Board OKs school post

After lamentations about budget woes during an emotional discussion of teacher raises, the Monroe County School Board on Tuesday approved adding a $125,000 position to district administration.

Late into Tuesday's board meeting, board members gave Superintendent Joseph Burke their blessing to hire an associate superintendent, replacing former Associate Superintendent Mike Hen...

Personnel

My comment is, the School Board has let personnel go in the admin building, because of no funds, these were people that worked, they were clerks, & because of the Board the rest of the Admin Building is suffering this, yet the board is spending Money hireing TOP Heavy Mangement Personnel making Big Bucks, as always the Small Working People allways gets the Shaft., Its Time to Re-Elect a new Board when its election time, Enough is Enough, Its time the Board also stop trying to Compare our County with Other Florida Counties, We live at the End of The World, Wake UP Board, As I have said many times, The School Board is a Laughting stock of Monroe County, Assholes.......

too many chiefs not enough indians

too many chiefs not enough indians

Not to cast stones, but...

when are the board members going to learn? I remember while watching the meeting the other night, that Mrs. Walker said we needed to give the new superintendent a little leeway. Isn't that what got us into this mess to begin with, giving the super a "little leeway"?

outrageous

Pay the teachers who actually work - we don't need another suit. When are the board members up for re-election so we can vote them out????

Burke

Burke said the associate superintendent will have his hands full. "[He or she] will take on all the operations functions like construction, transportation, oversight of schools, evaluation of the principals -- all of those kinds of things -- plus human resources and having personnel report to that individual," Burke said. "They would be doing some of the heavy lifting, including running contract negotiations, but I will still be there." What are we paying Burke for? Now I see why they got rid of him in Springfield. He's a "good ole" boy from the north and a buddy of Crist. Same old, same old!

More importantly

what is Bookie Jr going to be doing to justify his salary. They gave him a small change in title and an even smaller pay cut. When they hire this new person, they better be planning to eliminate Bookie Jr's position.

Where is the outrage on this

Where is the outrage on this board in reference to the comment the superintendent made about having people he trusts in certain positions. Isn't that the Bubba system in action? Why was it wrong when Randy did it but it's not wrong now?

Sounds like we've already

Sounds like we've already been down this path.

Maybe

... it's because the people he trusts are honest?

Maybe Randy thought his

Maybe Randy thought his people were honest.

Yeah,

right.

Has anyone taken the time to

Has anyone taken the time to look at the amended budget the board was to approve at the last meeting? It once again appears to be more of the "business as usual" shenanigans. The most glaring thing to stasnd out to me was a reduction in instructional services of approximately $378K. Does this not have a direct impact on the students in the district? One positive is that student services will increase, but only minimally by the rough amount of $41K. The rest is where it gets intresting. Instructional and ciricculum development will increase funding by $45K. Instructional staff will increase by $8K. General administration will increase by $8K in saleries and benifits. School administration will DECREASE by approximately $2.6K a year. Transportation will increase salary and benifits by almost $7K. Community services will increase by a whopping $238K. Bottom line is the money is there to give to the administrative crew and provide other services but they apparently can't find a dime for the teachers.

clean up schools

maybe the new administration can clean up the schools of the drugs and guns that these kids have at key west high school!my stepson keeps telling me about how he's offered crack, cocaine, weed, and pills for sell.of students having gun's in there car's.then he's threatened with physical violence if he where to say anything.this need's to stop!school is a place to learn not deal drug's! he should feel safe at school not threatened

Safe-school woman to the

Safe-school woman to the rescue!!!! 10 hugs a day will solve everything!

Interesting problem

If no one that can do anything about drugs and guns at school is told about them exactly how are they supposed to fix this problem? If it was my stepson I would demand names and I would report them. It can be done without giving your name.

Do you see the problem here?

Do you see the problem here? You are saying these things on a comment board of the newspaper. What you should have done as a parent is gone into the office the next morning and handled the matter.

school drugs

went in and talked but got nowhere!was told ( oh we'll look into it )this was last week.thinking about home schooling, it's safer.

Why does Henriquez still have a job?

With the departure of any Superintendent surely the Associate Superintendent stands down also to make room for the New super and his deputy..... How long does the "Director of Instruction" position last?? This would not be a budget issue but now we are paying for TWO deputies!!

Don't forget we still have

Don't forget we still have Bruce King as the director of assessment and accoutability. Unless his salary has been severely decreased, he was getting paid in the neighborhood of $120K a year. He was and apparently still is responsible for taking test results from practice tests (MBAT and a few others), running them thru a computer to analyze and determine what the general weaknesses were for the students to better prep them for the real FCAT. He would then present the results to the board and if I am correct, the schools to help them create a plan to get the students ready. Now we have Mike put in place to head this "department" (Director of Instruction???). From the looks of things, he is getting paid almost $120K a year to basically read the results and recommendations that someone else prepares. From what I have seen, it sure as heck doesn't take $240K a year to tell me that many of the kids in this school system are lagging in the basic skills of reading, writing and math. Do you want to confuse many high school students? Write a paragraph in cursive instead of print. Ask them to do a mathematical equation and show all work, without a calculator. Ask them to read out loud a chapter from a book anything beyond the level of a Dr. Seuss book and watch them struggle. But I refuse to blame the teachers in entirety for these shortcomings. The bulk of the blame goes to the state and the district administration if you ask me and some to the students for the apathy and attitude they have. After all, isn't it just one big publicity gimmick to say we are an "A" district, an "A" school and tops in the state on the FCAT? Don't we waste 8 years teaching our kids to the FCAT, from the 3rd grade to the 10th grade? Isn't it also about the money that is filtered down to the "A" schools? Hundreds of thousands of dollars all divided up between school administrators, counselors, teachers, even down to the cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers and bus aides? It is time to get back to the basics; provide the teachers and students what is needed in the classrooms, make them a true asset when they graduate, not another unemployed person sitting on a street corner or locked up in jail.

How are you graded on job

How are you graded on job performance? If you were graded on whether or not you come to work on time every morning would you be on time? When you know what you will be evaluated on as far as your job performance goes wouldn't you focus on that aspect of it? Schools are evaluated on how well the students score on the FCAT period so why are you surprised that they focus on that.

Still with the Bubbas??

Didn't anyone notice that the new Superintendent wants to put some of his "former collegues" inplace? Why don't we have an election to pu someone in there that we voted for, not that was forced upon us by the Governor?

Well, you see what an ELECTION did for us before!

With a popularity contest as you suggest, we ended up with the crooked Acevedo family, and their crooked Bubba cronies. This should be a professional position, where applications are submitted, interviews conducted, background checks done, and then, maybe we'd get an honest employee of the people. AND if they were dishonest or did a rotten job, we'd simply fire theme. We wouldn't have to wait for the Governor to remove them while the crook did even more damage! It's time for Monroe County's citizens to demand this position STOP being a Bubba position and become professional for the good of the kids and the taxpayers.

No money for teachers, but

No money for teachers, but always plenty for a useless pig in a suit at admin.

I don't know if you could get a suit for a pig but...

I don't think you could get a pig to lower his standards and "work" at the admin building.

Its because he is a BUBBA!

After the walkout by Leon Fowler and his 20 bimbo teacher followers it is evident that getting rid of Randy is not enough. Now Leon is acting like he is fighting for the teachers. The issue he chose to walk out on was being discussed by Board member John Dick. It is evident that Leon's agenda is to protect the bubba jobs as well as take on John Dick. Funny how leon got angry over statements that directly and clearly blamed Randy Acevedo's raidiing of the funds that should be maintained for emergencies. Johnd Dick was right they should financially restructure the school district. There is a lot of fat to remove: Mark Hooper, Sunny Booker, Mike Henriquez, jeees louise I could go on!

You lost any credibility

You lost any credibility when you called the teachers bimbos. Key West Citizen and whoever screens these messages needs to up the ante on the riduculous name calling. You have become a trash newspaper. I don't mind people making comments but they shouldn't be able to say things like that about people.

It's a comment section from REAL citizens and readers

and it's ok to hear what they have to say. If you have an ounce of sense, you don't pay attention to comments that offend you. It's not up to the world to censor to your standards.

I'm sorry that I have

I'm sorry that I have standards. That is the problem with this community there are no standards.

Truth hurts huh.

They were bimbos because they like Leon believe that randy was innocent! SO obviously one can deduce that you are one too. I'm outraged that you even countered this statement. The real teachers stayed and disagree with Pro randy Fowler! If you stopped buying the citizen ten others will fill the void.

Just like the other

Just like the other uneducated idiots in this community; you assume to much. When a politician sits on the dais and spouts off about how bad things are financially and then approves an entirely new postion at the top that makes more money than 99.9% of everyone else in the organization I say walk out too. I say why don't the teachers all just call in sick for a week so that the politicians will see exactly who keeps the School District in gear.

My thoughts exactly!

Cut the fat, literally, and fire that worthless waste of oxygen. He clearly couldn't do his job and what did he get for it? A slap on the wrist. He's very much to blame for a lot of losses - get rid of him. That'd help pay for his replacement.

Missed the boat...

Burke had the opportunity to remove Henrequez from his administration and instead gave him a very slight demotion. Now we're bringing in someone Burke can "trust" and increasing administrative costs. Burke shouldn't trust any Acevedo appointee. Why Henrequez still as an administrative position is beyond me...

so much misinformation.

so much misinformation.

well...

enlighten us, oh great knower of bubba politics and school personnel decisions...oh wait, that was redundant wasn't it?

WHAT FOR???

The FACTS rarely get in the way....

Good one...you're smart

Good one...you're smart

Caught in the cross fire

It's a shame that the teachers are getting caught in the cross fire. I know several. They work hard for our kids and use their own money to purchase suppies for the classrooms because the school system doesn't provide any. Maby all the admin staff should give up 1/2 their pay so we can actually pay the teachers what their worth.
