Two audible explosions, a plume of smoke and two minutes on a Wednesday morning were all it took to successfully sink the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg as an artificial reef for divers, snorkelers and anglers.
The former military ship reported for its final tour of duty on the ocean floor off Key West around 10:24 a.m., with hundreds of local boats gathered in the surrounding waters to watch history being made.
After a 10-minute delay for a sea turtle to clear the area, a nearby tugboat set off a red flare that marked the five-minute countdown, followed by a second red flare that was the sign for T-minus one minute.
"It looked to be perfect," an overwhelmed Capt. Joe Weatherby said minutes after the stern slipped quickly beneath the water, leaving a 522-foot-long churning wake of water on the surface. "We had the world's best blasting crew on this, and it was a wonder to behold. Fish will be living on that wreck this afternoon."
Within 45 minutes, divers had verified the ship was sitting upright on the bottom and settling perfectly. One of two giant satellite dishes on top of the ship apparently relocated a bit, but poses no risk, said City Commissioner Bill Verge, who has been spearheading the project for the city of Key West for the past year.
"Perseverance pays," said Capt. Sheri Lohr, who remembers standing on a dock next to Weatherby 12 years ago and hearing him say Key West needed a "really good wreck" to boost the dive business and take pressure off the natural coral reef.
A founding board member of Artificial Reefs of the Keys, the nonprofit group that launched the project, Lohr stood quietly aboard the Pacific Fury Wednesday, holding her breath for the two minutes it took for the ship to sink straight down. The catamaran, captained by Weatherby more than five years ago, carried about 40 media representatives recording the sinking.
While a Key West flotilla of boats was charging toward a common destination -- the hulking silhouette barely visible through the horizon haze -- by 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, other Key West residents and visitors were gathering at various locations by 10 a.m. Some were riveted to computer monitors, watching live streaming video of the sinking. Many watched from the waterfront, including Smathers Beach, White Street Pier and the East Martello Tower. A smattering viewed the spectacle from the top of the Crowne Plaza Key West La Concha hotel.
Weatherby returned to the catamaran and climbed easily aboard for interviews and the beginning of what will be a week of celebrations, both underwater and above.

That said, please note, however, that this project was pretty much run by reefmakers.com http://www.reefmakers.com/pages/About.html. Most importantly, note that this is a FOR PROFIT company and note the pictures on the headers. While he pushed this through, it's important for all the taxpayers of Monroe County to remember when they write those tax checks every year, that Weatherby made money on this deal for many, many years while the dive shops were starving.
While we always supported adding a wreck, the cost and timing got out of hand and clearly he has personally profited by the loss of time and the expenditure of funds. Since it is taxpayer funded, when will we all get to see the entire accounting of the venture for the past 12 years and where will it be available?
While many have publicized this as strictly a 'labor of love', they've also profited while the project ran 7 or 8 yrs or more over deadline and 8 or 10 times over budget. It's really quite easy to go to this link: http://www.reefmakers.com/pages/About.html and look at the faces and email addresses on this FOR PROFIT corporation's website. While I agree they technically did a good job on the sinking, it is important to note that there are many who profited from the over-budget and over-deadline issues with this sinking.
I have no problem with individuals making a profit but I do have a problem with all the altruism that has been assigned to these parties when indeed, they were doing quite well for themselves. Let's just have the truth.
And what a snotty comment about the smoke!!! Of course, we had no problem with the smoke since we were on the OTHER side of the wreck in deep water. You were very, very rude to all the rest of the boaters. However, based on the folks onboard, it's not surprising to see more entitlement attitude.
. . .Twenty years to recover the $10+ million cost
Only Obama and could do worse
Forever the Vandenboondoggle
At least you do admit that profits were made on the backs of the taxpayers here. Why should we cease to comment about waste because 'the sinking is completed'? Why should we just roll over and allow this careless use of tax dollars? If we continue to roll over and allow public monies to be used to encourage waste and to line private pockets, more outrageous expenditures for private profit will continue. Now is not the time for complacency. We have shortfalls at every level of government and it's time to tighten the screws on all stupid spending.
