Feds ban fish sales

Recreational anglers and charter fishing boat captains cannot sell their grouper and snapper catches off the docks or to local fish houses after Dec. 16 without buying scarce and expensive permits from other fishermen.

The National Marine Fisheries Service will prohibit catch-selling for snapper and grouper from the Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to Florida, which is und...

Charter Boat Fish Sales

The Feds instituting this ban is actually just redundancy. Even though anyone can buy a commercial fishing license from the state, in order to legally sell virtually any sought after edible species, including grouper, snapper, dolphin, cobia, wahoo, amberjack, etc.,in Florida there is an additional requirement known as a restricted species endorsement. Most charter boats don't have and have never had the restricted species endorsement because in order to obtain it a minimum of $5,000 per year must be earned from selling fish. You can't get the endorsement until you sell that much and you can't sell fish caught that might earn that much so it's a catch 22 situation.

WOW!

Great!'cause this s*** was getting out of control!I was wondering,...:"When will "THE FEDS" step in here and "solve" this "problem"?" TY,TY,TY XXXXXXXX(kisses) to our beloved Goverment, but mostly, my deepest and sincere regards to that federal employee who had not only the vision, but the courage and the determination to say:"Enough is enough." Please excuse me for a minute,...let me catch my breath and wipe that tear. THIS IS AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT FOR ME. YES WE CAN, my fellow Americans. This is the leadership we need! For too long now, this charter boats where selling their catch to whoever and cutting into the business of the chinese farm raised tilapia sold on the American market. For too long now, this charter boats failed to pay taxes on the income derived from selling their catch and thus creating a $ 1 trillion defficit. And for how long "THE FEDS" should have tolerated this tax evasion? This taxes could have been used for a much larger Stimulus for the banks in dire needs in our country, not to mention the auto industry. But all that is over now. So, sleep well my fellow Americans. Wrap yourself in Stars and Stripes, listen to a patriotic tune, and REMEMBER: Don't you dare buy fish from the charter boats. Big Brother is wathing you.

Actually most of the rules

have been in place for years, and they are needed.

The rules here obviously

The rules here obviously don't apply to "conchs".

We usually ride down the street with

the folks that want to buy them....Out of site out of mind....This is a stupid law. They let you sell tomatoes out of your garden...Don't they?

Uhm... not really...

From the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services: "No person or persons can prepare, process, serve, hold or sell food from their private residence". Perhaps it is sometimes gotten away with by virtue of authorities looking the other way, but some licensing is needed to sell produce.

No ! Out of sight ,out of mind is wrong

They aren't tomatoes you grew in your back yard. Without controls our fishery will end up like Jamaica's-, DEAD. Hopefully FWCC will catch you. Also it's sight, not site, which is a location.

An idiot

and a spell nazi

When I go out on a charter

and pay good money for that charter .I will defend the right to do anything I want with the fish I catch. Sorry----I also sell mine(secretly) when I can.

recreational fishermen were never allowed to sell fish

a commercial Federal fisheries permit legitimizes and controls our industry ,assuring food quality ,handling ,temperature standards. You expect a certain grade of sanitation when you buy perishable foods. Commercial fishermen are required to meet these standards. One tool you don't often see FWCC Officers using is a thermometer, but it is an important part of boardings and inspections. It also creates a paper trail of data by reporting landings to assess fish populations. It also protects sellers. Recently Virgillio's was sued by an individual who said he contracted cigutera from fish served there. Through the paper trail they were able to trace that fish to the market it came from and to the individual harvestor and the day and location harvested. Which was not known to have that toxin prevelant. Not allowing charter vessels to sell fish reduces effort and increases fish populations. The practice is called "double dipping" . The charter vessel was paid up front for a service, entertainment. Not to be a food processor. Most charter vessels underice thier catches resulting in product that doesn't meet food standards. Is that what you to eat? Here in Key West far too many restruants buy illegal fish putting you at risk. this will help curtail that practice hopefully. Tim needs do a story on that practice common here. The best places in town are selling you what the busboy caught.

Now I've moved up

I make salads and do prep work when not bussing tables. If I was paid decently I wouldn't have to sell fish illegally. My restaurants owner is a cheap B****, , she paid me less than market price for my lobsters.

Your lobsters??

were those the shorts that had to be cut up and put in the pasta...your both dishonest...she should be fined thousands so that making a couple of bucks won't be worth her while....everyone knows who she is....and you harvesting shorts should be in jail...

Do yourself a favor

and eat at McDonalds. You are a little too worked up over the busboy's "shorts."

Cute, But I didn't write those comments, just the first one

And I should be upset . when someone without a lisc. sells illegally it has a ripple effect in the community. first the legit fisherman lost income, then the wholesale fish market lost income. so I could not pay my bills, and the market couldn't pay it's bills, and the people owed money by those enities couldn't pay thier bills, so eventually you don't get paid either. would it be all right if you had an illegal contractor, plumber, or electrcian, competing against you ? Or an unliscensed Realtor ? Not to mention the tax fraud involved. The Laws are here to protect you from shoddy work , unfair business practices, and rotten seafood. If those lobsters were shorts they never got a chance to reproduce , another losing situation. So maybe you should worked up also. As far as Mc D's , I support my community, thats why I buy locally. Hopefully then my neighbor can pay his house payment.

Life's a bitch

and then you die
