Windstorm rates to increase

Monroe County homeowners will see an 11.5 percent increase in their windstorm insurance rates starting Feb. 1.

The state Office of Insurance Regulation announced Friday it had approved Citizens Property Insurance Corp.'s request to increase insurance rates in Monroe County. Citizens is the county's insurer of last resort and most owners have no other choice but to carry Citi...

Remember???

When housing prices were building into this insanely obvious bubble, with the total collusion of the real estate and banking industry? Remember how they hounded people for being "underinsured", because you house was appreciating SO much in value? (Hey, you need to strip some of that ballooning equity for a new car, boat, or vacations? We can sure do that). Well, where are all those letters telling you, now that your house's value is sinking like the Titanic, that you are OVERINSURED??? We need to decrease your coverage! And LOWER your premiums!By half! Because it must work both ways. DOESN'T it?? This business is vile. These premium increases will be used to buy huge mansions all over the world for thier executives.Just look at what they stay in here, when they're stopping by to pick up thier suitcases of money on the way to the Caymans and Switzerland. This is simply evil. But, as always, many will call it good old capitalism.True capitalism is when businesses COMPETE to sell you things you don't HAVE to buy.And get wealthy from it if they do a great job. This is so not that. Not even close. Thank God, I am able to self insure, and it should be one of your primary financial goals, even before other investments). (One more reason to not buy too much house). As many of us as possible MUST escape this ratrace, or they will destroy us with thier greed. There will be no end to this. They, with the banks, know they have you in a headlock. Medical insurance, and expenses may still destroy me financially.(Trying to live a healthy life is self insuring, to some extent). It's not the way it has to be. Or should be. But it's the way it is. Greed. By the way, even though I've paid staggering amounts of insurance premiums in the last 40 yrs.,I've never received even 1 dollar in a claim, incl. medical.I bought me a yacht. And a Rolls-Royce. For some already really rich guy. Just the way it is... Cheers.

As they say.....

You're directly or indirectly responsible for what happens to you.... Start electing folks that don't want to stuff their pockets or have agendas. Which pretty much means you need to clean house on a county, state and federal level. Wake up and smell the roses my fellow Monrovians…you’re getting bent over.

Carruthers and Johnston

got what they wanted...FIRM was a mere stepping-stone to forward their agendas..... Federal windstorm insurance is what we need. But then you'll have to deal with that other piece of wasted flesh....Illeana

Very unfair of you

Your comments are very unfair. My name is Jim Marquardt and I can put my name to my posts. Both ladies have done well for our communities. As for Illeana, term limits can take care of career politicians. Maybe you can focus your extreme energies in a more positive manner?

Ileana has no term limit

as long as Cuban-Americans keep voting her in for going against opening up travel to Cuba for all Americans. They would rather lose their houses because they can't pay for the wind insurance then see American travelers in Cuba. Of course they can go because they have relatives there.

I don't care what you name is or who you are.

This is a comment section and we still can say what we want in this counrty...you must wear a arm band with a swastika on it big boy. I don't like Illeana or the girls from FIRM....Period

Check out the NY Times lately..

Brooklyn, Long Island, Queens, New Jersey and Conn. Residents are getting cancelation notices from their insurance companies for their wind and flood policies. This isn't just a Florida problem, it also affecting northerners more and more. The government has allowed insurance companies to cherry pick policies and hangs the rest of us out to dry .Your protection is only as good as your State Insurance commisioners willingness force the insurance companies to cover everyone if they want to do businesss in the state.Widows and grandmothers are getting calcelation notices for no fault of their own. These people have fathfully paid their policies to these insurance companies for years!

Sounds familiar

Sounds a lot like Health Insurance! I bet half of you outraged at Wind Insurance do not support the health care reform. I guess you only get outraged when it hits you in the eyes. Insurance Companies have lost their way and only care about profit at any cost. Thank Goodness I do not have a mortgage and do not have this rip off insurance. Pay yourself 10k per year in premiums and see how soon you become self insured.

And you idiots will

probably re-elect Ron Saunders, Ileana and Crist. A clear case of the dumb axx.....

This is LEGAL BLACKMAIL.

Are we going to have a 11% rise in rate every year into the future? Many of us that are paying off a mortuage will be paying more for insurance than our mortuage payment. I have already discontinued my contents coverage. That will make up for the 11% increase next year. This is the only business besides the drug companies and the banks who get away with charging LOAN SHARK RATES. We need a NATIONAL WINDSTORM INSURANCE now or we will be seeing rate increases every year until infinity! No one will be able to get a mortuage in South FLorida because the insurance will be unafordable.VOTE OUT the politicians that are compliciate will this LEGAL BLACKMAIL NOW!!!!!!!!!

if you dont like the insurance

then move because us northerners dont want national wind storm ,we dont need it you do.so why should we pay for your misfortune?

Where do you live?

I bet my taxes subsidize an awful lot of what you use every day in your life. Do you come from one of those states with more animals then people, but with HUGE federal $$$$$ flowing in? Thanks for your willingness to help your fellow Americans keep their homes. I hope you enjoy my tax dollars.

tough and ignorant

I can't move fool. Having bought in 03 I am now up side down in value. Do you think I can just snap my fingers and live and work anywhere I want to.---- We need a co-op of the willing ,but the states need help from the feds to set it up.

When all the working people are chased out who will be left ...

to clean your house, ring up your groceries, fix your car? There are many parts of this country that are affected by wind damage every year. California, and the Mid West to name a few. We already have NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE for communitites that need national coverage like the Keys, because private insurance companies do not want to assume the risks. The risks and the costs associated are spread accross millions of policies. The systems are already in place. It would be very easy to just add a optional wind component to it. For a communty and a country to prosper and succeed we must all help one another! Your arogance and greed will destroy this great country!

With the values of our homes at rock-bottom...

... why are we still paying higher and higher premiums to insure them, hm??? And don't tell me premiums are based on construction costs to replace them -- we know better. When home values were unrealistically inflated, the insurance industry saw an opportunity to raise rates so they could make investments for their stockholders. Homeowners didn't mind because they'd eventually sell at huge profits... but no more. It's more a matter of insurance companies having made bad investments than real actuarial statistics that caused insurers to lose money. They sure didn't lose money on the measly payout of one new (and cheap) roof on our home out of the 32 years we've paid for insurance.

Why any increase

Citizens have not had any major claims Since wilma and NONE this year in the whole state of florida. There is no justification for any increase this year esp with everyone struggling financially. The office of insurance regulations doesn't work for the people. They want to suck the people dry. How about an article stating how much Citizens have taken in for the past 3 years via premiums and how much they have paid out and how much were administrative costs and how much were the bonuses for their executives. We are being screwed by an insurance firm that has the gall to call itself ”Citizens Insurance“

I hope FIRM can stop the "glide path"...

At some point soon! 11.5% increases compounded anually will result in rates almost doubling in 6 years, and tripling in 10 years. No one will be able to afford a home with a mortgage anymore in the Keys. The only folks who will be able to afford to own a home here will be rich people who buy second and third homes with cash and don't have to carry insurance. Everyone else will be driven out.

More Short-sales and home

More Short-sales and home Foreclosures, just what the rich want. Come on Citizens, your doing a great job contributing to the economy.

you probably ride one of those foreign scooters

too,buy an american car this country would turn around in one year, keep sending our jobs overseas and thats where your going to have to go to work whats left, your insurance wether it be health home auto if you dont do my dishes you dont eat sleep or drive
