Unbeaten Lady 'Fins pick up first victory

MIAMI -- The Marathon High girls soccer team picked up its first victory of the season on Thursday, when the Dolphins jumped out to an early lead against Princeton Christian en route to a 5-0 triumph. Marathon had opened the season with a pair of ties against Key West and Westminster Christian.

"They played great," Marathon coach Lynn Landry said of his team. "It probably should have been a lot worse than that."

Taylor Konrath got things going for the Dolphins rippling the net just six minutes into the match, on a corner kick from Katie Landry and the flood gates opened from that point forward.

Two minutes later a Katie Landry pass set up a goal from Jasmine de la Cruz, which was followed by a goal on a direct kick from Landry, putting Marathon up 3-0 just nine minutes into the match.

MARATHON BOYS FALL, 4-0

MARATHON -- PLAYING ON ITS HOME TURF, THE MARATHON HIGH BOYS SOCCER TEAM FELL, 4-0, TO DADE CHRISTIAN ON THURSDAY NIGHT, KEEPING THE DOLPHINS WINLESS ON THE SEASON.

"There were some positives that come out of it," Marathon coach James Murphy said of the match. "I think we are starting to get our formations together. We're still moving people around to see the best way we can compete against teams. We lost 16 seniors, so we are in a regrouping year."

The Crusaders scored three goals in the first 22 minutes of action and the Dolphins were never able to recover. Murphy said because of the early goals he was forced to move Marathon's top scorer Matt DeFillips back to the sweeper position in order to keep the game close.

"That pretty much stopped them from scoring," the coach said. "Matt, with his speed, basically controlled the back. They had two fast forwards and he was able to take them out of the game."

Marathon controlled the pace of the second half, but was never able to knock in any goals, especially with DeFillips playing defense, according to Murphy.

"The second half we were just not able to put the ball in the net," said Murphy. "But on a positive, during the second half that's the best we've played in the first three games."

The Dolphins are back in action on Monday when they travel to Colonial Christian and Murphy said he hopes his team will compete for the entire match.

"Basically what I want from this game is for our offense to pick it up," said Murphy. "I also hope to see us, instead of playing one half, we play a full game."
