Piggybacking on the City of Marathon's 10th Anniversary party will be a decidedly green companion.
The local group Florida Keys Green Living and Energy Education will be holding the last of four R4 fairs in Monroe County this year. This is the third year GLEE has held the R4 fairs, which provide information and resources on different aspects of green living.
So far GLEE has held the fairs this year in Big Pine Key, Key West and Key Largo, with Marathon's birthday party the last stop.
Some of the services GLEE will be offering at the party will include an organic waterless car wash product and information on how to qualify for a local bank's green loan program.
What was GLEE's biggest annual event, the EXPO, will not be held this year. GLEE officials say they are working with a relative newcomer to the local green scene, Florida Keys EcoWeek 2010, to combine efforts for a month-long event slated to be held next fall. That event will focus on promoting green activities throughout the Keys over the year.
According to GLEE officials, the fairs serve to educate residents on sustainable living, provide information about green products and services and offer a forum for community networking. They are also being held to set up local GLEE chapters to include businesses and local government in setting sustainable goals specific to the communities.
