A lifelong Marathon resident and well-known charter fishing captain, columnist and store owner was found dead at Crane Point Hammock Monday morning of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, reports say.
Dave Navarro was 51.
Friends reported him missing to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office on Monday.
News of his death sent shock waves through the Florida Keys fishing community.
"Everybody is in shock," said Capt. Donnie Braswell, a friend and fellow charter boat captain. "He was a great benefit to the Keys."
Navarro was perhaps best known for his World Class Angler bait and tackle shop, where the sign out front frequently displayed topical humorous messages. On Tuesday, it simply read "Dave -- tight lines."
Navarro also was the captain of Dave's Dream, a charter boat, and wrote a fishing column for several local newspapers and other fishing-related publications.
"I always read his accurate reports," said Capt. Scott Hoppe, who hosts a morning fishing show on WFFG in Marathon. Navarro was a frequent guest and great friend to the station, Hoppe said, adding that his reports were read worldwide. "He didn't candy coat the situation."
Navarro would share the latest tips, tricks and news about the Keys fishing scene during weekly seminars at his shop.
"It was unbelievable; the place would be packed," said Mike Puto, Navarro's friend, longtime Marathon resident and former city manager. "The people loved it."
Friends said he is survived by two daughters.
Information about services were not available late Tuesday.
