What a way to finish
Conchs wrap up 6-3 season by upsetting Class 6A opponent at home

KEY WEST -- Playing in a Key West High football jersey for the final time Friday night, seniors Stephen Jones and Michel Sohi showed the Conchs and the Key West fans what they'll be missing out on in the future.

Sophomore Clive Georges, however, gave flashes of just how bright that future could be.

Jones accounted for 142 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, Sohi rushed for 118 yards and added three scores, and Georges awed the crowd with his speed as he scored two touchdowns on the ground and picked off a pass on defense as Key West cruised to a 48-23 Homecoming win over visiting Miami Ferguson, a Class 6A team headed to the state playoffs. With the victory, the Conchs finished the season at 6-3, their best record since 2004.

"I knew it was the last one," Sohi said. "I had to come out and have fun."

He wasn't the only one.

On a night where the Conchs were playing solely for pride, they viewed the game as their own personal playoff. After Key West went three-and-out on its first possession and punted the ball away, Ferguson responded with a touchdown for an early 7-0 lead. It was all Key West from there, though. The Conchs didn't punt the ball again for the rest of the night, the defense forced four turnovers, and the 48 points were the most Key West has put up in a game all season.

"They played their hearts out," Conchs coach Jerry Hughes said of his players. "Nobody was tired and everybody wanted to play more. Now it's the bad time when the seniors have to turn their jerseys in. I wish we had some more (games) left."

Jones, who passed for 57 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 85 yards and another score, was left wondering what might've been as he walked off the field at Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium for the final time.

"We really came together now, and it shows how if we came together earlier what we could've done when we played Jackson or Booker T. or South Dade," an emotional Jones said, noting the three teams that beat Key West this season. "I'm not saying we would've won, but it would've been a lot closer and we would've had a lot more heart going into every game."

Down 7-0 in the first, Jones capped off the Conchs' second possession with a 19-yard touchdown run that tied the game with 3:28 left in the period. The Falcons fumbled an option-pitch on the second play of the ensuing drive, and Michael Henriquez recovered the ball to set up the Key West offense at the Ferguson 17. Jones tossed an 8-yard scoring pass to Sohi to capitalize on the mistake and give the Conchs the lead, 14-7.

After forcing a punt on the next drive, Georges got in on the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run that capped a 71-yard march early in the second quarter.

"They couldn't stop us," Hughes said. "This was the best offensive performance I've seen in I don't know how long."

A Ferguson field goal cut the Conchs' halftime lead to 21-10, but Georges intercepted a pass on the opening possession of the third to put Key West in good position again, this time at midfield. Sohi capped off that drive with a 5-yard touchdown to go ahead, 28-10.

"Michel Sohi ran like he should've been running all year -- hard," Hughes said. "He was the intimidator tonight."

Georges added a 25-yard touchdown run in the third, his fifth of the season, Sohi scored on a 1-yard run for his ninth touchdown of the year, and Jones tossed a touchdown to Carlton Howard from 6 yards out to cap the Conchs' scoring midway through the fourth.

Defensively for Key West, Christian Stewart also intercepted a pass that he returned 38 yards to set up the final score, and Paul Leatherwood recovered a third-quarter fumble to set up another score.

"Everybody left it on the field," Jones said. "Not just the seniors, but everybody who got in the game left it on the field."

Late in the game, the seniors got to have one last moment of fun before wrapping up their prep careers. Jones made a big tackle while playing safety on defense for the first time all season, and kicker Cale Hartle got a late carry, his first this year, that was stopped for a 3-yard loss.

"We just wanted to fulfill some of their wishes," Hughes said of the plays.

He thought for a moment and then added, "Plus, it was comical."

Hughes said he couldn't have asked for a better ending to what had been an up-and-down season for his mostly young team.

"With all the adversity that we've been confronted with, this was a great win for us," Hughes said. "It was just amazing."
