Board seeks Acevedo ouster (Updated with report link)

The Monroe County School Board will ask the state to remove Schools Superintendent Randy Acevedo for "executive malfeasance, misfeasance and dereliction of duty," it agreed Tuesday after hearing an investigator's final report into the alleged theft of district money.

At its next meeting on Aug. 25, the board officially will vote on sending the report to Gov. Cha...

John Dick

I certainly hope John Dick becomes Chairman of the School Board. Someone with a consistent record of reform needs to be in command. He knows right from wrong. Our children deserve his guidance. His performance speaks for itself.

It's important to send a message - a big message

FIRE all those that are culpable for this mess and who are listed in the report. Every last one of them. And the retirees? Well, if they have any contract work with the County at all, terminate the contracts for malfeasance. If they have any relatives, it's time to focus on them as well and make it a family affair. That'll take the glow off the old nepotism thing, won't it?

Another important step

... is to get John Dick elected as the Chairman of the School board. He was the major force in stirring the pot enough to make this whole sordid mess come to light. Neither Andy, nor Debra, nor Duncan have what it takes to confront folks when it needs to be done. When they have not been downright supportive of the crooks, they have just wanted to sweep everything under the carpet, hoping it will go away.

John Dick for Chairman

John needs to be the Chairman this year. After the dispicable way Andy Griffiths campaigned for and then made a deal with Bookie and Randy to get the job, there is no way we want him back. If there was ever a Sunshine Law violation, it was last year when Andy made a deal with Debra and Duncan to give him the job. It is John's rightful turn, Steve did a great job when he was Chairman, but John has the guts to see this through. He can stand up the the Bookie crowd and the Randites who will be fighting anything that the new Superintendent wants to change. We need John Dick as Chairman

Gone

Henriquez MUST br removed now!

I just read the report

A lot of heads need to roll. They don't need a tax increase this year. The District has plenty of money and they will have a lot more when the freight of these employees is removed. They just need to fire these people and clean up the waste that is rampant throughout the district. This is a case study in incompetence and mismanagement. Look at the job titles in the report. Everybody has a different title. Reminds me of an episode of Cheers!

Do you know the link to the report?

It's just above the comments, under the article and HUGE.

Look up.

Seven Deadly Sins

During the board meeting yesterday, Lafferty referred numerous time to the "Seven Deadly Sins" - in connection with dismissal and administration. Could someone please elaborate?

Gilligan

Gilligan represents ignorance(1) the Capt, sloth (2) the professor, arrogance (3), the millionare, greed (4) Ginger, conceit (5) Marianne, ????(6) and Lovey, ?????? (7) Come-on, someone help me out here

The 7 Sins of Gilligans Island

Ok, I Googled it. Found it here: http://ttlf.tripod.com/gilligan.html. Below is essentially a cut 'n' paste:

Most obvious is the Professor, who fits PRIDE to a T. Any man who can make a ham radio out of some wire and two coconuts has to be pretty cocky. His character was later revised and given a series of his own, called "MacGyver."

For the sin of ENVY we need look no further than Maryann, who may have worn those skimpy little tops, but could never achieve Ginger's glamour. (As an interesting and completely irrelevant side note, a nationwide survey of college students a few years ago revealed that the professor and Maryann were voted the most likely couple to have 'done it' on the island.)

And who could doubt for a moment that Ginger is LUST incarnate? Sure, the kids were supposed to think she was ACTING, but we all know what being deprived episode after episode was doing to her. You know and I know that glazed look wasn't boredom, my friends.

What kind of person takes a trunk full of money on a three-hour cruise? Mr.Howell gets my vote for GREED.

We are now left with three characters and three Deadly Sins. We have Gilligan, the Skipper and Mrs. Howell to whom we must match GLUTTONY, SLOTH and ANGER. As you can see, there is a Gilligan problem here.

Certainly we can further eliminate Mrs. Howell from this equation by connecting her with SLOTH. She did jack during her many years on the island and everybody knows it.

This leaves ANGER and GLUTTONY, either of which the Skipper had no shortage. He was, after all, a big guy with the tendency to hit Gilligan with his hat at least once an episode. After much consideration, I have decided that he can easily do double-duty, covering the two remaining Deadly Sins.

So here we have the Seven Deadly Sins trapped in an endlessly recurring Hell of hope followed by denial and despair, forced to live with each other in our TVs until the last re-run ends. And who is their captor? What keeps them trapped there? Gilligan.

SATAN SATAN FAUST - Gilligan is SATAN. Think about it.

7 deadly sins

Gilligan, the capt., the proffessor,Ginger, the millionaire and his wife, Lovey, and....darn! what's her name?

7 deadly sins

lust, envy, greed, gluttony, anger, pride, sloth

Gilligan analogy

OK, here goes: Sloth/ Giligan who could this be mmmmmmmmmmmmmm Greed/ Millionaire...no second guesses here Anger/ the Capt......could be a group? Lust/ Ginger.......but isn't she retired? Envy/ Marianne....this is a tuffy Pride/ Prof.......you can do it Gluttony/Luvy.....have fun with this

Mike Henriquez.. What an idiot

"I wasn't sure that I was to look at the individual receipts,". I can't beleive that this idiot is running the school board. Mike Henriquez should be arrested for allowing Monique, who was under his direct control, to steal so much money for so long. I cannot beleive that the School Board is allowing this man to take over the top job when he is one of the idividuals that allowed the stealing to happen. Are there a bunch of fools making decisions on the Board. Fire Mike, Kathy, Dori, Mark Hooper and Linda Walker. Clean up the house for our kids.

Receipts....

This is standard business and GAAP practice in America. While our employee pool is limited, ignorance cannot be tolerated. This is the man we set at the top?

The old Conch mentality is "they will all be gone tomorrow - so we'll just wait a day." Today, former Conchs are coming back with degrees and morales from the mainland. They are building businesses and starting respectable lives. As they grow up the last names will be the same, but their acceptance of "Bubba Law" will not.

Thankfully they have been taught better and have a new stronger morale fiber. We will see a better Key West in the future.

Crist is too busy campaigning to do anything

The Senate hearing committee has bigger fish to fry. Nothing will get done unless he is found guilty in his court trial.

The Fat Fox in Hen House-Henriquez

This guy makes me sick. I'm appalled that he is running the district. Isn't this evidence enough to remove him?

Henriquez -one of the biggest criminals

I've been saying all along that Henriquez was the direct supervisor of Monique's while she was committing these alledged crimes, but so many posters here argued with me. So now you have it: YES, he was and is as guilty as his friend Randy by looking the other way. "While sitting in for his vacationing or otherwise absent predecessor, former Deputy Superintendent Frankie St. James, Henriquez approved more than $10,000 of Monique Acevedo's purchases from 2006 to 2007, including fireworks, DVDs, clothes, groceries, a ceiling fan and airline tickets for her family members, the report says. As investigator Richard Fechter on Tuesday summarized Henriquez's reported failure to prevent the alleged fraud, the acting superintendent said he did not look at the individual store receipts when signing the form, only verified that the credit card bill and payment request form were for the same amount. "I wasn't sure that I was to look at the individual receipts," Henriquez said. "You made sure the bank statement amount matched the front page of the payment request form." WHAT A sad excuse for a man!

The question is

did Ms. St. James approve any of the purchases when she was NOT vacationing or otherwise absent? And if so, are there any consequences for her in this regard? I heard that it was reported on a Keys radio station that Frankie has been asked to testify but will do so only if granted immunity. Is this true? If so, can someone expand on this.

Now let's see some action!!

FIRE Hooper, Henriquez, Reitzel, Walker, Collins. Now that you have the cause, take action. Let the public see you have what it takes, School Board. Griffiths needs to pull his name out of the hat for Chairman and let John Dick have his rightful place in that position this Nov.

Kathy Reitzel

You rigged the election. You let Acevedo run for office again knowing damn well what was happening. You need to go down and NOW! I think the opposition should sue you for this cover-up.

Who Need's Randy When Bookie Has Mikey In Place

Now Bookie just has to get Morgan McPherson back for another term as mayor and bubba business can continue as usual

'13 Guiding Principles'

1. Assume that fraud, theft, and embezzlement are occurring — look for it.

2. Assume that mismanagement exists — look for it.

3. Assume that here is waste in the system — look for it.

4. Assume that financial management controls are inadequate — constantly review and tighten the process.

5. Assume that staff has not been properly trained and educated in budget management — provide on-going training particularly for key personnel.

6. Assume that there are employees who know where there is fraud, waste, and mismanagement — encourage, reward, and resolutely protect “whistle-blowers.”

7. Assume that any report or information dealing with financial matters does not provide sufficient details — seek more details.

8. Assume that board policies are not being implemented properly — ask for progress reports.

9. Assume that audits do not uncover fraud — insist on forensic auditing.

10. Accept the fact that board members lack the skills and knowledge required to effectively monitor the budget — provide them with information and training.

11. Accept the fact that vigilance must be constant — good enough is never good enough.

12. Accept the fact that board members must have easy access to detailed information and data that are used to develop financial reports and monitor progress — seek to develop meaningful reporting systems.

13. Accept the fact that decisions made by the board will be scrutinized by the staff and the public to see if their financial rhetoric to protect school dollars from fraud, waste and mismanagement is matched against its actions — weigh every discretionary decision carefully for consistency and common sense.

School district credit card abuse, solutions

Solution # 1 : Discontinue district-issued credit cards of all kinds

Solution # 2: Monroe County School district must post their entire check register online.

Looks like Randy

won't be getting back to work now!

term end

Mr. Acevedo was re-elected in November 2008; in the past, the term was four years--has this changed? Unless it has, I don't understand why it would end in 2010.

It won't end in 2010

it will end in 2009

Term of office

Because the Governor will appoint, this position can be up for election at the next county wide election which will be in 2010. This will be for a two year position and then the position will get back on term by being elected in 2012 for a four year term.

It HAS ended in 2009!

It HAS ended in 2009!

It is and always has been a two year term

The School Board members serve four years.

It's always been a two year term?

I believe you may want to check the facts on that two year term statement. Maybe you have it confused with the Mayor's term in Key West. Or do you also believe President Obama was born in Kenya, Justice Sotomayor is a racist and healthcare reform is a secret plot to kill grandma? LOL

You are an idiot.

You are an idiot. But a confidant idiot with your misinformation.

Criminal Enterprise

is what they should have him removed for, which malfeasance basicaly is. If Gov. Charles Crist does not remove him now, there will be Malfeasance throughout, which there already is. The school board, all of them, should step aside, and let a new strain in. This new strain should be one of integrity, as well as accountablity. None of which is currently seated. The only reason this all came to fruition, is the FACT that people were put in a corner, and the guilty partie had to come down. Don't hold your breath folks, they plan on bringing many more in the limelight. I just hope that the ones brought down, will expose the rest. MAMA say's let them be heard!

Re: Criminal Enterprise

Not bad except you basically spelled basicaly and partie wrong. I was glad to see you got fruition and malfeasance right though even if it did take every comma you could possibly find to get it all in there. No I didn't forget the comma in that sentence it seems you used them all.

When they pick apart your spelling and grammar,

but can't seem to mount any valid, thoughtful, criticism of your statement, you can be fairly certain they've conceded your points to be valid. As distracting as poor sp. and grammar is, it never justifies ad hominem attacks. The attacks destroy any chance they may have had at rebuttal. They're saying you can't spell or write well, but they agree with you. These are friends of Randy's who consider themselves mental giants. Just as he does. They might spend a few minutes critiqueing his offspring Wade's "writing skills".Think that was too many commas for them?

Not Bad

Middle English partie, part, side, group. As for missing an (L) in Basically, it was a typographical error, as for the comma's, would you rather run on sentences? You got the point, or maybe you didn't and will be seated behind the Defendants when the case goes to trial..

Re: Not Bad -- My Bad

Sorry I have never been much of a fan of Geoffrey Chaucer or his The Canterbury Tales. I never "hung out" with King Henry V either. That being said I will have "partie" gretly alwey ficched in my memorie.
