MIAMI -- It was not the type of win Key West High boys' soccer coach Jason Clifford expected from his senior-laden squad, but the Conchs' 2-1 victory over district opponent Miami Jackson on Tuesday afternoon extended their early season record to 3-0.
"It was not pretty," Clifford said. "We started off very slow with nothing real eventful during the first half. We out-shot them 9-0 in the first half but just couldn't put it in the net. We didn't have to make a save in the first half. Jeff [Wright] only had to make two saves."
The second half was much the same until the 55-minute mark. Freshman Ricardo Gomez booted a corner kick and Andy Metillus finished for a 1-0 Key West lead.
The Conchs botched even more golden scoring opportunities until the 61st minute, but Metillus scored his second goal of the game and fourth of the season on a nice cross to go up 2-0.
Jackson managed to score an easy goal with eight minutes remaining on a defensive miscue much to Clifford's chagrin.
"It was a lack of communication," the coach explained. "It was their third shot of the game and they did not have a shot the rest of the game."
Late in the game, senior Trevoi Gordon received his first red card of the early season. One more and he will be suspended the remainder of the season, which is a pattern he has established since his freshman year.
"We had a long talk after the game," said Clifford about his senior captain. "He has got to play his game."
Key West gets back on the bus Thursday to face another District 16-4A opponent in Miami Central. Gametime is set for 4 p.m.
