Man rescued from research ship
Coast Guard crew members from Air Station Clearwater rescued a 50-year-old Ukrainian man from the Munin Explorer ship 100 miles west of Key West on Tuesday.
The crew aboard the Munin Explorer, a 180-foot Cypress-flagged research ship, hailed the Coast Guard in Key West about 5:30 a.m. saying that Vadym Karavayev was suffering from severe abdominal pain and needed immediate medical attention, reports say.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Clearwater was launched to airlift him, arriving at 7:30 a.m. and taking him to Lower Keys Medical Center by 8 a.m. He reportedly was in stable condition.
MIDDLE KEYS
Desperately seeking tutors
Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA) of Monroe County has a critical tutor shortage in the Middle Keys with a large waiting list of students who need help communicating in English in the LVA English as a Second Language program.
Tutors do not need to know another language to be an LVA volunteer, and all training is free. It only takes about two hours a week to help someone in the community improve their English skills. Call Middle Keys coordinator Maria Triana at 305-393-6064; outside Marathon, call Mary Casanova at 305-294-4352.
