Vandenberg sinks as planned

Two audible explosions, a plume of smoke and two minutes on a Wednesday morning were all it took to successfully sink the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg as an artificial reef for divers, snorkelers and anglers.

The former military ship reported for its final tour of duty on the ocean floor off Key West around 10:24 a.m., with hundreds of local boats gathered in the surrounding waters to watch history being made.

After a 10-minute delay for a sea turtle to clear the area, a nearby tugboat set off a red flare that marked the five-minute countdown, followed by a second red flare that was the sign for T-minus one minute.

"It looked to be perfect," an overwhelmed Capt. Joe Weatherby said minutes after the stern slipped quickly beneath the water, leaving a 522-foot-long churning wake of water on the surface. "We had the world's best blasting crew on this, and it was a wonder to behold. Fish will be living on that wreck this afternoon."

Within 45 minutes, divers had verified the ship was sitting upright on the bottom and settling perfectly. One of two giant satellite dishes on top of the ship apparently relocated a bit, but poses no risk, said City Commissioner Bill Verge, who has been spearheading the project for the city of Key West for the past year.

"Perseverance pays," said Capt. Sheri Lohr, who remembers standing on a dock next to Weatherby 12 years ago and hearing him say Key West needed a "really good wreck" to boost the dive business and take pressure off the natural coral reef.

A founding board member of Artificial Reefs of the Keys, the nonprofit group that launched the project, Lohr stood quietly aboard the Pacific Fury Wednesday, holding her breath for the two minutes it took for the ship to sink straight down. The catamaran, captained by Weatherby more than five years ago, carried about 40 media representatives recording the sinking.

While a Key West flotilla of boats was charging toward a common destination -- the hulking silhouette barely visible through the horizon haze -- by 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, other Key West residents and visitors were gathering at various locations by 10 a.m. Some were riveted to computer monitors, watching live streaming video of the sinking. Many watched from the waterfront, including Smathers Beach, White Street Pier and the East Martello Tower. A smattering viewed the spectacle from the top of the Crowne Plaza Key West La Concha hotel.

Weatherby returned to the catamaran and climbed easily aboard for interviews and the beginning of what will be a week of celebrations, both underwater and above.

Vanderberg

Kudos to all that made this a reality.

very excited

I just became a scuba diver and cant wait to go to this new wreck. Im very glad that there is even more to enjoy here. Those that are complaining obviously dont enjoy diving, so they should try to bring down something they enjoy, like laser tag or a public bowling ally.

all people do

is drink and complain

Thanks to Weatherby Verge and everyone else!!

I am very excited about diving this wreck next month. I have been a scuba instructor in Key West for Twenty years and the buzz about this sinking is a GLOBAL EVENT!! Please excuse the narrow minded comments from the naysayers, they have nothing to contribute but whining & complaints....

Cant wait to dive it.

Hey, it made the...

evening news in California. Cap'n. Ran, you and the other Sanctuary Buoy Team members get those buoys attached yet? OK, we'll come out, let's go...

This is a positive event and

This is a positive event and tourist attraction for everyone for years to come. The money that came from government agencies would have gone to some other project that isn't nearly as exciting or beneficial to our local economy. I sure hope that you folks with the negative comments don't go fishing or diving on our new wreck, and I sincerely hope that you earn no benefit from the additional $ brought into our town from it. it's down, it's great! Go rain on someone else's parade.

I would rather rain on your

I would rather rain on your wasteful parade

Good job, Reefmakers

It went nicely and was a spectacular sinking.

That said, please note, however, that this project was pretty much run by reefmakers.com http://www.reefmakers.com/pages/About.html. Most importantly, note that this is a FOR PROFIT company and note the pictures on the headers. While he pushed this through, it's important for all the taxpayers of Monroe County to remember when they write those tax checks every year, that Weatherby made money on this deal for many, many years while the dive shops were starving.

While we always supported adding a wreck, the cost and timing got out of hand and clearly he has personally profited by the loss of time and the expenditure of funds. Since it is taxpayer funded, when will we all get to see the entire accounting of the venture for the past 12 years and where will it be available?

Mr. City Manager, please get the financials in hand

because we'll be requesting those. The City owns the wreck. It's funded with taxpayer dollars so I'm sure the audited financial reports for the last 11 yrs or so are already in the hands of the City. If not, perhaps the City should be getting them right now. It will be interesting to see how much Reefmakers made on the deal over 12 years. I recommend all fiscally responsible citizens ask to see these and other City financial records - often!

I have to admit, it was impressive!

While I've been unhappy with the waste and negligence involved in this project, the actual sinking was impressive and I do hope it truly produces what they've said it would - tourist dollars. Guess I'll try to dive it this week! Why not? I helped pay for it!

Waste & Negligence?

I surely hope you are not (unjustly) insinuating waste & negligence by ARK or Reefmakers...keep it to the facts, please. Several people have dedicated their lives to this project and do not deserve false accusations.

Well, since the taxpayers paid for this and it's in the City's

name now, I am assuming that the entire audited financials on the entire operation will soon be made public so that we can see what the exact costs were and who made the money. Mr. Verge, you'll see that we all have access to that, right?

While many have publicized this as strictly a 'labor of love', they've also profited while the project ran 7 or 8 yrs or more over deadline and 8 or 10 times over budget. It's really quite easy to go to this link: http://www.reefmakers.com/pages/About.html and look at the faces and email addresses on this FOR PROFIT corporation's website. While I agree they technically did a good job on the sinking, it is important to note that there are many who profited from the over-budget and over-deadline issues with this sinking.

I have no problem with individuals making a profit but I do have a problem with all the altruism that has been assigned to these parties when indeed, they were doing quite well for themselves. Let's just have the truth.

The "Vanwasteberg" sinks,

The "Vanwasteberg" sinks, What a complete waste of money.

Who paid for the ferry?

I wonder who paid for the ferry that took our elected officials and their guests to watch the sinking. I understand there was all the food and booze you could drink. I am hoping it was not us taxpayers.

Why wonder! Just ask!

If it's a public expense, and it's public money, the city is required to provide the info. Write the City clerk for public information request: csmith@keywestcity.com.

And did you hear all the many many calls on the radio

for them to move that ferry? It was blocking the view of all the little boats who'd been waiting for hours, to see the sinking. I think it's absolutely abhorant that our elected officials feel that kind of arrogance that they'd do that. Just what you'd expect of McPherson, DiGennaro and company.

Ferry boat

Ferry boat had detinator on board and special clearance to get as close as possible. Sorry if we blockedyour view of the smoke.

Is that right? Didn't hear you tell that to the officials

when you were told to back off. And you had a detinator, not the demolition experts on the wreck boats? Oh, give me a break. I'll believe that when I believe that Acevedo didn't know about an extra half-million in income in his household.

And what a snotty comment about the smoke!!! Of course, we had no problem with the smoke since we were on the OTHER side of the wreck in deep water. You were very, very rude to all the rest of the boaters. However, based on the folks onboard, it's not surprising to see more entitlement attitude.

. . .

return

Now we begin the real countdown...it will take at least ten years for the wreck to generate $8,000,000 and another twenty for the taxes to be recovered by the City of Key West. Our coral reef is dead and now the Vandenberg is the official symbol of the neglect and misdirection of Billy Causey.

Ten Years to Generate $8 Million

Twenty years to recover the $10+ million cost

Only Obama and could do worse

Forever the Vandenboondoggle

Tax payers reef

But in ten years the underwater sea life will be happy we did.

Congrats

A big congrats to my old friend Joe Weatherby!!!!!

objective by stander

Yes i agree the cost came to a lot more then origanlly projected and yes profits were made. the sinking is completed. so lets stop all the complaining and enjoy what the Vandenberg stands for (then and now ) Here are my personal thoughts weather anyone likes them or not. First I think it is a great memorial for all who served on her and she will never be sold out for just scrap. second it will in a short time start to gather corals and other sea life, it will bring money to our comunity not just dive shops but also gas stations, restaurants, lodging, bars, shopping of all types, fishing charters, all that means money to the locals and businesses and taxes. A lot of time and money had been given to this project freely and willingly, not just taxpayers money,my hats off to all who made it happen, I also believe it will give relief to our natural reef that could use a much needed rest from snorkeling and diveing, but this is key west and like opinions eveyone has one, just like As-h---s. it just seems to me that lately Key West has had more of both.

I'd like to see people post here about the landslide of business

this past week since the Vandenberg went down. Guest Houses? Hotels? Gas stations? Bars? Shops? Weigh in please. The City of Key West and Monroe County paid for this boondoggle so we'd like to see some figures and hear some positive news. Is it only locals diving it now?

At least you do admit that profits were made on the backs of the taxpayers here. Why should we cease to comment about waste because 'the sinking is completed'? Why should we just roll over and allow this careless use of tax dollars? If we continue to roll over and allow public monies to be used to encourage waste and to line private pockets, more outrageous expenditures for private profit will continue. Now is not the time for complacency. We have shortfalls at every level of government and it's time to tighten the screws on all stupid spending.

A local dive shop commented that they'd seen no increased

interest in diving in Key West thus far. So much for glowing projections.
