Conchs score 1st goal, net 1st win

MIAMI -- It was a refreshing day for the Key West High girls' soccer team as the Conchs scored their first goal and first win with a 9-0 mercy-rule win over Miami Jackson.

Playing with a full squad for the first time this season, the Lady Conchs, 1-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in District 16-4A action, were clicking on all cylinders led by Jasmine Jones' three goals. The game was called at the half.

Robyn DeRoche started the scoring barrage one minute into the game by tapping in a cross from Jones. She scored two goals on the game and an assist returning the favor to Jones on a corner kick. Her second goal came on an Eva Hooten assist. Senior stopper Chloe DeVelasco nailed a 12-yard goal, freshman Lauren Schoneck put in her first goal and Kendall Galvan, who just finished her cross country season, blasted a pair of goals, one on a Jennifer Barcenas assist, and Galvan also assisted on a goal.

"It was nice to get a win and have all the players on the field," said Key West coach Scott Paul. "We've been playing patchwork soccer with players in several different positions to cover for various players who were not available during the first four games. It's not that we're on track with this win, but we're going in the right direction. We still have several new players on the defense who are still learning the basics of playing but they learn quickly and they are smart players."

The Lady Conchs play Miami Central in Miami on Thursday and then come home to host Ransom Everglades at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium.
