Exploring Islamorada by foot, bike and paddle

Ever been interested in exploring Islamorada? Well on Nov. 21, teams of three will have a chance to get a first-hand look at the island by land and sea during the Amazing Race of Islamorada.

Sponsored by the Islamorada Wrestling Club and Robbie's Marina, the race is designed to explore Islamorada on foot, bike and over the water -- consisting of a three-mile run, a two-mile kayak trip and a six-mile bike ride -- beginning at Robbie's Marina on Mile Marker 77.5.

"This is an ideal event for businesses, hotels, bars, restaurants, government agencies, clubs or just friends who want to put together a team and compete against others while raising money for a worthwhile cause," said Mark Terrill, president of the Islamorada Wrestling Club, a local wrestling and mentoring program for teens.

Even though it is a chance to get an inside look at the island, it is still also a race and teams must either consist of three people -- one person per category -- or one person who will participate in all three categories. With three divisions -- open, women and high school students ages 16 and above -- winners will be based on their overall time of finishing the course. However, there is also an award that will be handed out for the team or soloist that has the best uniform.

Just remember that each team or individual is responsible for providing their own bikes and kayaks -- the latter can be rented at Robbie's Marina by calling 305-664-4878 or Back Country Cowboy at 305-517-4177 -- and each leg of the race is a considerable distance, so be ready for a good workout.

There is an $85 entry fee per team, which includes a gift bag and lunch for each participating member, but the Islamorada Wrestling Club will receive a portion of the proceeds, which will go a long way in helping the next generation of Coral Shores High wrestlers.

If you want to know anything more about the Amazing Race of Islamorada or want an application, contact Terrill at 305-879-0390 or send him an e-mail at Islamoradasports@aol.com. I'm sure he would be happy to answer any questions.

It sounds like a fun event that is a good way to give back to the community. Good luck to all those that do compete in the event and I hope to see a good turnout.
