Jailer jailed in domestic argument

A Monroe County corrections officer found himself on the other side of the bars and suspended from his job Wednesday night amid allegations he struck his wife and 10-year-old daughter during an argument in their home.

Gregory Neal Johnson, 43, of 1906 Dewey Road in Sigsbee Park, was released from the Stock Island jail Thursday after being charged with domestic battery and child abuse.

Kimberly Johnson called 911 about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday to say her husband had punched her in the stomach, put her in a bear hug to keep her from calling the police, and punched their daughter in the head twice when she came to her mother's aid, according to Key West Police Department reports.

Conversely, Johnson claims his wife hit him during the argument, reports say.

Police say the altercation apparently began when Johnson was preparing to pack a suitcase and his wife grabbed his arm to calm him down, reports say.

Johnson did not return The Citizen's calls seeking comment.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office suspended Johnson with pay pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation, spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

"Anytime one of our own is arrested it's tragic," Sheriff Bob Peryam said. "But that said, we cannot tolerate anyone that breaks the law, and when one tarnishes the badge, it tarnishes the badge of all of us."

Johnson was hired in January and has no disciplinary history with the agency.

He was released from jail on pretrial services, meaning without having to post bond pending his appearance in court. If he does not appear, a judge could issue a warrant for his arrest and impose a bond on any future release from jail.

Jailer Jailed - But You Let Him Out

Whom ever thought it was a good decision to let him out without even posting bail may also need to be jailed. Are there no domestic violence laws in Key West? Does anyone cares what he appears to be capable of? What about child abuse laws? Why is this person recieving special treatment-because he works at the jail? Who is protecting the mother and children? Who is monitoring his actions? Someone in the community with authority needs to please stand up and help. Did you know that she is a military member who has sworn to protect and defend freedom and democracy? Who is going to protect her and the children?

Oh please

How many of you actually read the police report? It's online, and you OBVIOUSLY have internet access. It takes two to tango and in this case, there was most certainly a tango going on. It was unfortunate that a child got caught in the middle, but her being hit was accidental, even by the child's recollection. Bunch a paranoid busy bodies, the whole lot of you.

Tacky

I can't believe you would post her name and address. Do you have no tact? Post his name fine, but as the victim she and her kids should be allowed their privacy. Now you've subjected the poor kids who are probably already traumatized to rumors & such at school. It's clear you only care about your "story" and not the people involved.

Just one of many. The MCSO is crawling with these types. It's

just that most spouses just take it and don't complain. They also don't complain when their spouses hang at the strip clubs every night, getting their lap dances. Makes one wonder about a spouse that would allow that.

Not related to this story ..

but I have to comment on todays crime report section ... YOU GO GIRL! ... that was great. If the communinity leaders will not come together to solve the crime problems, the citizens will. The police should be riding or walking around undercover with tempting things to grab or steal on their person to rope the remaining losers in jail.... or does that make too much sense?

I agree. AND I suspect these are the same two Bubba seed who

robbed a house on Whitehead a few months back. Were they on a silver-ish bike? The KWPD was called when we saw them there, but the cops chose not to respond until 25 minutes later, sending one lone officer who strolled around the grounds casually. This was long after the two little Bubba brats took off on their bike - one pedaling and one on the handlebars. KW Cops and KW Bubba seed - goodness! We're just plain blessed, aren't we?

THAT IS DISGUSTING THAT A FATHER WOULD HIT THEIR DAUGHTER

KEEP HIM IN JAIL BEFORE HE KILLS A BABY OR SOMETHING!IT TAKES A VERY WEAK MAN TO HIT WOMEN

Jailer accused of domestic and child abuse.

You should keep those kinds of comments to yourself until you know all the details. It is being investigated. Innocent until proven guilty.

Get the whole story,

Instead of badmouthing people that you don't know, you may want to get the whole story instead of just this journalist's opinionated view, thats only written in an attempt to sell more newspapers.

Black-N-Blue

Law enforcement careers and families are a tough mix... behaviors and emotional characteristics that are an asset and even cultivated at work are often offensive and dangerous at home. I don't condone domestic violence or child abuse but, if this Officer is proven guilty he will likely lose his job and his family will lose his income. Is this in the best interest of his children? Or do we as a society turn our back on those who do this difficult and dangerous work just because we find the end result distasteful? An Officer has to be aggressive, assertive and learn to adrenaline dump at stressors. Does this mean they gets a free punch or slap at his family’s expense…. No!!! But, our officers and their families need non-judgemental help when work and home problems create an enivorment which fosters abuse and violence.

It's in the best interest of his children to get him away from

a father who hits little girls. Their mother obviously has a career. The idea that the family NEEDS an abusive father for his income, or that a family NEEDS 'two parents', even if one is abusive, is outdated and dangerous. It breeds another generation that tolerates abuse or who feels it's 'ok' to hit others.

And it's not disgusting that he'd hit his wife too?

He is weak, for sure. However, one needs to look at the kind of person who'd want to walk around carrying a gun and hanging with crooks. That would be a very weak person. The mental makeup of law enforcement in general, is that of a criminal. They are just BARELY on the right side of the law - sometimes.

I agree...never hit a

I agree...never hit a woman/kid. However, before people take sides...what would you say if his wife was hitting him while he was trying to leave? Or possibly cheating on him?

It's sad...

It's sad that you think this way - I pity your ignorance. Don't generalize law enforcement; the majority of officers are hard-working and dedicated to doing the right thing. People with your attitude are weak and never on the right side of the law, thus it makes sense you'd carry that bias.

Ignorance? That comment was written by the abused ex-wife

of an MCSO officer who knows so much about his crooked thug buddies that the MCSO scum continued to harrass her even after her dirtbag ex was fired and left town. Don't call people ignorant who know the facts. Those who allow that kind of bullying behavior and violence by law enforcement are the weak ones, governed by peer pressure and a lack of basic morals.

Due process?

How about we wait for the trail before convicting the guy. :shakes head:
