One key Challenge Day

One key Challenge Day belief; everyone needs at least 10 hugs a day! Hmmmm... depending on who is hugging who, doesn't this border into inappropriate behavior in school? Then again, let's only enforce what we want on those we choose to single out?

People, if you are not going

People, if you are not going to teach your children to behave then we have to do something about it. Maybe Challenge Day isn't the answer for you but doing nothing is what got us to this point.

Ask the Students

As a 2008 Marathon High School graduate, it deeply saddens me to see so many people fighting to rid the school district of employees who spend so much time affecting, for the better, the lives of the Keys students. I am a student at the University of Central Florida pursuing a degree in Public Administration, graduated at the top of my class at MHS, and have succeeded in all of my dreams thus far after graduating MHS. And a good portion of my success I can credit to my family, friends, and staff at MHS, including Sunny Booker. In regards to Booker not pursuing the public records request, MYCP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is not a governmental agency, and therefor does not have to release it's records simply because a public records request was made. The financial statements, as far as I know, are not public record, and does not represent a poor decision on Booker to not release them. Additionally, Booker started out as a theater teacher in Virginia, then was Assistant Principal at MHS for several years, and worked her way up to her current position, where she spends countless hours and devotes almost her entire life to the wellbeing of Monroe students. As a MHS student, I was also involved in many MYCP programs, including Challenge Day, and although some of the programs are questionable, I have seen the program do amazing things in terms of anti-bullying advocacy, tobacco, alcohol, and drug-use prevention programs, and creating mentoring opportunities for students. These are crucial programs that the school district has committed minimal funds to, and for all of you who think Booker should be "fired", take a close look at your morals and values. The school district has dedicated an entire position to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, and she has done a phenomenal job as such, regardless of her political beliefs. I challenge everyone who posts on this site, including the Citizen staff, to take a close look at the FACTS and what the school district staff has done. Don't let one sour incident (the Acevedo cases) ruin the morale of a district that had so much potential.

Graduating at the Top of MHS means nothing to Rest of World...

Compete in the real world and accomplish something of importance before you tout the significance of yourself and a Flawed Challenge Day Program that does nothing to enhance the ACADEMIC standing of American students in relationship to their counterparts world-wide...

Yeah! Sunny spends 90% of her time at work on challenge day!

If you don't believe me ask any one at the Key West district office! She believes in changing the world with challenge day. Look she was able to get the word out through Challenge day to get poor randy re-elected. You were so lucky to have her as your mentor. Can you quote some stats on how challenge day has done so many 'amazing things in terms of anti-bullying advocacy, tobacco, alcohol, and drug-use prevention programs, and creating mentoring opportunities for students". This could shut these heathens up. Oh and your explanation of her refusal not to give up the financial records was brilliant!..."MYCP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is not a governmental agency, and therefor does not have to release it's records simply because a public records request was made". Please clarify your brilliant statement: "The financial statements, as far as I know, are not public record, and does not represent a poor decision on Booker to not release them". OH AND "These are crucial programs that the school district has committed minimal funds to... The school district has dedicated an entire position to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, and she has done a phenomenal job as such...it deeply saddens me to see so many people fighting to rid the school district of employees who spend so much time"... at work??? HMMMMM sounds like co-mingling of funds. You should go into public service like the poster below said. Maybe you could be elected to the county commission or maybe superintendent of the school district. Sour incident? Which programs are questionable? Look at our morals and values??? Your quite the shyster!

PLEEEEEASE

This has to be one of the Greenman kids. Enough! Fire Sunny and get rid of this Randy Acevedo hack and voter getter!

Ask the students

Nicley stated!!! MHS should be proud. I am sure that you have a bright future. The Keys could use an intelligent person in Public Administration. Hurry home after graduation.

Thank You Sunny

When are you comming to visit me here at school. We can go out and hit the local clubs and talk about old times. Dont worry about those uneducated morons down there. They live in a fantasy world. If they saw the real world as I have seen it they would know we are one human family! KUM BAY YAAA KUM BAY YAAA OOOOOOOM OOOOOOOM OOOOOOOM Oh Buhdda!

He won't get a job here

Get in touch with reality. Even jobs in Marathon are filled by Key West bubbas.

Yup!

Even a Marathon Bubba cannot get a job in Marathon with MCSD if a Key West Bubba has someone else in mind, (or feels threatened by the Marathon Bubba's superior qualifications). Think of what happened to a former valedictorian with a masters degree who didn't get hired while someone's nephew with a degree from a third tier college got hired instead. Now check out the "nephew" and how successful he's been. If you don't know who or what I'm talking about, ask around.

If an organization takes TAX DOLLARS

then the financial statements are required to be open for review

It's too bad that the

It's too bad that the citizen writer wasn't able to get ahold of any of the 1500 or so kids that have gone through this program over the years to get their opinion of it. I see a fired guidance counselor was ready with a comment though. I truly believe that this newspaper has decided to pick sides and create news as opposed to reporting the news kind of like the difference between Walter Cronkite and say Charlie Gibson

So how is it you know how many students have gone through

this program, Sunny?

THIS WAS A SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENT THE KIDS HAD TO GO!

They were given a release by the parents but by the cover of it being a school sponsored event backed by "Randy Acevedo" then it makes sense why they all went. A lot of those kids were able to shake off the events psycho babble bull and go on with life, a few became addicted, a few left hid their dispair and a few who were visibly bothered made it to the school guidance fools who are not trained to handle such intense psychological abuse. You being the genius that you are would know that. Those 1500 kids are just immature children who under the right conditions could be made to do a lot of things! We could easily say 1500 kids were psychologically harmed or brainwashed. I lean towards you being one of the ones being brained washed. 1500 kids your real good real good...

WRONG AGAIN!

The students did not have to attend. Students must sign up to attend and have parent permission (signed permission slip) to attend. Genius!

WHOA!!!!! THAT IS WHAT I SAID

The use of the school and Randy's support gave Challenge day a false front of legitimacy! Sorry you took it wrong Sunny!

I am sure

Sunny can clear all of this up once she discloses the financial records. Oh that's right, she denied the public records request. I wonder why?

Keep wondering, maybe you

Keep wondering, maybe you can come up with something. The problem with your request is that I do not believe that it is public record. It is not a governmental agency it is a foundation that runs on donations if what I read is accurate.

I'd like to hear from the thugs who beat up Tom Milone

We should hear from all the kids especially those who have committed crimes, are involved in underage drinking and all the other destructive behaviors that Challenge Day purports to cure. This program is a waste of time and money. Ask the school administrators and they will all tell you the program is a joke.

And about those Bubba Conch thugs....

The parents should be held responsible for the damage and medical bills, as well as being charged with neglect of minors. And of course, since the kids acted clearly on their own, with forethought and malice and committed an adult crime, they should be charged as adults. Evidently the parents thought these thug kids were 'adults' or they'd have not allowed this behavior. What kind of parent lets their kids roam the streets at 2 AM? Certainly not a FIT parent. The problem is these kids learn their behavior from their parents. These are the types who vandalize vehicles of School Board members in the middle of the night when they expose thievery and demand accountability from the Bubba thieves.

I would have assumed that

I would have assumed that the writer of the article would have asked the administrators that question and then again maybe he did and didn't like their answer.

Sunny Booker is our angel! She single handedly saved

our children from bullying, terrorism, swine flu, hurricanes, drugs, violence, child abuse, school bombings, George Bush, Fred Colvard, John Dick, and saving Randy from jail time! She has given us Challenge Day, dancing in the class room. Band camp, and Tina Bilotti! She only cost $100,000.00! I am going to nominate her for the Nobel peace prize!

John Dick please rid us of Challenege day and Sunny Booker!

You helped to get rid of the Acevedo corruption no how about this Challenge day scam!

Investigate this

Why doesn't the newspaper investigate why this issue is so personal between Sunny Booker and John Dick.

So Sunny you admit you have a crush on John!

Woo hoo!

Questionable slant to this article

Wow what a headline considering that only $2,880 was donated by the school district. I thought you were going to say $100,000 was given to this group from the school board. I don't think that was the focus of this article at all. I don't know anything about Challenge day except for what I saw when OPRAH highlighted the program and spoke in full support of the program. But then again I am sure she didn't do the due diligence in her reporting that the citizen writer did.

Oprah

also had a sex scandal at one of her schools that she opened in South Africa. The point is that this MYCP organization can get people to donate money and then they can just divvy it up amongst themselves without having to show their financials. I mean 20K to this one, 20K to that one- makes for a nice little cash cow! Oops, I mean "It's for the children!"

boy, did you hit this on the head!

Follow the money...there's way more than $2800 at stake here. These program organizers have been sucking off of our community for years. Preying on students' emotional problems. They have no statistics to support the program.

WHO IS CERTIFIED?

Are all involved in Challenge Day psychotherapy properly certified by a national board? If not, then shut it down.

Youth challenge program

Challenge day is only one of many different events that are put on by this group of wonderful people. My child is a Senior at Key West High School and participates in the mentor program with elementary students at Glynn Archer School. She goes over once a week and spends time with her mentee reading, talking or just helping with homework. It has been one of the best experiences that she has had at Key West High. Please do not lose this program it has allowed my child to see that everyone is not as fortunate as her and created a community service monster inside her that I am so proud of.

How dare you compare challenge day with the mentor program!

the mentor program gives students experience in actually helping another one on one. Challenge day helped Sunny get her psuedo position of power and especially got her to the $100k a year mark. Dump Booker, challenge day and any other Acevedo scams that are left over!

Nobody compared the two

Nobody compared the two programs it was just pointed out that the mentor program as well as Challenge Day are under the same direction. The "Be the Change" group at Key West High School is part of the whole MYCP organization. This dump anything that Randy Acevedo had anything to do with is ridiculous. This program gives the students that volunteer to be involved an avenue to guided community service like the "Peace Jam" event that my daughter attended with the "Be the Change" group in Tallahassee with children from all over the state through FSU. There she met a Nobel Peace Prize winner and their group started a project to increase the peace in their own communities.

NONE of my tax monies need to go to this program

And that means from the MCSD as well as from the MCBOCC.

And fire Sunny Booker.

Spoken like another selfish

Spoken like another selfish person with lots of money who doesn't want to do a thing to make a positive difference in the life of children. Maybe you will be the target of the next set of hoodlums running the streets without a purpose. It takes a whole village to raise a child. Thank you Sunny and the others involved for doing what you can to make a difference for the children of this community.

How about TEACHING THEM??? Give teachers what they

need. Don't waste any money on Booker. Having interviewed a number of KWHS graduates for jobs recently, I can tell you that NONE that I interviewed knew how to dress, speak, spell, write, type, show up on time, and a few couldn't even use a computer! The 'mommie' of one of them even called demanding to know why her precious son wasn't hired!!!

Nope. TEACH THE KIDS. That's what education is about. Stop wasting money on salary for Booker and give the classroom teachers what they need to teach.

Education hasn't been about

Education hasn't been about just teaching in quite some time but your ignorance is excused because I am sure that you are not a classroom teacher. As you so eloquently point out "The 'mommie' of one of them even called demanding to know why her precious son wasn't hired!!!" you can't even imagine what a teacher has to deal with on a regular basis. As far as giving classroom teachers what they need, how about a program to reduce bullying, or how about a program that teaches children about responsibilty for yourself and respect for one another and their differences, how about a program that supports children through mentoring and community service. Hey maybe we could call it the Monroe Youth Challenge Program or MYCP for short!

It's kind of spooky!

Reminds me of some version of a charismatic tent revival. I wouldn't let those kooks anywhere near my kids. "Leaning... leaning... leaning on the everlasting arms."

Sunny Booker campaigned hard for Randy

She is a very brilliant organizer and marketeer. She saw the strength ofthe challenge day program in it's addictive nature on not the students but the naive parents! She originallysaw this in herchallenge day mentor Judy Greenman wife of "frank I'm gonna get you sucka greenman"! Judy Greenman is strong proponent in challenge day. she and sunny Booker were a fierce force for getting challenge day accepted and part of our educAtional system. Sunny Booker then took it a step farther . She was able to use it's now placement in the schools curriculum as a easy way to market Randy Acevedo's campaign for reelection.

wha'???????????

Female students sitting on male teachers' laps? That sounds somewhat over-familiar to me. Lap-sitting might be fine for kindergarten but seems inappropriate for secondary kids. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned?

No, you are completely right!

There is absolutely NO reason for a student to be sitting on ANY teacher's lap! This is a clear violation of sexual abuse and innuendo laws, no matter what the program. Speaking as a Psychologist and behavior therapist, this goes against all professional, social and moral codes.

Innuendo laws??? Are they

Innuendo laws??? Are they enforced by Rumor Patrol. If there is such a thing as innuendo laws I am sure this comment board is in violation because that is all this is a place where people can make up stuff and post it here. There are enough idiots that read this crap that believe everything that is written here.

William Ayers Must Be So Proud

How about teaching the ABCs before you venture off into the PCs?

This story is screaming... LOOK CLOSER AT THE $$$$

Since the funding comes from private and public donations, the group has to report the expenses to someone. The fact Booker won't show where the money is going tells you right away to be suspicious.

MMMMMMM ..... MMMMMMM..... MMMM

We Love Sonny Booker

MMMMMMM ..... MMMMMMM..... MMMM

Let's make up some more jobs for the party faithful and take away time from teaching the basics

No Brown Shirts?

This is just another reason for home schooling

Judy Greenman

home schooled her daughters for many of their school years. Very interesting, huh?

Challenge Day Is A Bunch Of Baloney Taught By Flawed System!!!

Challenge Day is a bizarre, destructive and fraudulent attempt to make the schools look as though they are doing something constructive. Inept teachers who have not accomplished anything of real accord, in the world at large, masquerade as psuedo-gods, who are going to heal and resolve the sensitive issues that individual children are dealing with, without allowing them the time to 'process through' these issues at their own speed and in their own manner. Some large, distorted and sick Egos are behind this nonsense. One thing we know for certain is that this school system cannot be trusted. Let's increase our academic standing in the world, so that we don't have to go through all this baloney in the hope that our children may feel good about themselves. Why don't we just give them a world-class education?

If this is true...

I believe that the principle of Challenge Day is perverted by asking children to be reveal very personal things about themselves in a very dangerous setting. A collection of forty or so of your peer, is a NOT as safe place. If these are truly the things they are asking young adolescents to reveal about themselves, well, I find the exercise at the very least objectionable, if not downright irresponsible and dangerous. As a victim of sexual abuse, it was not until I was an adult that I was able to truly come to terms with my ordeal, and this, with very supportive parents and professional counseling. Sharing that information in such a setting would have compromised my healing process. I repeat, victims of abuse NEED A SAFE PLACE. As a teacher, who takes the well being of her students to heart, I am very disappointed.

If this is true...

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I read 5 sentences into this article and was aghast. I too am a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of not one but 2 separate relatives and I was whacked out from it for many years. What happens when one mean teenage girls decides her "ordeal" is NOTHING compared to THAT ones and she hates her and wants all her friends to hate her so she shares all the nasty details that have been readily spoken in what has been promised to be a safe place for them to speak. A group setting of their school mates is NOT a safe place. Someone is going to get hurt from this- and I fear the cost will be great- a lost child will be forever lost- and you will be to blame.

OUR TAX DOLLARS

and we CANNOT SEE THE RECORDS??????? Get them out of our schools NOW!
