MIAMI -- The Key West High boys' soccer team went into its Thursday afternoon game against Miami Central full of confidence and even controlled the Rockets throughout the match, but when the final whistle sounded the Conchs took a disappointing 2-1 loss in a very important District 16-4A contest.
"We gave ourselves opportunities, we out-shot them the first half and if they crossed the centerline we took the ball back and got back on the attack," Coach Jason Clifford said. "There were no threats at all -- not one."
Key West had eight corner kick opportunities alone in the first half, but, according to Clifford, the Conchs just did not execute.
"We had the ball at their end of the field, we put ourselves in the right positions, we held the ball on the attack, we were dangerous all over the place," the coach explained.
"We opened up the field, we got the ball wide, we had several crosses in the box but we just could not score. We went wide right, wide left, we put two or three balls off the post and their keeper make two or three saves. He was an adequate keeper but we just did not test them in the first half even though we had plenty of opportunities."
It was more of the same in the second half. Clifford said Central only had two corner kick shots in the entire game, both in the second half and only finished with five shots, three saves by keeper Jeff Wright and they scored on two.
The Rockets scored goal No. 1 near the 65-minute mark and notched their second goal just after the 20-minute water break.
Key West scored its lone goal with about seven minutes left in the game. Andy Metillus crossed the ball to Monell Azard, who finished from seven yards away.
