Three members booted from election board

Three of the four Marathon Election Canvassing Board members were forced to resign Monday -- one day before the city election -- because state law prohibits them from actively participating in a candidate's campaign.

City Council and Canvassing Board members Dick Ramsay, Ginger Snead and Pete Worthington stepped down, leaving City Clerk Diane Clavier as the lone member.

Monroe County Judge Luis Garcia appointed their replacements Monday afternoon, tapping local attorneys Richard Warner and Bill Heffernan and Chapman Asset Management owner Peter Chapman.

The resignations came after an Oct. 15 advisory opinion was sent from the Florida Division of Elections to Broward County Judge Sharon Zeller, specifying prohibited activities for election canvassing board members.

They included serving as the chair or co-chair of an election committee and publicly endorsing a candidate, which includes holding or displaying a sign, wearing a T-shirt or even attending a fundraiser for a candidate.

Ramsay and Worthington said they were unaware of the recent opinion, and Snead did not return The Citizen's phone calls seeking comment Monday.

Ramsay said he attended fundraisers for candidates John Bartus and Mike Cinque, and has a Cinque magnet on a vehicle his corporation owns. Worthington said he attended a fundraiser for candidate Rich Keating, and also has a Keating magnet on his vehicle.

"I was just supporting a good candidate," Worthington said. "I went to his fundraiser and now I'm disqualified."

The Canvassing Board traditionally is comprised of the city clerk and City Council members who are not up for re-election. It oversees the counting of ballots by officials from the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Office, and is the deciding factor should a signature from an absentee ballot be called into question.

Last year, the city had no need for a canvassing board because Monroe County had elections and handled those duties. This year, the City Council election is the only item on the local ballot.

George Needs Your Voice

George is only one vote. Constituents also have a responsibility, and we often screw ourselves because we leave issues to be taken care for by other people. How many times do you call George and express your views and concerns? You can't accuse the man of doing, "Absolutely NOTHING!" when you, the person directly affected has done NOTHING.

The City of Marathon is a Joke

The City of Marathon needs to be dissolved it is full of Bubbas, certain people pay much less than others for the sewer assesments. Some commercial properties (Resturants) are paying very little because they are in with the council members. The city was suppose to be a small organization but has grown into a Tax and spend monster.

You guys should have taken lessons from the "Teflon Don"

Mr. George Neugent. He's got the CYA thing down to a science.

George is the Don

Neugent is the man!!! Remember, politics is perception. Ask the average guy what he thinks of Neugent and they'll tell you that George is the greatest. Sure, he may be whatever you want to call him, but George is smart, he knows most of the County policies and how to navigate the Sunshine Law. Old George gives the perception that he has respect for the regular taxpayers (you know, the little guy) and county employees, is culturally sensitive and travels with a smile on his face. By contrast, some of those council members in Marathon shake your hand and you feel like you need to run and take a shower, they're stinky and slimey.

George is Mr. Do-Nothing

George has been on the County Commission for 11 years. During that time, he's known all about the upcoming 2010 deadline form wastewater upgrades. So, what has he done about it? Absolutely NOTHING! George's constituents in Big Pine and the Lower Keys are screwed. There's no plan, there's no financing, and per EDU costs are likely to top $20,000. At least prior Councils in Marathon had the foresight to get the sewer ball rolling, get at least some funding, and save its residents and businesses well over $100 million.

Just wait till the Takings lawsuits arrive.

He and his bozo constituents will be paying the bill. That's when the tar and feathers should surface.
