Pair of Hurricanes only qualifiers for state finals

FT. LAUDERDALE -- Even with several school and personal records broken by the Coral Shores and Key West High cross country teams at the 4-2A Regional meet Friday at Mills Pond Park, only a pair of Hurricanes runners qualified for the 2A State Final, as neither squad was able to crack the top six mark to advance.

For Coral Shores, Joanna McCoy and teammate Andrea Cockerham were able to qualify for the state meet next Friday, while the Key West boys' squad came up just short by finishing seventh overall as a team.

"It was fabulous out there," said Coral Shores coach Mary Jo Fry. "It was really competitive and the camaraderie was great."

The Hurricanes' McCoy placed second in regionals advancing to the state meet for the second straight season, while Cockerham claimed the 15th and final qualifying spot. Fry said she was excited with the way they ran.

"Overall I'm really pleased with Joanna's and Andrea's performance," said Fry. "Andrea ran a beautiful race. She was focused the moment she set out and knew where she had to place."

The Conchs were led by Aeshton Tomita, who ran a 17:44, the boys team was just 20 points short of moving on to the state. Zack Harden, who has been the boys' top runner all season, was ill during the race and completed his high school cross country career with a time of 18:17 and was the second Key West runner to cross the finish line. Julian Kuntzmann broke the school's freshman record with a time of 18:27.

On the girls side, the Conchs took ninth in the meet. Morgan Nelson, with a time of 20:16, was 17th overall and was two places behind the cut to advance to the state finals. However, Nelson's time was good enough to break the Conchs' school record set by Katie Gonzalez.

"It was a good day, we ran really really well," said Conchs coach Terrence White.

Both Coral Shores squads took 10th place in the meet and the boys top runner, Mike Hampson, was just shy of moving forward finishing in the top 25.

"I was pleased with their performances," Fry said of both her teams. "Most of our girls had personal bests and they now know what it is going to take in this region to make it to state. It's a wake-up call for everyone, but it's going to be tough.

"For the boys it was a little disheartening."

, because we had a lot of seniors in that group. Mike ran really well, but just came up short and I just told them all it was a personal accomplishment for them and to focus on their own achievements. I'm just pleased with their success overall, just to make it to that level of competition."
