FDLE office moves to Marathon to save money

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is expected to shutter its Key West office today, as state budget cuts are forcing agents to share space at the Florida Highway Patrol office in Marathon.

None of the six employees at the Flagler Avenue office will lose their jobs, said Heather Smith, an agency spokeswoman in Tallahassee.

The move will not affect law enforcement in Monroe County, as agents will work throughout the Florida Keys as before, said Kathy Smith, the local special agent supervisor.

FDLE is the state's primary law enforcement agency that investigates major crimes, including incidents involving other law enforcement agencies.

The Habana Plaza office, at 3124 Flagler Ave., cost the state $156,421 annually in rent, Heather Smith said. FDLE will not pay rent at its new office at 3380 Overseas Highway, she said.

The Key West office is not alone, as 14 of the 15 FDLE field offices across the state will move into shared offices with other law enforcement by July 1, she said.

Only the Daytona Beach office, which houses the crime lab, will remain open, she said. The seven regional operations centers in major cities such as Miami will not be affected by the closures, she said.

The move is expected to save about $1.6 million annually.

"It's not something that's the ideal course for us," Smith said. "But the closure only cuts office overhead and not personnel."

Legislators in fall asked the agency to trim 15 percent of its annual budget.

FDLE agents now can be reached at 305-289-2300 or 800-226-3023.

RENT ?

The FDLE was paying $ 13,000.00 a month to rent an office in Habana Plaza? $ 13,000 a month? Habana Plaza ?

That taxpayer is starting to get real sore back there.

REAL sore.

PLEASE,

tell us this was a typo. That couldn't possibly be. Not in Habana plaza. How many sq. ft. did they have? The crookedness in this town just makes me weep. The taxpayer is being gang raped 365 days a year.

So,

Can that possibly be what Fla. taxpayers were actually paying the landlord for that hole in the wall,or what it "cost"after all "expenses" were "figured" in???? God, it's just mind numbing.

This building has been

This building has been extensively renovated. Before you make such comments, you really need to go over to Habana Plaza and see for yourself.

I have been over there.

Because I was stunned at that figure. It has been cleaned up a lot.Are you saying that office is worth $13,000 a month today?Who do you suppose will rent it for that?(Other than the City or County).Please.

RETAIL space on Duval runs $13,000 a month. Office space on

Flagler? Well, let's just say I can't think of a business who'd pay that for an office - and especially not there. Once again, the taxpayers were taken for a ride.

What a waste! There is no way to justify that outrageous rent.

We pay $2,000 a month for 1,400 square feet with parking in New Town. Anyway you look at it, Habana Plaza was a rip off. Why do you think that so many of the old tenants moved out?

On Duval, you don't have ANY

On Duval, you don't have ANY parking. At Habana Plaza the FDLE had a very large building and great parking. Parking alone in this town is a big plus.

So you're saying that FDLE

was dealing with so much crime in Key West, that PARKING was an issue??? Just how many people a day do you think they dealt with? Man, I must miss a lot of crime. Now that you bring it up,though, they DO primarily deal with corruption in other agencies.... (With salaries and "expenses",they were spending at least several hundred thousand annually....Just what have they been doing there? Just curious. I'm sure it was very important. And necessary.Because, as you know, Florida is in a budget crisis of epic proportions....

This was a post by the property owners, I'm sure.

Disregard it. Parking my *** !

How many layers do we need?

Sheriffs, City, Highway and FDLE ??

And we can't keep the bums off the beach, a bicycle in the front yard or the bubba's hands out of the cookie jar

It's a pension and health and welfare mill that sometimes issues speeding tickets

Obviously what we have isn't working since the

person in charge of the FDLE office here is married to a KW cop. So....say you have news of corruption in law enforcement in Monroe County. And say you phone the FDLE office in Tallahassee with your info. And what do they do? They refer you to Ms. Smith. THAT'S what I call fox in the henhouse.

I Completely Agree

..try to lodge a complaint about improper officer misconduct, behavior, or influence and it gets buried. Doesn't even see the light of day. I'm starting to think the only way to deal with one of these corrupt deputies is to drop him on the spot with their pants down.

It's the Bubba System

and bubbas eat alone

like i said before yankees,

like i said before yankees, conchs run this town!!!!

like i said before yankees,
