimes angry comments is healthy and it may just keep many people from seeking out Monique with those "pitchforks" that everyone keeps talking about!

Monroe County Public Schools officials are all crooks!!!!

How do you steal all these years and that amount of money and no one notices whats going on???? They should all be FIRED and take their State Retirement and Benefits as well... What a bunch of CROOKS!!!!

Oh, good heavens - more of this ingorant crap

Looks like you are in the minority now, Bubba. Your Conch friends are over the Acevedos, both of them. And I guess this means you're going to end up losing YOUR job as well, when Randy and his Cadre are evicted from office.

Maybe let them keep it as a tip

I am for this person's opinion. Maybe I could see a cartoon of a school manager beating up my kid for his lunch money. Oh thats right, cash only and the money is missing... Maybe I could see a cartoon of me as the parent being beaten up for my kids lunch money. No bond, there is apparently more places to test for corruption.

you leave!!!

you leave!!! . . . They [were] paid to do their jobs...They are to do good [things]....Not take from my kinds...This is my children's life...No, I am not perfect and I do make mistakes...But I don't steal for a living...So, yeah...I am perfect compared to them...Maybe you should move out of your rental and buy a house and pay taxes then you would have something to talk about....Take a hike yourself....

Under medical treatment..

Monique would not be available until May 19, because she was under the care "of the Holy Father."

leave them alone

you must be a relative

check out her smile on keysso.net

doesn't look to apologetic to me!

An Open Letter to Monique Acevedo

Dear Monique, Your life does not end now because you are part of the criminal justice system. You are still the same person, you are still entitled to have hopes and dreams, and every day of your life is still a life worth living and a life that can bring great things. You are not branded. You can integrate these circumstances, and you can still move forward. Do not think in terms of abstract notions, such as "freedom," "being locked up," "criminal," etc. Think about the life you have lived: every day, you wake up, you have ups and downs, people to interact with, trials and tribulations, time for socializing and time for reflection, and then you go to sleep and the day begins again. Even if you are tried and sentenced, I can guarantee to you that this core reality of life will not change. This will remain the reality of your life, and it is the reality of life for everyone whether they are on trial, in prison, or at home. Who you are will not change. People are not burned at the stake anymore. And you will not be either. There is a realm – it begins within your heart, mind and spirit, and extends to your physical being – this realm will always be governed and protected by you and you alone, whether you are living in the community or confined to the smallest of cells. But you will not be alone. Whatever happens – up to and including incarceration – there will be a community of people around you who are experiencing exactly what you are experiencing. You are not bad, and they are not bad either. There are opportunities for greatness at every single step of this process. People have done incredible things before, during and after trial, sentencing and even during incarceration. People who have been where you are right now have gone on to write books, found nonprofits and become prominent personalities. People have changed their lives in very profound ways. There are moments in life where we are overcome by a tremendous amount of fear. That fear is not changed or tempered by the fact that we may have had the opportunity to change the reality of our situation. Fear is fear. But I can personally tell you, having spent time with people who are facing extraordinary circumstances (whether it's prosecution, terminal illness, imminent death of a loved one), life really does go on – not simply in the off-hand sense that we use that phrase, but in the sense that surprisingly, amazingly, we can adjust to even the most terrible of circumstances and we find that life is not all that different – every breath in and out, every sunrise and sunset, every task we complete, every interaction we have with those around us – it is simply and wonderfully another day of our life. And every day there is tremendous opportunity to develop the attitude and the strength to integrate those circumstances and truly move forward. Laughter and joy are everywhere. Forgiveness and redemption are everywhere. And people who are admired and respected – in fact, true heroes – are often born of circumstances where there was tremendous doubt, but the person demonstrated integrity and harnessed the opportunity to move forward and generate more good than the harm that their previous actions might have caused. From this day forward, every moment of your life is an opportunity to do just that.

What a wonderful post.

I am truly happy that you posted this, whoever you are. I am sure Monique won't read it because she would have to wade through all the other crap being posted here. I too believe that her life isn't over because of this situation.

Thank You!!!!

I am going to save this response because it's so truthful and insightful, and if the world had more people like you in it, and not like the haters posting comments here in this blog, then it surely would be a better place to live. Thank you for writing this. I will read it again, and again, and again because it offers hope to those in terrible circumstances, regardless of how they got there. Life is truly too precious to throw away. Again, thank you.

Gosh, most of you missed the entire point of my post.

My point is not to question the severity of the charges, or even weigh in on her ultimate innocence or guilt. My point is that no matter what, Monique must move forward. Innocent or guilty, she is at a crossroad. Let's assume she is 100% guilty -- heck, maybe she did even more crimes that we don't even know about yet. My point is -- that cannot be undone now. It is STILL time to move forward, somehow. What is this woman supposed to do now -- bury herself away? Is she not still a person with decisions to make and days to be lived? Why would people react so angrily to a suggestion that this woman move forward and adopt the most positive attitude she can possible adopt? I'm as angry as anyone over the allegations, but that anger does not change the fact that there is still a flame of a human life and spirit that still must go on.

STFU!!!!!!!!!!!

TRUE LEADERS ARE NOT BORN OUT OF CONCH IGNORANCE AND CORRUPTION!

Great letter and finally, someone who doesn't want to stone her.

Thank you for this letter. It took courage to write it in this hateful, judgemental forum. Life is very much worth living and there IS forgiveness and redemption from One who knows our true value even when they world wants to throw us away. This community is full of hate, and in a way, that too is like being incarcerated- trapped inside themselves by disdain, unforgiveness and anger. Sadly, many will stay in that condition b/c one thing is for sure: There will always be people committing crimes (sins), liars, cheaters, adulterers, thiefs. You may not be able to change society, but you can yank the boulder out of our eye before you you point out the spec in your brother's eye. Before you put on the robe and play judge, pause and think how you would be judged. Think you're a pretty good person? Doesn't everyone, until they get caught? Okay, now go ahead hate spewers...do your thing and attack this comment. Thanks for the space to write.

Good Gawd - yet ANOTHER crook justifying illegal behavior?

I can say that most of us are not 'criminals' as you list them: liars, cheaters, adulterers, thieves. Let's not forget murderers and child abusers. I believe that's been the most disturbing part of this entire issue - the fact that there are some people who post here (and many more who don't post) who think that everyone 'makes mistakes' and that it's ok. Stealing is not a mistake. Adultery and cheating and lying are not mistakes. These are conscious deeds. You assume that all are like you. Is it so hard for you to grasp the fact that most people are actually honest, hard-working and would never do any of this stuff? Is it so difficult for you to fathom that everyone is NOT like you and your crooked friends in the least?

In this economic environment, stealing from taxpayers and children over a 5 year period (or longer) is NOT a simple 'mistake'. It's a HUGE CRIME and honest, hard-working citizens have the right to be outraged.

Maybe it's time YOU examined your own personal traits and your own life. Maybe you'll find that YOU are the one 'waiting to get caught' and the rest of us have nothing that makes us worry about being 'caught'.

Thank you for YOUR letter!

You hit the nail on the head with that one! I have no words... you really said it! :) Thank you!

Yah....like Ted Haggard, right?

All that self-examination and rehab and he's still what he is. I'd say this might be coming from Preacher Morgan McPherson except he has no church and of course, he's part of the problem.

Sucker!

What a sucker!

People Like You Fan The Flames

You sound like the Bakers, Tammy et.al. Get a life.

But Return The Money You Stole From us First . . .

Then get some help courtesy of the State, then your priest, and your counselor cause you sure need a lot of help.

What a LIE!! explain State Attorney why she is special????

I want the SA to explain why she is out on her own recognizance, when she was a fugitive? Any teacher that had done this would be in jail as I write this. SPECIAL TREATMENT, SPECIAL TREATMENT continues. Someone better do their job of explaining WHY????

LIE?

She wasn't a fugitive! Do you realize how many outstanding warrants there are in this County alone? Does that make each and every one of them a fugitive? If so, why isn't FDLE tracking them down?? The ROR is standard for people who have never been in trouble before and who do not pose a flight risk. If she was a flight risk she would have flown to Canada, not Miami.

She proved she was a flight

She proved she was a flight risk when she fled so why was she released without having to post bail?

Floggers, I mean Bloggers,

Floggers, I mean Bloggers, may the mercy you show on others be shown on you when your day of reckoning comes....funny how the Keys are filled with so many bitter and nasty folks- not everyone, of course, there are many good people there, as well- but the ones ALWAYS BLOGGING- don't you have anything better to do? I swear...

Floggers you say???

Um I DON'T have any current plans to rob from school children any time soon.... so what reckoning are YOU referring to? and aren't you "blogging" too...? Don't YOU have anything better to do? Go flog on that for a minute!

Perhaps you should understand what you're DOING before you

attempt to comment, Bubba. If you're not up on the proper language and terminology on 'the internets' perhaps you don't need to be using 'them'.

AND people have every right to be bitter when they've been robbed, their children have been robbed, and you see smirking faces of the perps on the front page. All it does is make people MORE angry. It's time that we hold ALL elected and public officials accountable for their misdeeds and thievery from the taxpayers.

uhm..... this is not

uhm..... this is not blogging... get with the world.. these are comments..hahaha.lol... well you must be interested cause you are reading... so you must not have anything better to do..lmao

I wish the Keys wasn't

I wish the Keys wasn't filled with so many nasty floggers...ahem, I mean bloggers. Blood thirsty sharks is all you are. She is a kind lady who made a mistake- think of all the mistakes you've made. You can always tell who the real jerks are- they're the ones screaming loudest when anyone makes mistakes- as if they never have. She used a credit card and likely paid it off. Only in the Keys where there is nothing else to talk about do decent people become the debacle- as all the rotten ones bond together to be jerks.

Bye Bye!

If you feel the keys are such a horrible place full of "Floggers" then please leave and just go up to North Carolina and wait for Monique to get out of jail...!

Umm...maybe we 'scream loud' because we aren't crooks

We 'scream loud' as you so quaintly say, because WE have always been honest. We have never stolen from children and taxpayers. We have made ends meet the honest way, by actually working and not by stealing and engaging in the usual 'Bubba' thievery and intimidation. Since you feel the thieves and crooks are the 'decent people' and the rest of us are 'jerks', then perhaps that tells us a great deal about your character - or lack thereof.

And of course, since you clearly think that systematic, long-term scheming and theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars are simply a 'mistake', then I shudder to think what YOUR crimes are, that you have clearly justified in your head and amongst your close friends, as 'mistakes'. And YOU are running around lose on the street? YOU need to be in jail with the rest of the crooks and thieves.

paid it off?

Likely paid it off with what? the money that she took from students?

she did not likely pay it

she did not likely pay it off.. if she did she would have her canceled checks at the schools door step that next day... that nice lady [allegedly] robbed the school.. she did not make a simple mistake... several transactions, several cover up's, nearly a quarter of a million dollars are GONE! Do you know what the tax payers money is.. It is the home OWNERS and businesses that pay the majority of this tax to our local county. I work hard all year and pay my property tax on time in November every year. Looking back just several years my company has paid tens of thousands of dollars to the school alone in taxes. So us "JERKS" as you put it have the right to vent in comments. So if you don't own your property (RENTERS & VISITORS) and operate a business then shut up because you don't have thousands of dollars in this school. This tax money does not just come from sales tax (if that is what you are thinking) which we pay that also to live anywhere in the U.S.A. Geeeez do you have to have someone stand over you explain to you? Used a credit card.... yes, for herself, pay it back NO.. So if you don't stand up for yourself flogger, blogger you will be stepped on the rest of your life. You will never make it in this world if you let people walk on you. While Randy is shaking your hand Monique is picking your pocket.....

See it to believe it

I hope the KW Citizen got pictures. I want to see her in handcuffs.
