61-year-old man fights off gun-wielding, would-be robbers

Two men tried to rob a 61-year-old man at gunpoint as he was leaving Burger King Monday afternoon, but he foiled the attempt by grabbing the gun, sheriff's reports say.

The Key West man was turning onto Eighth Street when two men reportedly approached his car. When one suspect opened the door and grabbed the driver's gold necklace, the driver grabbed his wrist, reports say. A second suspect jumped in the car through the back-passenger door, put a handgun to the man's head and said, "I want it now, Papi!"

When the driver grabbed the gun, the suspect pulled away, leaving deep cuts in the driver's hand, reports say. The suspect then allegedly hit him in the nose and forehead with the butt of the gun.

The driver fought off his attackers and kept his necklace, reports say. He even chased the suspects toward Ninth Avenue, but reportedly lost sight of them.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies found the driver at Fifth Avenue and Cross Street, where he was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center while officers searched for the two suspects, reports say.

The driver described them as black men in their 20s, each with a thin build, wearing denim shorts and white tank tops, reports say.

Deputies ask anyone with information about the case to contact Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys at 800-346-8477 or at http://www.tipsubmit.com. Tips are eligible for cash rewards.

Gun Control

Once again, if 'Papi' was armed there would be two fewer perps and a happy ending to this story .... how many more people will these perps harm before they are caught by dumb luck?

Remember when you need help in seconds the police are just minutes away

The police write tickets, talk to victims and write reports .... they'll never be there in time to protect you from someone who wants to do you harm

If you can't take care of yourself and your family it's just going to get worse out there

You couldn't have stated

You couldn't have stated that any better. The police will never get there in time to protect you and your family.

An armed society is a polite society. ........

...... Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life. --Robert A. Heinlein

Vermont and Alaska are as it should be: no need to ask permission, pay fees, carrying paperwork, etc. - the way the 2nd Amendment was meant to be.

Don't too often hear about punks pistol whipping the elderly at Burger King in those states

Somehow I don't think it's the weather

An armed

I believe they actually use guns in those states on four legged critters

“When no one knows who is armed, then everyone is”.

It could be that many liberals realize thst they are personally emotionally unstable, and don’t trust themselves to own guns.

Even after years of evidence to the contrary libs and 'progressives' are still predicting a bloodbath.

So this was all in broad day

So this was all in broad day light ?? wow... way to go MC sheriff dept!

Gun Control?

Florida has a concealed weapon permit law. Why would you cite gun control laws here? This isn't the Yankee north where there are no Second Amendment rights.

but dont you know

guns kill people and are unsafe in the hands of law abiding, right to own a gun people. lemme at em!
