Public pays for Acevedo's defense
Circuit court clerk declares her indigent, grants her public defender

Former Adult Education Coordinator Monique Acevedo has been granted a public defender to represent her against criminal charges of stealing more than $180,000 in school money.

The Public Defender's Office has declared her indigent, according to a financial affidavit in which she declared she has no income, $237,000 in debt, $100 in one bank account and $2,500 in savings.

I am not partial either way with the Acevedo story but this story has gotten so far from the facts it is pitiful. What happened to being tried in court? In KW you are tried by the Citizen and by the public. I am certain we we do not have all the FACTS so how can we sit in judgement? You people that ridicule Acevedo and condemn the Spottswood for helping a man in need should be ashamed. This man has three children to feed. What would you suggest he do claim unemployment?? As far as his dad goes he did what most goodparents would do defend your child. Honestly, he wasn't so far off the mark on his comment to certain board members!! for helping a person in need you be ashamed. Regardless of the "scandal" this family needs to eat so what do you propose Mr Acevedo do? Would you prefer he claim unemployment?. I think we should leave these people alone and let the court system do their job. And as far as Mr. Acevedo Sr. he is a decent man and did what any parent does, defend your child. Anyone who is a parent understands how he feels. And he really wasn't far off the mark with his comments.

going to turn into an absolutely brutal expose of the difference between real net worth,and a dishonest fabricated lifestyle that the authorities,in thier ineptness,just haven't caught up with yet.Been watching it all my life,here.Apparently, folks living down at the saltponds,since they are debtfree,have net worths far exceeding the Acevedos.There are people (that I know) riding bicycles in KW, whose net worth far exceeds many of the "rich" people you see parading around the city chomping cigars in thier gas hogs.One of these days....these folks may be required to prove legal(as in reported to the IRS) income that would possibly allow them to live thier "lifestyles".That is what RICO did in the 80's here.It has brought down people all over this country that thought they were so clever.It brought down childhood friends of mine a decade after they had finished committing crimes.(Pot smuggling).Because they were too stupid(or egotistical) to do the math.And the government wasn't.Example:If you report $80,000 income for your contracting business,you can't have $2mil waterfront home,yacht,and plane!RICO makes you show where the money came from.Drugs,theft, embezzlement,bribery,kickbacks,even extremely creative laundering of public funding,etc.are not 'acceptable' sources...(But that ol' IRS still requires you report them!!THAT'S where they get ya.)What percentage of the people that look "rich" in this town do you guess could stand that kind of scrutiny? I know some that wouldn't have a prayer.

This is incredible. If one of their children was applying for finacial aid at a college they would count both incomes. My parents both got remarried when I was 19 and I couldnt get finacial aid because they counted my step parents income. She claims she only made what 70,000 but what about randy's 140,000 and what ever the spotswood are paying him. I guess they will all walk and the tax payers have to pay for it. Plus who would hire someone who is up for felony charges of obstuction of justice as a security guard? It is sickeneing. I know it is good to stick by your friends but were is the ethics and moral compass down here? It is not something you just do on sundays people. The money was stolen from our children and those who cant fully defend themselves. We owe them a better place to live. What about the social contract our founding fathers believed in? What about doing things for the better good not just for your self? What about just plain being a good honest person?

Now wouldn't that be a hoot....

If the State Attorney were to contract out security over the summer to guard the storage room with the evidence gathered from Monique. And imagine if the low bid happened to be from the group that supposedly hired Randy. Now image if he was the one assigned to keep an eye on everything. And here is a key so you can periodically check to be sure everything is okay. Deja vu all over again!

Gee Spotwoods to the rescue again hire a x prisoner corrupt cop now Randy, Cassamayor can sit and tell Randy what his wife can expect on the inside of prison even though State in worse than Federal prison and he was doing good from the inside of prison. Spotwoods can put Randy on the missing safe from Floral Ave. he might do a better job than the Det. from the Sheriff office.

Nathan Eden is dead on the script.He's very smart. This is all about timing the trials now.And they will get thier way.Like I told you months ago,Ward and Wilson are in way over thier heads.If they were gasping for air before,Ms. Vogel just put her heel on thier heads and shoved.They better accept any plea,even probation,without any restitution....so very sad.

Can a newspaper be any more biased? What happened to integrity in reporting? This may as well be The Inquirer. I know the public wants blood, but the filtered news should be more responsible than to fan the fire just because they think they can. The facts are bad enough, there is no need in editorializing the alleged "news" stories. I'm not a Randy supporter but this bias is making me lean that way.

I have a copy of the last Audit Report from the State of Florida. It could be that all this possible fraud was clearly outlined in the Audit Report and nothing was done then. Did the MCSB members not read the Audit report, did the Superindent read it and push it under the rug. Someone had to report this. Why not the Keys News. The Audit report is there for the public. Was it not published in the local paper? Should have been. I live several hundred miles from Key West. I just want the Monroe county taxpayer and students and parents to get justice. And the state of Florida and Marc House need some payback for taxes not paid and their money spent of someone's personal wants. Innocent until proven guilty is the way it is suppose to be. But it is very hard to overlook anything being innocent in this sorid affair.

Oh, no, the only SB member the voters have on our side is softening. They don't deserve our pity, they deserve our scorn. These people are an embarassment. Making over $200K a year and have $2,600 in the bank!! AND I'm getting more furious by the day with our state attorney. Too much time has lapsed. I hope he is doing an extensive paper trail, subpoening their checking accts., personal credit cards, mortgage refi. They refinanced their home several times over the last 5 years each time the took out a bigger mortgage. Are these the actions of a responsible mother and father? Mortgaging their home to the hilt? Why? Because they were over extending themselves. When they took out a mortgage they had to fill out a detailed mortgage application showing the monies in the bank. Did they lie on those? Who would loan someone $500K with $2600 in the bank? Randy had to sign those papers. And he says he knows nothing about what Monique was doing with their personal finances.

The bank would never loan a dime on those amounts.Unless....I can't even go there..There is massive, rampant,and very inept lying going on here. That's what happens when your in such a panic to escape,that you can't even coordinate your lies.All that equity stripping out of thier house,(with the bank's complicity,since personal financial statements exist),must ALSO be accounted for.They can show that debt to the court only because they RECEIVED those funds.It's humanly impossible for them to throw that much money away,even with NO theft.This is not about compulsive shopping disorders.They are clever people. And they are surrounded by even cleverer.That wealth EXISTS on this planet.I know (real) millionaires that live very well on a fraction of that.Did I say they are LYING? And have through the 60's,70's,80's,90's,and now.They kept stripping all this equity out of a home in what even the dumbest of us knew was a massive RE bubble,headed for collapse.With the bank's complete blessing.In an era when banks and thier clients were both too filled with greed to tell who was defrauding who...(FSB never would have touched this).We used to call it outcrooking each other.It's what my KW born grandfather used to call "end of the world financing".Meaning,we'll all have to die to ever get out of this debt....This looks like a plan that didn't quite work....A hateful thing to do to a family you love?Something just doesn't make sense,here,right? You got that right. I would like to know if anyone actually checked the validity of that one page statement Monique wrote in order to get free representation with taxpayer dollars. Has anyone checked her bank account statements for the past few years? Has anyone checked the contents of safety deposit boxes? Has anyone asked Monique's parents if they received large cash gifts from their daughter from 2005 on? How can a Key West homeowner be declared indigent? And if the courts find out she lied, is she obligated to make restitution for the cost of the public defender as well?

and now that Spottswood hired Randy for a security job, I guess whatever he makes will not be counted as family income? Maybe he has his own checking account and the money has been transferred there or is in N.C. at her dads. The debt she listed for the house is $237,000 which is half of what they both owe together. Now that Randy is working again and he is still her husband, can the court take his pay??

I keep reading that Spottswoods have hired randy for a security job. Was this through a local security company, or a direct hire? It would be useful for the community to know what "security" company is crazy enough to hire someone like Randy. I'd sure like to know. Or is he a night watchman at a Spottswood property? That sounds ridiculous, too. Just buying him fat-boy uniforms would make that a losing proposition.

Could be he's realizing that many of the"baseless" comments on here the last few months were closer to the truth than he hoped.
