KEY LARGO -- The hunt for the family of the 48-year-old Palm Beach County woman found dead in Jewfish Creek Tuesday by detectives continues to no avail as the mystery surrounding her death continues to deepen.
The woman has been identified by authorities, but they have declined to make her name public pending notification of next of kin. The woman's body was found wrapped in plastic by anglers Tuesday morning. The investigation has been ruled a homicide, but detectives have been quiet on any possible leads in the case.
Monroe County Medical Examiner E. Hunt Scheuerman conducted an autopsy, but was unable to determine a cause of death following the autopsy, which suggests no obvious gunshot or stab wounds were found on her body. However, Scheuerman referred questions to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Becky Herrin, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office, said Friday that detectives are now awaiting toxicology reports to come back, which may provide some insight into how the woman died. Those reports will not be available for a few weeks. The woman was eventually identified by her fingerprints, Herrin said.
Further widening the mystery is that detectives and agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement [FDLE] have been unable to find anyone related to the woman.
Investigators have notified sheriff's offices throughout South Florida of their case and FDLE agents have scoured the mainland looking for anyone who knew the woman, but have been unsuccessful, said Kathy Smith, FDLE special agent supervisor.
There was some speculation that some family members may live in New York, but efforts to find anyone there who knew the woman also have been unsuccessful, Smith said.
The woman was described as white, 5 feet 7 inches tall, about 110 pounds with light brown hair and brown eyes.
Detectives ask that anyone with information about the case call the Sheriff's Office at 305-292-7000, or contact Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys. Tipsters may remain anonymous and may receive a reward if their information leads to an arrest. Tips can be submitted online at http://www.tipsubmit.com, or at 1-800-346-8477.
