MIAMI -- In the past two games, the Key West High girls' soccer team has played only one full game, yet the Conchs have two victories.
On Tuesday, they humiliated Miami Jackson, 9-0, in the first half and the game was called at the break. Thursday afternoon against Miami Central, they did the same, topping the Lady Rockets, 9-0, in another one-half, mercy-rule win to extend their District 16-4A record to 2-1-0. Overall, they are 2-4-0 on the season.
After four straight shutout losses against good teams, the Lady Conchs are now playing as coach Scott Paul expected against weaker district competition.
It didn't take long for the Conchs to get on the scoreboard with goals coming at the seven and nine minute marks compliments of Jennifer Barcenas. The junior netted the first goal on a through ball from sophomore Kendall Galvan from 12 yards out followed by a penalty kick which was awarded to the Lady Conchs on a hand ball in the box. Minutes later, freshman Lauren Schoneck took a Jasmine Jones pass for a nice shot on goal to go up, 3-0. Galvan added a goal off a Robyn DeRoche cross.
Paul said placement of the ball across the goal box was excellent leading to DeRoche's first of three goals for a 6-0 runaway.
DeRoche scored her second goal of the game on a nicely placed PK into the back of the net at the 23-minute mark. Coach Paul moved freshman Eva Hooten to the second forward position, which paid off for the Conchs. Hooten fed Barcenas for an 18-yard blast to the far post followed by three goals of her own, two off crosses by Barcenas to the foot of Hooten in front of the goal. DeRoche assisted on the third and the game was called at halftime.
"The test of our players will be when Ransom Everglades comes to town on Saturday," said Paul. "They will be a real deal as far as competition."
Now that we have everyone back where we want them we are looking forward to being tested and getting a chance to battle again."
Key West will take the field against Ransom at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium in a non-district match.
