20 YEARS AGO

Liz Newland, Truman Annex Co.'s landscape architect, unveiled the Presidential Park at the intersection of Front and Caroline streets.

50 YEARS AGO

A small brown and white monkey was causing problems in the Newton Street area. Two policemen chased the monkey until it entered the Trumbo Navy base without a base pass.

The Chamber of Commerce and the Navy were trying to stem the spread of a blight that threatened to denude the island of thousands of coconut trees.

The Big Pine Key oil well drilled by Standard Oil was capped at 6,000 feet with no oil or gas found. Gulf Oil was still searching offshore for oil.

100 YEARS AGO

The steamer Miami brought a large concrete plant to Key West to be used on building Trumbo Point for the railroad terminal.

Mayor Fogarty, who was in charge of a donation fund of nearly $8,000, allotted some of the money to vessels that were damaged in the harbor.
