Keys fishing expert commits suicide

A lifelong Marathon resident and well-known charter fishing captain, columnist and store owner was found dead at Crane Point Hammock Monday morning of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, reports say.

Dave Navarro was 51.

Friends reported him missing to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office on Monday.

News of his death sent shock waves through the Florida Keys fishing community.

"Everybody is in shock," said Capt. Donnie Braswell, a friend and fellow charter boat captain. "He was a great benefit to the Keys."

Navarro was perhaps best known for his World Class Angler bait and tackle shop, where the sign out front frequently displayed topical humorous messages. On Tuesday, it simply read "Dave -- tight lines."

Navarro also was the captain of Dave's Dream, a charter boat, and wrote a fishing column for several local newspapers and other fishing-related publications.

"I always read his accurate reports," said Capt. Scott Hoppe, who hosts a morning fishing show on WFFG in Marathon. Navarro was a frequent guest and great friend to the station, Hoppe said, adding that his reports were read worldwide. "He didn't candy coat the situation."

Navarro would share the latest tips, tricks and news about the Keys fishing scene during weekly seminars at his shop.

"It was unbelievable; the place would be packed," said Mike Puto, Navarro's friend, longtime Marathon resident and former city manager. "The people loved it."

Friends said he is survived by two daughters.

Information about services were not available late Tuesday.

For 5 years Dave was my boss, my landlord, and above all my friend. My name is Joe Cellamare and i worked at world class for over four years. In that time Dave taught me more about fishing, friendship and life in general then anybody in my entire life. I moved to Maine in Dec of 2006 knowing i was leaving a a huge part of my life and my heart behind in marathon. i was blessed with meeting many great people while living and working there but above all Dave Navarro was the most caring, giving, and influential of them all. He had the biggest heart of anybody i have ever known. To Julie and Michelle: know that your father was a wonderful man and and will never never stop loving you. From all corners of the globe, from myself in Maine to Junji in Thailand and Sue in New Jersey, Dave will forever leave a hole in hearts and souls across the world. Thank you Dave.

Dave Navarro's Death

The Florida Keys are a special place, this 137 mile long chain of islands has a flavor unlike any other area in Florida. Consequently, there have been many men that played significant roles in developing its aura and its vivid mystique. Moreover, a lot of these fellas were characters with playful attributes with unique colorful personalities…Capt. Dave Navarro was one of these men. These characters, if you will, also shared a love affair for the Keys and their passion inspired people to come to our island community. The city of Marathon owes a large debt of gratitude to Capt. Dave Navarro. I worked closely with Dave on a number of fishing tournaments and other fishing related events over the years. Dave’s seemingly unlimited generosity and benevolence when it came to Marathon was inspiring. Dave was always the first to step up to the plate with donations or help if the fishing community needed something. Dave was a throwback to the times when if you needed something you count on your neighbor to lend you a hand. Dave, I hope somewhere, someway you’re able to read this because I can’t personally thank you enough for all you did for me. In closing, and on lighter note, (which Dave would probably appreciate) to all of Dave’s friends out there… I know much of Jimmy Buffett’s early inspiration for his songs and books came from characters like Captain Tony Tarracino in Key West, but can you imagine the material he could have gotten by hanging out with Dave during the some of the tarpon tournaments! God Bless You Dave Navarro… Your friend, Darryl Wheatley

RIP Dave

You will be missed!

This was man who not only ran a classic local bait shop

But also put his stake in making our community attractive and viable to tourism. Dave also supported any local guide who needed fishing gear, tools, and knowledge to provide a successful fishing trip to their clients. Dave covered all aspects of recreation on the water from snorkeling to stalking bonefish on the flats. He kept prices competetive and attractive to all customers. In short Dave was a valuable asset to Marathon and the Florida Keys. Above all this he was a freind to anyone who came seeking his advise. I will miss him but I am very lucky to have known him! Goodbye my fishing buddy thanks for all your advice and for the times you taught me how to be a better fisherman and human being! Tony P. Florida Keys Fish Finders

A terrible loss

Your Dad

My name is Bill Powers. We live outside Chicago and met you a few times years ago at the shop.My wife Marion and my three kids Jaime, Tim and Kelly dearly loved your Dad. We met him approx 20 years ago at Faro. I talked with your Dad every week or so most recently 3 weeks before he died. I am a klutz (age 55) as far as technology goes so have never before realized how I might be able to connect with you. I think about him all the time still.Your Dad was the best friend I ever had. After hearing the tragic news almost one year ago I flew down to the keys and spoke at his memorial service that Kim arranged. I said that Dave was the most loyal, fun and enthusiastic person I have ever known. I guess I thought we'd be hanging out in his office and fishing together forever and that our families would be lifelong friends. Anyway he will always be my best friend and I would love to be your friend. With all the wierd stuff you hear about the internet I don't blame you if you are put off by my message, but give me a chance. Mama Tony, the brick, Pigeon, "that was interesting"My email is billpowers3@gmail.com and my cell is (847) 309 2760 Life is a lot less fun without your Dad. Bill Powers

The Nicest Guy

I ever dealt with in the FL Keys. I helped Dave for years with his computer needs at WCA until I moved away in 2003. Out of literally the hundreds of customers I had, Dave was by far the best. I still remember going in and dealing with Dave and Dave and Kenny and I looked forward to every visit. Not because of the work he offered, but just having a chance to interact with "the crew". Dave knew I loved fresh fish and when he called for my services he would always tell my wife "make sure he brings the cooler" for all the fish he would give me. I remember his beautiful family that would be there from time to time, and how I knew he had the world by the tail. I will never forget Dave as being the most generous, down to earth and giving person I have known for as long as I live. Richard Justin - Montreal, Canada

I don't really remember you but i bet my father loved us very much, and thank you for reconizing my sister and I. It was devistating to hear the news, my father called my sister and my mother and me the night when it happend telling us thats he's going to visit his sister and mother. I knew he was going to die, he did'nt want to tell usw this but we needed to hear his voice one more time. My sister has recently blocked him from her life and my mother and I are trying to bring him back to Michelle. And we miss him dearly And I'm trying to make contact with everyone that knew my father, and them the terrible news.
