Fault caused power outage

A tripped breaker in Marathon probably due to weather spurred a power outage at 6:30 p.m. from Big Pine Key to Key West, Keys Energy Services spokesman Julio Barroso said. An automatic cascade of shutdowns along the system protects against power surges, he added. Most customers lost power for about 15 minutes; all were to be re-energized by 7:15 p.m., Barroso said.

Weather?!

At 600 pm skies in Marathon were clear, the wind was from the north at 10 mph, and the temperature was 83 degrees. Try again. If it was a maintenance issue, why not just say so?

Well at 630pm

It was raining at my house in Marathon. The lights flickered, the TV went off and then everything came back on.

you seem to know an awful lot about high voltage

maybe we ll call you next time leave your number!

High Voltage

I think the voltage is elevated at night to compensate for line drop and additional lighting loads all along the keys. You can hear the sizzle as the sun goes down. Unless thats just the environment doing that. Probably tripped on overvoltage, a fifteen minute outage is nothing down there. Be happy you got lineman willing to keep it all working.

Highly doubtful...

There's no reason to believe KES boosts the voltage at night, and the daytime load of air-conditioning is MUCH greater than that of lighting at night. Besides, you could very easily verify your theory with a voltmeter. The sizzling you hear near the poles supporting high-tension lines is bleed-over, small-scale arcing, as relative humidity increases as the air temperature decreases... similar to what is more pronounced on the rare foggy days we have. And it's exacerbated by built-up salt residue on the insulators. Yeah, we'd like to think the electric utility would have a for-sure reason for every outage, but it's not always possible. And although we grumble and gripe every time the power goes out, they've come a LONG ways since the 70s and early 80s. To KES' credit, they've contracted with outside companies to do a huge amount of much-needed upgrades, replacement of lines and poles throughout their service area, etc.

the sizzling is atmosphere

an insulator could have been compromised in a lightning storm earlier as it degraded the current across it got to high and trips safety devices.without these devices the damage would be much greater.

power outages

15 minutes of no power is nothing to you, but we have to come back to our business and manually restart our computers so our business can continue. When I am out of town, I have to call in someone to do that for me -- so to me, it's not "nothing."

Sounds like a poor way

of running a business. Ever heard of battery backup. I have them at my home and they work like a champ. They are cheap insurance as well.

its called UPS battry backup

are you a skin flint or something generator or batteries real simple.

The only thing HIGH is the fuel surcharge

I'm real thankful everytime I open my monthly statement to see how badly I've been gouged for the fuel surcharge. Looks like they frequently purchase fuel futures in bulk but somehow always guess incorrectly which direction fuel prices will go. It all adds up to the consumer getting the summer sausage on the sunny side no matter how you slice it. Right or wrong, the consumer pays the price.

Well, wait untill you a

Well, wait untill you a senior citizen, all Keys Energy is giving is taking off the service charge of $6.57 cents. That helps our senior's alot when your bill is over $300.00 dollars. what a shame!!!! Why not just let the senior pay what ever they use, and not the fuel charge and service charge. The BOARD needs to really look into this GIVE THE SENIOR CITIZEN'S a BREAK!!!!!!

Why Should Senior Citizen's Get a Break?

My uncle gets over $100K in pensions from working all his life in the military and government. He doesn't need any discounts. Same goes for my parents who are now into their 80s. Where is the rest of the family? I bought my parent's their home. C'mon...enough of this crap. Plan now for retirement.

put up a wind turbine and stop paying

or sit down and stop whinning.you got a better idea
