Thanks to auxiliary for supporting mission

The Star of the Sea Foundation would like to thank the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, in conjunction with local Post 3911, for graciously donating $600. The ladies always give steady supply of nonperishable food items to the Star of the Sea food pantry on Stock Island. The Mission thanks the Ladies Auxiliary for their continued support. Without such help from the community, our Mission would not be able to operate and serve our needy.

Pet supply store is part of the solution

Stand Up for Animals would like to thank Dog 30 pet supply store for its recent donation of pet supplies to the Marathon and Big Pine shelters. We would also like to commend this store for not selling dogs!

Any pet store that markets designer dogs is perpetuating the heinous puppy mill trade. Instead, Dog 30 displays posters of shelter dogs and offers shelter cats (already spayed or neutered) for adoption.

Thanks, Dog 30, for being part of the solution rather than the problem.

Some annoying things about contemporary TV

I can only afford to receive one of the smallest cable TV package, which does not include any premium channels. They're all disgusting to watch.

Why does every channel continually have their logo in the lower right hand corner of the screen for the entire time of each program? It's very distracting, and many times blocks out something in the program. I know which channel I'm watching because I selected it.

Now, during the shows, some of the channels flash upcoming programs across the bottom of the screen. The Animal Planet site has now moved their logo to the upper right corner of the screen, and that's even more distracting. I don't know if it's federal law that the channel logos must be continually shown, but its absolutely distracting and disgusting.

Several news channels continuously have other news information running across the bottom of the screen while the newscaster is talking about other items. The cable TV needs to be cleaned up.

Another disgusting TV item is the thousands of prescription and medications commercials ... advertising for their company and products by asking you to "ask or tell your doctor," and requesting their product. One evening, in the commercials within a 30-minute news program we were asked 11 times to ask our doctor about their products.

... I've heard that if the doctor prescribes their product for you, the doctor gets a money kickback, and you get no money and you buy the product. I'm sorry, but if your physician doesn't know what medication you need for your health problem, I suggest that you switch to another doctor. ...
