Inmate found in sick-bay tub

A 26-year-old inmate was found unconscious and submerged in a sick-bay bathtub at the Stock Island jail Thursday morning, ac-cording to the Sheriff's Office.

Clayton Ayers Link, of 140 Pacific Ave. in Tavernier, was in critical condition and apparently unconscious when he was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center, then airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Miami, spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Officials on Thursday were trying to determine what happened, but said foul play was not suspected, Herrin said.

"He was alone in the bathroom, and the sick bay area is like being in lockdown," Herrin said. "Inmates can't roam around. They're only allowed out individually."

After hearing the water running for an unusually long time, a corrections officer checked on Link, who had requested a bath after reportedly vomiting around 8:30 a.m., Herrin said.

The corrections officer pulled Link from the tub and immediately began CPR, and jail medical personnel were called to the scene, Herrin said.

Link underwent a routine jail medical exam before he was booked Wednesday night, Herrin said. It was unclear whether he was sick then and admitted to the sick bay, or was put with the other prisoners and got get sick later, Herrin said.

Deputies arrested Link and his father on marijuana possession charges after a 7 p.m. Wednesday raid at their home, reports say. Slightly more than a pound of marijuana, 2 pounds of hash oil, Oxycontin, Alprazolam, pipes, a scale and $400 allegedly was found in Link's bedroom. A small amount of pot was found in his father's bedroom, reports say.

Link was being held on $5,000 bond. His father was released from the Plantation Key jail Thursday morning after posting a $328 bond.

The "facts"

First of all his name is: Clayton AYRES Link. Clayton had a known seizure disorder prior to the arrest. Clayton had a seizure on the way to Key West (that's why he had vomit and asked to clean up). Monroe County Sheriff's Department allowed Clayton to take a bath unsupervised. Clayton was found submerged in the tub. CPR was initiated and Clayton was airlifted to Baptist. Clayton is now on life support. Monroe County Sheriff's Department was grossly negligent. Please support the family during this very tragic time. I CAN NOT imagine losing my child to gross negligence brought on by the people that are here to "protect" me. Clayton's Aunt

RIP

I am sorry for your loss , it is all so un fourtanate.. Clayton was a great person & would do anything for anyone.. He didnt deserve this at all.. My prayers are with you & your family at a time like this GOD BLESS YOU ALL & I hope that you all do justice to MCSO & give them what they deserve they should have been watching him.. This is there FAULT.. Love Meagan & Hal Pickering... Some of Claytons closest friends.. <3

MCSO employees are all idiots. Since they're part of MCSO,

the jail people are the dumbest of the dumb. I know a few and it's horrifying to think that our tax monies employee these people. Not only are they dumb, they're arrogant and have a lot of power 'issues' which is also frightening.

Why in the world would

anyone leave someone unsupervised in sick bay. My God! Running a bath? The man was brought in on drug charges and it should be assumed he had something in his system. What a pathetic system we have.

Wow...moved to the Key West

Wow...moved to the Key West jail because he had known seizures. Then left alone in a bath tub? I hope is Dad gets rich off those idiots. All for a nonviolent crime.

What seizures?

It doesn't say in the online edition that he had "known seizures", just that he vomited.

Maybe I know someone at the

Maybe I know someone at the jail. Just because it wasn't in the Citizen doesn't mean it did not happen. Open your mind and your eyes to what's going on around you.

Does this website screen responses????

I wrote a response to this article and I was wondering if "The Citizen" censor responses? Can you tell me?

american tragedy

another tragedy caused by the senseless facist drug war. end the war on drugs. jf

irresponsible

If I arrested someone with these items and he threw up my first thought would be: he probably ate some of the xanax and or oxycontin to avoid being caught with it or to be high in jail, and Im not even a cop. If he appeared woozy and under the influence I would have the nurse check his pupils and take his vitals and make sure he was stable.. Not leave him alone for a long time in a bathtub! Poor dumb kid.

accidents happen

falling down stairs, slipping on the soap, dont just come to some crazy conclusion.

not crazy conclusion!! just fact!!

The sheriff dep.. is totaly at fault here. The officers were told he had seizuers and was on special medication to keep from having those seizures. Not only that, he was not just in sick bay as the sheriff dep. would like you to believe. HE WAS ON SUCIDE WATCH...,which means constant supervision esspecially in a bath tub with water. You should know the facts of this tragic case before you say something so stupid & unintelligent
