The Monroe County School Board today will review personnel decisions made by suspended Superintendent Randy Acevedo.
The board, which had not yet approved Acevedo's staff changes, is expected to discuss the personnel issues in executive session before opening the meeting to the public when it convenes at 10 a.m. today.
"The district administrative decisions made by [Acevedo] are no longer valid," School Board member John Dick said. "We didn't vote to approve the list; it's null and void."
Much of the afternoon likely will be spent hashing out the future of two high school principals and other employees.
Acevedo previously had informed Key West High School Principal John Welsh and Coral Shores High School Principal Ron Martin that their contracts would not be renewed next year. Acevedo also has indicated he planned to transfer Frannie Herrin from her position as principal of Gerald Adams Elementary School to head of Title 1 Services, and Key West High Assistant Principal Christina McPherson to fill Welsh's position.
Board Chairman Andy Griffiths was at district headquarters Monday developing charts that listed employees whose jobs could be cut.
"I'm trying to get us a budget," Griffiths said. "What I have told the acting superintendent [Mike Henriquez] is that he needs to put together all the organizational charts from all departments and schools, and list everyone who is not assigned to students [so we can] reduce non-instructional positions."
The board agreed two weeks ago to let Acevedo cut 23 teaching positions.
"I voted against the teachers choices," Dick said. "That's 23 teachers and we had yet to hear of any reduction in the district office."
For Griffiths, it's about hitting a June 30 deadline to determine how many non-instructional positions can be cut to ensure more money is available for teachers and the classroom.
"We're trying to right-size the district now so we can have a number in the budget," he said.
Gov. Charlie Crist on Thursday suspended Randy Acevedo after a grand jury on Wednesday indicted him on a third-degree felony charge of official misconduct. He is accused of helping cover up his wife's alleged theft of school funds.
