KEY WEST -- For the second straight week the Morays upset a first place team this time they thumped the Roncos, 22-15, in Men's Over-40 Jewfish Softball League action last week at DeWitt Roberts Field.
The Morays and the Roncos came out swinging into the nightcap, talking trash and making predictions. The Roncos would take the early lead, highlighted by Bobby "Hookster" Davila's towering three-run homer and his prediction he would hit two home runs. But, he was to fall short with one.
The Morays batted through the order in the second inning, scoring nine runs for a lead that would stand up the remainder of the game. Not even Bobcat "Rally Killer" Mathews, who struck out looking -- seriously in slow-pitch -- could stop the Morays' bats.
Dylan "The Cornhusker" Kibler slugged a trio of two-base hits and singled for three RBI, Harry "Did I Miss That Call" Milliken homered, tripled and doubled sending a pair of teammates home, Scott Russell and "The Fabulous" Al Difabio each singled three times as Difabio etched a pair of RBI and Russell sent three across home plate. Tino Cubria thumped a three-base hit and two base hits, "The Pride of East Lansing," Joe Graciak, and Benny "Pocholo" Aleman each roped a pair of doubles and singled, Mathews, Willie Morales and Brant "Butters" Voss each hammered a double and a single as Chuck "The Wall" Malby cracked a pair of base hits.
The Roncos' Tommy "Lapp Dogg" Lapp went 4-for-4, highlighted by two triples and a double for two RBI, Chris Cassidy "And the Sundance Kid" drove in two runs on three hits, Davila added a double and accounted for four RBI, Ricky "The Washing Machine" Gonzalez doubled twice and singled, Shaun "Turbo" Niles and "Diamond" Dave Sweeting each drilled a double and singled, Joey "Jungle Rat" Diaz singled twice, John "Schleppy" Child ripped a two-base hit as Tom "The Avocado" Haas and Jimmy "The Big Tuna" Hake hammered one hit apiece and Randy "Smoke Em" Okum ripped a run-scoring single.
SNAPPERS 22, JAIBAS 12
The big bats of the Snappers were the highlight as Tony Alfonso went 5-for-5, going yard twice and doubled for seven RBI, and Tommy "Lapp Dogg" Lapp, who was picked up to fill in for missing players, homered, doubled and singled twice for two RBI to lead the red team at the plate. Dale "Big D" Bittner singled four times, Dean Thompson homered and slugged three base hits for three RBI, Javier Ferretti was 4-for-4 with two RBI and Dean Thompson also smacked a home run and singled three times, sending three teammates home. Scott McCollum hammered three doubles and one single for two RBI, Francis Jaycocks whacked two singles, also playing for the Snappers, Ricky "The Washing Machine" Gonzalez singled twice, Jeremiah "The Colombian Comet" Periard singled twice and Tony "El Bigote" Mendez ripped a base hit.
The regularly high scoring Jaibas got no run support from the top of their order, putting more pressure on the middle and bottom of the order that came through, scoring all but three of their runs. The Jaibas came within three in the fourth inning, but no closer as the Snappers went on to take sole possession of first place in the league with an 8-3 record.
Bruce "Slim Jim" Boros tripled, doubled and singled for three RBI, Rick "Light-N" Lively doubled twice, Nick Hogan drove in three runs via a double and a single, Mike Ferrell singled three times, Mikey Rivera slugged a pair of base hits, Mark Garcia nailed two base hits, as Matt "Whopo" McLellan, Fatz Yaniz, "The Outlaw" Jesse James and Bobby "They Call Me Bobby" Lopez each singled.
