Three teens held in mugging
Assault is the fourth on Old Town streets since July 8

Three teenagers were arrested Wednesday night in connection with the fourth violent attack on Key West streets in the past three weeks.

In an assault similar -- but apparently unrelated -- to three other recent attacks, 41-year-old Peter Cohens was mugged by three youths as he was walking on Duval Street around 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to a police report. Cohens told officers the youths attacked him from behind, hitting him in the back of the head.

Cohens fell to the ground and the youths kicked him in the ribs while demanding money, police said. His ribs were bruised, but the attackers reportedly did not get any money.

Cohens identified three suspects in a photo lineup, and the three teens admitted involvement in the assault, said Key West Police Department spokeswoman Alyson Crean.

Otha Matthews, 16, Thomas Sipos, 15, and Martin Jonis, 16, were arrested on felony charges of attempted robbery. All are in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Police still are looking for two youths involved in a July 8 assault on a visitor staying at a Fleming Street guesthouse.

And in two separate assaults on July 13, two residents were attacked while walking in an Old Town neighborhood near the city cemetery. About 9 p.m., 65-year-old Don Sullivan was assaulted and robbed by four youths in the 600 block of Elizabeth Street, near his home. Minutes later, the same four youths allegedly attacked activist and City Commission candidate Tom Milone, 63, at the intersection of Frances and Angela streets. Milone's injuries, including a broken jaw, were serious enough to require an airlift to Miami.

Four teenagers were arrested a day later in connection with those attacks. Christopher Harris, 17, Cornelius Jones, 17, Thomas Reza, 16, and Jonathan Bein-Aine, 18, were charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and robbery.

While the attacks have been similar, there's no one factor indicating they all are related, Crean said. They appear to be random acts of violence, she said.

"It's not an organized gang issue," she said. "None of the kids are from any one neighborhood. It's hard to speculate."

Key West Police Chief Donie Lee is taking a hard line on the assaults.

"I'm concerned about the growing number of recent attacks," he said Thursday. "But one thing is clear, we will not tolerate this sort of violence in our community."

Last week, Lee addressed the assaults during a Citizens Police Academy seminar, in which he called on businesses and residents for help, saying it's a "community issue," not just a police issue.

"I can't solve the problem alone," Lee told the group.

Police cannot be omnipresent. But, yes, perhaps more foot patrol/bike patrol may assist in preventing more crime. Police presence certainly makes me feel safer when I walk alone. At the same time, I do not blame ALL of the department if I am mugged and no cop was there to prevent it. I would blame ALL of the department if nothing was done to resolve such a crime, but in this case, these arrestees were caught in less than a week. And I agree the police who treat their shift at Charles and Duval like social hour are taking advantage of the public's trust. But these sweeping statements are unjust to all parties involved. These juveniles could just be bad eggs, (or maybe not?) And if they are, hey, they were caught. -Julia (small business owner, Solares Hill resident, no-afraid-to-sign-me-name.) p.s. I will still patronize Big John's pizza.

Lot of fear, anger, and worry here.

And some thoughtful observations about "solutions".Has our esteemed Mayor offered any pearls of wisdom? The very sad truth is that ALL of the heartfelt recommendations pale compared to one of these punks having his intestines blown out his backside. That would bring it all to a halt.Now. Faster than all the cop's and parent's most earnest efforts. I really hope it doesn't come to that. But I do worry. Just one CCP holder taking a late night walk....Thinking he's doing the community a favor....

And he won't look a bit like Bronson or De niro..

Most likely a person that just needs to walk or ride home safely from a late night job they need to support themselves. And don't want to get beat to death for a few bucks and some jewelry.Or for some bored punk's "entertainment".(You do know,as already voiced here, that will be thier "defense".They were bored...)I know a small gay man that they best steer clear of....Bored or not.

A waste of police resources we pay for

First, if a business such as a bar requires a lot of police resources due to violent customers and so forth, it should pay a special assessment for that. Why should all the taxpayers of Key West pay for the large police presense at Ricks and the other bars in that area. The bars should pay for it, because they are certainly using far more police resources than their taxes are paying. Secondly, if we did not have lazy cops, they would be walking beats up and down Duval and other problem areas instead of just speeding by with all their windows up blasting their AC. They can't hear a thing in those cars... you can scream for help as they drive by and they don't hear a thing and just keep going. Get their fat butts out of the squad cars and do some real police work.

The problem is not the

The problem is not the Police or the school system it's the kids and their parents. Right now I bet that you could ride passed the bike bridge on Staples Avenue and you would see the crew that these three boys hang out with. They are all violent young punks looking for trouble. One of them lives right at the entrance to the bridge. This is a gang in every sense of the word and they need to be treated as such. Police get over their and take care of them.

Too many simliar comments lead me to believe they are true

If officers are assigned to keep an eye on troublesome establishments on Duval, the city should mandate those places hire detail officers to keep their patrons in line. Revoke their liquor license after so many problems. Then the regular patrol officers can get out into the streets. A few more stories like this and people will start thinking very seriously about thier vacation spots... and that won't be good.

Bubba Chief

Our police chief needs to stop kissing the rear ends of the mayor and commissioners and get more concerned about the residents. His police officers gather at the Denny's after the bars close. If you were be assaulted, you would have to go there for help. The status of our police department is disgusting. If he can't do the job, get out and lets find a professional who can.

What's Chief Lee to do

What can we expect from a police department that has officers like Del-Cid who are so scared of people that she needs a restraining order against the ex-wife of her new beau, seems like he doesn't have a lot to work with

Where are the photos of these brats?

I want to see their pictures so that I know them when I see them. I'm sure their mommies and daddies will be bailing them out immediately, so they can do more harm. I believe the MCSO needs to be posting pictures of minors from here on. Perhaps the shame and humiliation that their parents feel will be helpful in encouraging other parents to actually do their job and SUPERVISE their seed.

KWHS Yearbook

All you have to do is pick up a KWHS yearbook. These thugs are in there in the mug shots.... i mean, school pictures.

Concealed carry permit

One day these punks are going to attack someone with a legal concealed weapon, and, you can believe it punks, it will not be your lucky day. I would suggest more responsible citizens look into concealed carry permits, get a gun you are comfortable with, and go to Miami to a gun range and practice; or, as an alternative for those uncomfortable with guns, Fox 5.3 pepper spray. Make the punks uncomfortable for a while.

Guns?

Just what we need, people shooting one another. It's just a matter of time before the drive-by shootings start and the thug/gangs of bored teens start carrying real guns instead of the pellet guns available up and down Duval. How do you think that is going to affect the tourist trade when someone gets killed?????????????

Tourist trade

It will probably affect it about the same as when people hear teenage punks are roaming the streets beating the crap out of people. I did not say everyone should get a gun. Reading is fundamental. I also recommended Fox Labs 5.3. Spray the crap out of these punks. Grow a pair and fight back. How you equate a responsible citizen who QUALIFIES for a concealed carry permit with a drive-by shootings is beyond me. Fuzzy logic in la-la land I guess.

What's the Sentence going to be?

An arrest is one thing, let's see what the DA does with these felony charges. Probation, perhaps a little community service? PUT THEM IN JAIL, LET THEM ROT! When their parents cry, maybe, just maybe, they will realize they are part of the problem. PLEEEAASSEEE Citizen, let us know what the sentence is. Don't drop the story at this.....

Broken System = Repeat offending youth

In this case, it's too bad youth offender records are confidential. If they weren't, you'd be able to see just how many times the juveniles arrested Wednesday have been arrested in the past. One of them alone has at least three prior felony arrests! THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! It's hard enough for the police to solve these crimes and when they do arrest them, it seems these juveniles just keep doing it over and over again. The reason people are not more up in arms about this is that they don't know the same kids are committing crimes over and over again. HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE THIS TIME PLEASE!

I'm more upset...

at the fact that these kids are from well known families and not poor ones either. You can expect this behavior from someone at the poverty line but these kids do it for fun, why becuase they have nothing else to do...and yes they do it becuase they have nothing else to do. I know Otha personally, I know alot of the kids that he hangs around and they all have nothing better to do than hang around town doing drugs and other misc. crap like this. This town needs to stop neglecting its youth and do something for the children on a constant basis. This isnt coming from a teenager either, I know Otha but I'm 22 and I still see first hand what all these kids do in key west. Key West should be ashamed that it has let it self slip into the developers and tourism, which are going to be high tailing it soon leaving us with nothing. I miss the old key west...even though I'm only 22 there was still a time where key west was more homely than it is now, and you can ask anyone that has lived on this island the same question and ask them has the changes in the bast 15, 10, 5 years been good or bad? If I knew how to I'de run for a posistion in the city just so I can go after the people that turned this town upside down, and try and get this place back to what it originally was, my quirky island home.

It was 3 am... I hope you don't think we should be running

teen events at that time. You could run events all day, it won't affect the night time doings of thugs. Their parents are problem #1. I bet not one of them has the guts to take away their kids, IPhone, IPod or driving rights to prove a point.

Having nothing to do does

Having nothing to do does not excuse these children's behavior. The basic moral values are still valid today. Regardless of their circumstances, these children know right from wrong.

Having Nothing to Do????

I have never met a kid that lived in a place that "Had a LOT to do." My sister has a kid in Phoenix with "nothing to do". My other sister has a kid in Iowa City/ University of Iowa with "nothing to do." I grew up in a town of 30... that is 30 total people. And believe me.. there was no fricking thing to do.. except work, or do sports, or read, or watch tv, or hang around with your friends. But as far as I know, none of us found sport in beating the hell out of people that were smaller or older than we were. It is hard to not become infuriated by the parrents, the court system, the cops who sit on the ass most of the time around here, or the kids themselves. But the point I guess is you do the crime, you do the time. If no one learns from this at least these punks are off the street.

Exactly.....

All kids, regardless of geography, feel like they "have nothing to do" and there is a deep rooted problem within the family or the child if the obvious conclusion of "have nothing to do" is to go out and beat the heck out of someone for no apparent reason. Something is seriously wrong here...where is compassion? volunteering to help someone? doing good? yeah, how about going out a doing good, just for the heck of it, when you "have nothing to do"? On another note, I think the parents of these children should incurr the cost of medical bills to the victim plus pain and suffering. That is the least they can do. And, I for one will not be visiting a business (Big John's Pizza) to give them my money when their children are terrorizing our neighborhood. Maybe if they feel the pain in their wallets then they will actually do something whith thier kid...maybe some good psychiatric care or send him to a boot camp somewhere?

Come on

Oh yeah, it's the city's fault for these sub-humans' behavior. If only the city would provide some entertainment to keep these creeps amused so they won't attack innocents. This is the mentality that perpetuates this kind of behavior. Not my fault,man...........

I love my new I-phone...

My new phone comes with a video camera that takes great video. I'm gonna take video of our entire wonderful Key West police department hanging out next to Rick's this weekend. Coming soon to You Tube...stay tuned.

Drive by Rick's Bar and strip club any weekend night...

If you drive by this area on any weekend night, you will see the side street there jammed with cop cars and cops. They stand around talking and laughing it up. If they patrolled the streets,,,,yeah, walked their overpaid butts up and down the residential area, talking to residents, and waving to the people who pay their salaries, that alone would work as a deterrent to teenage thugs. Also, the issue no one is talking about is that these kids are singling out older gay men to beat up. They think this is funny. I would think that our GAY police chief would be more sensitive to this, and tell his underlings in the ally next to Mr. Rossi's strip club/bar complex to at least walk up and down Duval or to patrol residential high crime areas in their cop cars. I am so damn tired of paying taxes and getting nothing in return from it. It can be easily fixed with good old common sense and fairness to the tax payer. It's not brain surgery, folks. Being a cop in this town is the easiest, over paid job in this town. When they do acts, it's to arrest people that don't even deserve it or to beat people up in handcuffs. Oh boy, and now they are getting stun guns. I sincerely hope they don't kill someone over something stupid like a traffic violation. What a joke of a police department. They spend more time fighting the Citizen Review Board that oversees them, put their unanymously by the voters, than they do fighting crimes on our streets. You cops are an embarrassment to our city and a waste of our taxes. I suggest to the people in key west that you arm yourself with mace because while school is out, and these thugs are bored, vandalism, beating up gays, and smashing your car windows to steal stuff, is how they pass the time.

Don't foget the MCSO. They're as greasy as the KWPD cops

While the issue is that the KWPD cops spend so much time at the strip bars, don't forget that the MCSO's big-time detectives, investigators and SWAT team members spend a great amount of their off time in the strip clubs, getting lap dances. That's the thing with cops - they're really just criminals with the permit to be thugs. What's really bad is that they do this while their families are at home, being supportive of them.

That is why....

...we need a nude beach...another great investment to promote positive activities for teenagers.

Can't Solve the Problem Alone?

I'm glad to read that the KW Police Chief is not going to tolerate this violence. However, he's not alone. He has a whole force behind him! They should be roving around and patroling. They should be more visible and not just at select locations on and off Duval. It's called 'management by walking around." Inviting businesses and residents to get involved may backfire into something akin to vigilantism. Unless this comment was taken out of context and he was inviting businesses and residents to open up lines of communication. I'll give him benefit of the doubt if that is the case.

RE: Chief Lee

Chief Lee is a nice guy, but he doesn't hold his police officers acountable. He caught officers cheating on a test and, recently, had one shoot a hole in a wall of the police station. They all received light disciplinary action. A slap on the wrists does not instill discipline and order in an organization like the KWPD.

What about Challenge Day

I certainly hope the Monroe County School Board disbands this program. We have a very serious and growing problem in our community and Challenge Day is nothing more than window dressing and a waste of money. I would love to know how many of these kids are "graduates" of Challenge Day? When these kids see the corruption and intimidation in our school system, no wonder they think these types of actions are OK.

Couldn't find another

Couldn't find another article to post about the school board so you thread jack this one. This has absolutely nothing to do with the school board or challenge day and everything to do with the hands-off parenting going in in this and other communities. It is the outcome of people having children that should never have been allowed to do so. Hold these parents responsible as well and maybe some of this type of behavior will end.

Otha Matthews is the

Otha Matthews is the grandson of Otha Cox and Martin Jonis is the son of the people that own Big Johns Pizza. These kids think it's fun to be "Gangsta" well lets send them upstate and introduce them to "Real Gangsta"

brat wannabees

so your bad ass wants to be a gangsta huh!well upstate for you.play hide the weenie with real punks.be the new poster child for tough guy.oh well, one can hope.probly get religion and come home to take public office.go figure.....

Marin Jonis...no suprise

Marin Jonis...no suprise here. This is exactly where I thought he'd be in 10 years. He was in my son's 2nd grade class and couldn't look me straight in the eye back then. This is not the last you will see of that name tied to delinquency...well for the next 2 years anyway. Then he'll just be an bonafide adult criminal.

Menace to Society

I agree! You are very right. Parents and teachers knew at this early age that this kid was going to be trouble. As he aged his attitude got worse and as a teenager he constantly demonstrated a total lack of respect for his elders or other teenagers. I know of a couple adults that had run-ins’ with him and were disgusted with the level of disrespect he demonstrated. I’m told being a minor saved him in two of these occasions, otherwise the verbal confrontation would’ve turned physical and he would’ve ended up in the hospital instead. He knows he is protected by his age and pushes it to the limit. Since his H.O.B. years he hung around with and was mentored by other juvenile delinquents’ like DeWitt Roberts who is well known by Key West Police officers. His parents created a Menace to Society which they allow to run free in our community. What was this 16 year old doing out at 3:00am? Prosecute them as adults and send a message to the rest of the punks in our community! Hold their parents responsible financially.

Otha Cox's grandson?

The fact that the Milone mugging was not a "one-shot deal" and now this shows that there is something seriously wrong going on in our community. And what's these kids' motivation? Do they get kicks from being cruel? Do they want money for drugs? When the word gets out that it's unsafe in Key West, this situation is going to co$t the community plenty.

We could have police

on every street corner if the property owners in Key West would like to see their taxes increase 1,000 fold. The Police do patrol every street in Key West, including staying close to the number one trouble spots in the city on lower Duval. Let's get real about this. In most cities the Police would put this on a back-burner and never solve the crime. We're lucky to have a Detective Division that knows how to solve crimes, quietly without fanfare.

Cops patrolling every street

To that I say B...S...!! NO WAY

So....even if they don't patrol every street, is it ok for a cop

to respond to a B&E call 20 minutes later during the afternoon? NO. There's a serious problem with the KWPD and this lacksidasical response time is not acceptable under any circumstance. The guy who was robbed in the B & E should be able to SUE the City of Key West and the KWPD for doing no better than that. He has plenty of witnesses in the neighborhood.

Real Close

Yes... Mostly huddled around each other in the alley by Ricks.. often with their car running. We need cops to walk a beat... like the old days. Or cops on Bikes in old town so they can actually see things and interact with people. It is called community policing. We all see the cop cars in parking lots for their meetings, or in the coffee shops for half hours at a time for 2-3 cops. This is a tourist town for those of you that live in Hilton Haven... it requires safety. It means that the cops have to do what they are paid to do... be cops. Work. Walk or cover a beat. Be visable. We don't need 4 cops in a corner. We need each cop to be out on his own making sure he is visable... not just up to date on the latest police love stories in town.

At the Scene of the Crime there are always at least Two People

The Criminal and the Victim

When you need help in seconds the police (despite all their good intentions) are only minutes away

Arm and protect yourself. Only after the criminals leave do the police get there talk to the victims.

Unarmed only guarantees you victim status

Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is the definition of insanity

Nothing else works for mere citizens here in bubba town, why expect the police force headed by bubba Donie Lee to work for you?

Minutes away? H ow about half an hour?

I can't count the number of times the police have been called over something serious and they show up a half hour later. I'm not impressed with the Key Stone Cops here.

If bubba Police Chief Donie Lee Was Really Taking a Hard Line ..

.... he would have his cops out on patrol instead of peeking in our porcine city commissioner's strip joint in the alley off Duval all night

In other Breaking News our concerned mayor spent Wednesday evening at Cowboy Bills protecting the topless bull riders from muggings

You mean the Reverend Billy McPhearson.....

You mean the Mayor the Minister? Must be why he is against the clothing optional beach. It doesn't have bull riding. Aren't all these good church do gooders the same?? He would fit in well with the other boys in Washington with our Family Values near and dear to their heart... not to mention their pants.

Reverend Mcpherson

We all know that he's a hypocrite. He claims that people are going to burn for being nude, but I guess getting wasted and not paying bar tabs will get you a mansion in the sky. I can't believe this town re-elected him.

Maybe he was investigating

Maybe he was investigating the rape that happened there in 2006.

Hope and change

Maybe we should have an outreach to the poor young men who, through no fault of their own, are forced to commit these crimes.

I hope you are kidding.

In this liberal society everyone is a victim, so who can we blame? The victims who got beat up (obviously walking in wrong part of town), the kids who come from low income families (can't afford proper eduction and activities to keep them occupied), the families who do not have high paying jobs (how can they work for minimum wage, that is just embarassing), the city for not providing enough services (more services mean more taxes and more complaints), the state, the federal government, etc. It is always easier to blame others then to shoulder the blame yourself. The whole country is falling apart and our future looks bleak to say the least.

I hope you're being sarcastic because if not, this is one of the

worst comments I've ever read in this paper. Obviously as posted above, one is hardly a 'poor' young man and I'm betting his Bubba-buds aren't either. They just haven't been parented and are not being supervised, and their parents are every bit as guilty as they are and BOTH should be doing hard time for this crime.

Better get this fixed

When potential home buyers, tourists and business owners read that they can't take a walk around town without facing a beat down, Key West has a serious problem. It's bad enough that our school leadership is headed for jail time. But, no one in his or her right mind will invest in a community where roving teenage gangs are whacking at strangers. I am surprised there's not outrage over this, coupled with demands to see entire criminal justice system out in force and leadership making it happen. I live in a city with the state's highest crime rate, and nothing around here is as daunting as what's happening in Key West.

throw the book at these kids

Those who commit violent crimes should do HARD TIME even if they are youths. No leniency for them. They almost killed a key west resident.
