Roadwork on Stretch causes weekend traffic snarl

Florida Keys officials are calling for rapid action from the state Department of Transportation after repair work on the northbound lane of the 18-Mile Stretch led to a massive delay for motorists leaving the Keys this weekend.

Traffic was backed up all afternoon and into the night Sunday, reaching as far south as Mile Marker 99 by late afternoon. Once motorists crept their way to Mile Marker 106.5, they were diverted onto County Road 905 and then Card Sound Road.

Motorists like Trey Vetromile, who left Tavernier for Lake Worth at 5:30 p.m. Sunday after a Father's Day visit with his dad, said the drive from central Key Largo to Florida City took three hours.

Shoddy work to begin with.

Shoddy work to begin with. You get what you pay for when all that's important is the lowest bid.

Maybe it was the Rats leaving the Ship

Maybe it was from all the school district personnel trying to get away from the States Attorney and the Forensic Auditors.

traffic jam

how's about a article on WHY ?????

You don't know?

Another idiot contractor - this one for FDOT. They're paying for the repair, but we're paying in hours waiting.

Who's paying

The contractor should also be paying for all of the law enforcement overtime and lost toll revenue!

they shoulda hired Conch contractors... LOL

Yep, that's it... if they'd hired Bubba and Company to do the 18-mile stretch, that wouldn't have happened... NOT

Well, with Toppino, we might as well put velcro under the road

because they no sooner surface it than they tear it up and surface it again. More great Monroe County planning.
