Acevedo put on trash detail at national park

Suspended Schools Superintendent Randy Acevedo will perform his community service at the National Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key.

"He'll be picking up debris, helping with maintenance projects like painting signs, putting up barricades, basically habitat management," Refuge Manager Anne Morkill said Tuesday.

Acevedo will be the only convict currently performing community service at the refuge, which has had three to four such volunteers over the past year.

"I guess we were a known quantity," Morkill said, referring to the fact that the Department of Corrections office in Monroe County contacted the refuge about Acevedo performing his community service there.

Acevedo must work eight hours a month and will be supervised by the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, said Todd Koson, the local probation office supervisor.

Acevedo is finishing up a contracted information technology job with Historic Tours of America, a job he landed after Gov. Charlie Crist suspended him on June 11, the day after a grand jury indicted him.

Circuit Judge Mark Jones also sentenced Acevedo to three years' probation, a $15,000 fine and $3,200 in investigation, prosecution, court and probation fees.

He faced 15 years in jail and a $15,000 fine for the three third-degree felony counts of official misconduct for trying to cover up his wife's alleged theft of school money.

Monique Acevedo is scheduled for trial on Oct. 26.

It is our fault Randy is not in jail!

Ladies and Gents, we are the reason why Randy Acevedo is not in jail right now because other than sound off in this forum and write a couple letters to Judge Jones that were not grounded in legal precedent or had sheer numbers behind them. If we had organized with a “lets jail Randy campaign” and hired a lawyer to organize us as we went out and had the voting public sign petitions County wide, and had our lawyer present the petitions at the sentencing hearing, we might be looking at a jailed Randy right now.

Isn't everyone trusted to do their job? If they don't do they spend time in jail? Randy was found guilty of not doing his job he was not even charged with stealing from anyone because he didn't steal from anyone his wife did and she will do time for it.

He may not have stolen anything, but he certainly knew his wife was, as evidenced by him writing a check to pay back the money for the plane tickets his wife charged on her school credit card. He also put her in a job she was not qualified for, thats what happens when you hire relatives and friends. He also tried to cover up her [alleged] theft with the fake letter from Marc House.

I hope all of his past students and all of his friends see him and drive by and wave or blow the horn or yell at him!!!!!! He's an idiot for throwing away a really great chance to do good things for the locals, and great things for himself. Randy, you're a disgrace to your heritage and a disappointment to all locals. Plus that idiot Monique. What in the hell were you thinking? Nice way to show everyone how things are all about the kids here! Loser!!!!!!!

Hiding Randy in the Refuge

Two hours per week in a place no one visits. This whole thing is disgusting. Randy was a public official, trusted by the public to be honest and committed to our children. He makes excuses, hides behind his wife and calls in his friends to help him. Randy had to know about Monique's alleged theft from the school district. In my opinion he should be charged with accessory and conspiracy to commit theft. All the politicians and leaders within the community should realize that Randy is a thief. They should also be held accountable for there endorsement of this type behaviour.

But he got off easy just as we all thought - painting signs, picking up garbage - Our streets and beaches need to be cleaned here why send him to Big Pine? WHAT A JOKE THIS IS!!!!!!

The average volunteer at the Key Deer Refuge puts in 4 hours a week. Many put in over twice that. This is punishment? Just don't let him near the donation jar.

I'm still wondering where all the non-supporters were when it was time to give character references for Randy. Too bad the judge got a biased representation of how many of us feel. These Citizen comment pages were a good practice ground but the court need to see real live people sitting up there asking for a stronger sentence.

His bad character was on display from the moment he said "I did nothing wrong". He obstructed the investigation. He repeatedly lied to the media. He hid evidence. His "apology" prior to sentencing was sociopathic. His bad character was proven by the guilty verdict in a court of law. The recommendations by the state attorney were ignored. Letters were written to the judge asking for prison time. Why would a citizen risk retaliation by the corrupt politicians and government workers and appear in person?

Plenty of us wrote serious, detailed letters to the judge

DO NOT ELECT NOR RE-ELECT ANYONE WHO FEELS IT'S OK FOR A THREE-TIME FELON TO NOT SERVE TIME!!! McPherson and Lopez and for obvious reasons the Wardlow family, does not think that felons should get off scott free which makes me wonder what they have done? Obviously they're trying to set some sort of precedent so it can be used if they end up being caught.

Let's up the scale , Let's all move to Ft. Lauderdale where 3 public officials just got busted . Must be nice that he is getting to do his community service at such a nice park. He should have been ordered to do the community service that all the other offenders of monroe county get ordered to do like cleaning up at the animal shelter or cleaning trash up throughout the city. The difference is I’m not an elected official. He took an oath to do his job right. And I think “mess up” is an understatement. He allowed his wife to (allegedly) steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from KIDS, the seeds of our future. Take your head out of the sand and look at the whole picture here. He took from every child that attends Monroe county schools. He took from every teacher that has to purchase supplies for his/her class room out of their own pocket.
