Cheerleaders rally at Publix for camp funds

The Marathon High School varsity cheerleaders are rolling up their sleeves to ensure their trip to cheer camp.

The 11 high school students that compose the MHS varsity squad have to provide $250 each to go to camp at Miami International University, a daunting prospect in a recession. Cheerleading coach Lisa Kendrick, Coach K to her squad, has organized a fundraiser to help the girls who cannot afford it. The cheerleaders will be bagging groceries at Publix on Friday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The cheerleaders hope to raise more than $1,000 through bagging donations from generous customers. "Bagging on July 3 may not be enough," Kendrick told the Free Press. "It's a possibility that we will bag on [July 5] as well." The cheerleaders have a long way to go with raising money, but the girls have shown genuine enthusiasm in achieving their goal. "I really hope we raise the money," cheerleader Sophie Coldren told the Free Press. "Not going to camp would be terrible."

The cheer squad practices twice a week at the MHS gymnasium from 4 to 6 p.m., and Kendrick encourages her squad to "Work harder than the football players." According to Coach Kendrick, the cheerleaders have to both learn and perform somewhere between 20 and 40 cheers by the end of the summer. Kendrick told the Free Press she hopes to remake and improve the cheer squad for the 2009-2010 school year, and that will require commitment from her squad.

With the prospect of paying for a much-desired camp before them, many on the squad have shown a willingness to go the extra mile. "I have a lot of faith in my community. I know they will help us achieve our objective," Alaina Davis said.

Do they know...

Does the squad know they can hire one or two college cheerleaders for A LOT less for an on-site camp? You can still get the camaraderie experience by using the school for a 2-3 night lock-in (sleep-over) and view CDs of national cheer competitions and safety issues of the sport as part of the evening agenda.

Work harder than the football players???

On only two days a week? 4 hours a week? That is working harder than the football team? In my book, as a former high school and university cheerleader, and coach, that's not enough time to warm-up, let alone become effective and skilled. I'd be willing to bet at least one hour per practice is spend bickering and/or goofing off.

Cheerleaders troll for funds

This is disgusting! Our educational system has finally hit bottom. When I was a cheerleader in the 80s, the only funds I had to raise was for my uniform. It is sad that parents are allowing the school district to exploit their daughters.

bagging groceries for donations

I'm a former teacher and club sponsor and I would never let my students do this. In fact, when I went to Publix and saw this occurring (bagging for donations), I made it a point to tell the students seeking donations why I was not donating (Josh, are you reading this?) and what they should be doing. Giving plaques to local businesses in return for a donation is also not appropriate. Come on, MHS students, get with it!

why now...

i suppose they didnt know till now they had to pay.where is the car wash, bake sale etc.why dosent the art dept.just give them cardboard and a marker!they can stand on the corner and hold a begging sign like the bums!how about a show of support from the rest of the students?oh yeah, cant spare a buck, they need it to get a bag of weed!

Publix bags groceries for

Publix bags groceries for free. If each cheerleader expects to make $250.00 in 5 hours bagging groceries, they will be really disappointed! I don't think they can make $50. an hour. The car wash is a better idea. That way you don't make people feel like they have to pay for a service that is usually free.

Work for it...

If the squd washed cars from 10-3 they would have more than enough money to go. People are not willing to drop money in a bucket these days.

is Monique in charge of the

is Monique in charge of the money??

Agree. No work ethic.

I'm no longer giving a dime to any school-related group standing outside Publix, begging, no matter what the cause. I will pay them to wash my car. I will pay them for goods they produce, such as baked goods. But I'm not encouraging panhandling by rewarding this behavior. Parents and school advisers, you should be ashamed.

Next careers

Its the formal training they need to suceed as free loaders when they are old enough to become someone elses problem.

I agree

If they work for it, I could care less but the giving days are over with MONIQUE and RANDY AVACADO
