School contract mystery builds

The schools superintendent is investigating the arrangement between a contractor the district hired to do its low-voltage work and a subcontractor Y-Net inappropriately hired in its stead.

The School Board was not asked to approve a subcontract as required with James and Tonya Melvin, a Lake Worth couple who own a home-based business called Infranet, according to the Florida...

CASE FOR LIMITED GOVERNMENT

Taxpayer funded, government operated entities will always fail, because they attract untrustworthy people who believe 1) they are entitled to whatever they can steal 2) will not get caught because there is no accountability 3) if caught, punishment, if any, is minor. Our founders drafted a constitution that should have prevented government involvement in commerce, education, medicine, insurance, etc. We ignored our constitution and we are suffering the consequences.

He will get away with it

For sure he will be another that gets away with it. He has worked for the district for how long and he doesnt know the procedure? Yea sure, tell me another one. There are so many at the MCSD that are friends for over 20 years, they are not going anywhere, they will get away with it. Burke is not effective. Seems like Burke is too friendly with those doing wrong, he needs to take a stand for whats right... not to help his buddies.

What most of you ignoramuses don't know

is that there are thousands and thousands of 'low voltage' lines and things that need to be unplugged and plugged in EVERY DAY! All kinds of little things that you all don't even understand. It's too technical for you.I happen to be very smart. This stuff doesn't just happen! Somebody needs to DO it.You have to be very highly trained. Our pay reflects that.I unplugged the wrong thing once myself!! It's a LOT of work! We don't invoice EVERTHING! But we're busy invoicing it right now, just to make you happy!EVERYTHING,incl.turning on the light switch when we enter a room! We're gonna be like lawyers, now! All you 'experts' in IT need to be in my shoes for ONE day! You'd be so scared. You know what can happen if you unplug the wrong thing? You could lose your internets! THEN where would you be?!!Sure, we aren't cheap, but we are WORTH it! If you lose your internets, you might as well close down the schools! You can't survive without it. Just how much is that worth? $580,000 is NOTHING!Do you even know what will happen if you set up a wireless router wrong? IT WON'T WORK! Do you have ANY idea how far it is to Melbourne? You 'know it all' wannabes make us real experts sick!

Who's the ignoramus? Your post is illegible.

Poor sentence structure, poor grammar, bad spelling and punctuation. You are the ignoramus. It's a sputtering, unintelligible rant. I like that you use such heavy technical terms that non-IT folks such as us would never understand, such as 'low voltage lines' and 'things that need to be unplugged and plugged in EVERY DAY!' 'internets'...geez, I could go on and on.

AND Genius, perhaps you should realize that most ALL of us have set up our own wireless routers and wireless print servers and our own networks many times over. We've wired our homes for sound systems. It doesn't take a genius to do that. It takes someone who can read instructions and follow them. Since you can't write, and since you have that pathetic, entitlement Bubba attitude, I can only assume that you are unable to READ either.

Huh

I could not understand a thing you are trying to say.

I tried to warn you.

That it was just to technical for you! That's something your gonna have to deal with!Even tho were very smart IT people some of us dont make very good teachers. Espesally to dum people, you know what i mean?

LOL

I didnt understand what you were saying because you are uneducated. Take a college writing class, then come back and post the comment. A rocket scientist couldnt even figure out what you were spewing about.

Wow. I am really scared if

Wow. I am really scared if you are actually an employee and an IT "professional". I spent my whole life in IT and what went on here was a crime. Are you worried you might actually have to do your job if the crony company contracts go away. You really are an example of everything that is wrong with this city and our school district. My 7 year old kid can set up a wireless router.

Wow

Thats the truth.. I have been in IT for a long time and couldnt understand a word. College communication course comes to mind, that person should take some classes.

Right.Your 7 yr. old probably plays the violin too.

Sure, if you, as a responsible parent, thinks it's safe to have a 7 yr. old playing with 'low-voltage' lines!He/she may be able to plug in the right wires, but will it actually WORK! If I do it, it WILL! Sometimes.

Bring in the DA and start threatening jobs

maybe that will bring out the truth. This is another coverup by some people on the school board, administration or in the IT dept who do not want the truth to be EXPOSED. I think we need a BIG overhaul in administration and for those administrators to start working for the ludicrous big paycheck they get. Also eliminate the suppose incentives for all of them. If their big paycheck is not enough incentive...show them the door. It just looks like the finance dept was a rubber stamp for someone in the admin who wanted to spread the love to their friends. The finance dept must have overlooked millions in bad contracts over the years. Is Burke really up to do the job that must be done...Eliminate the dead wood and the incompetents. It is our kids and our money!!! It is not about a free ride anymore.

The problems are also in Marathon

Marathon High School is going down hill, the new building has trash all over the place on any given day. Lack of disapline by the administration has resulted in lack of direction to the staff. Burke needs to look at the construction department or should we call it the destruction department.

Lack of disapline...

Is there a disapline shortage? Gee, I should have stocked up. See, that's what happens when one lacks discipline. I certainly hope that you weren't born here and that English is not your first language, otherwise your lack of knowledge of English orthography would seriously impede your credibility in all things pertaining to education. Just heads up, I wasn't born here and English is not my first language, however my parents held me accountable for my grades. I would never have had the nerve to blame a teacher. I'm sure that it's the administration and the teachers at Marathon High who are spreading the trash around. Above and beyond teaching students, who are resistant to learning because nary a book is found in their home, they should also be assigned to trash duty. Why not be a good citizen and volunteer? I do.

What is the mystery here?

What is the mystery here? St James approved expenses well beyond what was authorized. Why is he still working? The more you uncover the worse the district smells.

Doesn't look like anyone did

Doesn't look like anyone did anything wrong. They were contracted to do a job and they were asked to do more work than the original contract asked for and they were paid accordingly. Nothing against the law in that that I know of. Now if it comes out that they paid a salary to a school board employee then yes that would be something to put on the front page.

Let's use the "Moniqe Principle"

As with the stand taken by the state attorney's office, no crime was committed because it was approved by the department head. No crime, just many violations of policies by both the board and contractor. I just wonder how many contractors doing work for the board will now look at the possiblity of unfair business practices by the school board. How can you award one contractor pay for additional work beyond the scope of their bid and not pay other contractors for work requested to be provided beyond the limitations of their contract?

I believe given the scope of

I believe given the scope of the work and the amount paid, it should have also been put out for bids. Possibly what you have is a blatant violation of policy. Y-Net was also in violation of their contract for subbing out the work without approval of the board. The sad part is, it was going on for three years that we know of, apparently without question. Now, for the real question that I have; why are we letting the IT department head present the invoices and explain how it was justified? Does the finance department not keep copies of paid invoices? Let's have finance produce the original (undoctored) invoices and then ask for an explanation. Sounds like we are going to get another explanation like we did for justifying a "retreat" (or was that "retirement") party expense.

Now THAT'S the crooked Bubba way of thinking

If they knew they had to have a contract, and then did work over and above and were paid for it, then it's unethical at best. The illegal stuff, though, is when St. James authorized work over and above what was authorized by the board - to the tune of $380,000 or more. Do you people think money just grows on trees? OR have you been on the take so long that you have no concept of the value of honest money?

Who are "you people"? I know

Who are "you people"? I know who you are and that is an idiot. If I have a contract with someone to do a specific amount of work and then that person asks me to do more work for him and is willing to pay me for it how exactly is that unethical? I have a company that mows my grass and yes I have a contract with them, last summer I asked them if they would plant some trees for me and they did and billed me extra for it. I paid the bill and am now trying to figure out how it wasn't ethical.

good lord

Do you have a Board that makes decisions for you? No. Do you have policies in place that dictate how contracts are given, paid, or authorized? No. Your home lawn care is not comparable to a School District's contract...So you, sir, are the idiot!

I think that person was

I think that person was speaking from the point of the person doing the extra work and whether or not it was unethical to accept payment for the extra work.

I have to agree.

I have to agree.

Sublet

Today's companies are now moving toward contracting thier I/T departments because it is cheaper, you have companies that can repair computers over the net and because of a consolidation of talent prepare better Web sites and they can hire a local person to do wire concerns, this saves companies lots of money those that I know about are paying 75% less when they get rid of in house I/T departments. Where this can go wrong is when the managers depend too much on the contractor or has a deal or Kick back which may be the case with MCSD, the college should also think about hiring out the I/T department, ever try to register for a class at FKCC on line, the Web site looks pretty but is hard to get anything done and provides little information.

Ridiculous thinking

"it doesn't make sense to suspect Danny. He's simply trying to help the students by providing the service. He has nothing to hide."

Helping the STUDENTS? What a joke. Typical lawyer-ese I'd say it's more like helping himself to the tune of over $350,000 more than the contracts stated. Wonder how much of that went into St. James pocket? Is he getting kickbacks or is he just incredibly stupid? No matter which, he should be fired at the very least, and possibly prosecuted.

Mystery to Whom???

Just evidence a few more of the self-serving who will get away scott free

Just another example of Randy's incompetence...

We're now looking at almost 1.5 mil in squandered money. Teachers had to buy supplies while his wife brought furniture.

St. James has got to go - disgraceful abuse of power. Lake Worth people doing work here - HEY here's an idea TEACH THE STUDENTS TO DO IT - no wait lets teach them how to avoid work and responsibility. Fast buck artists should be working the tourists not our educational system. Shame on all of you.

Is this what you taught them Bookie? Nice legacy, skirt the rules so my family benefits first.

School Board-Super-District Staff--Frivolously Spend Our Money.

Aggressively protecting the assets of the taxpayers who fund every aspect of the school district, along with ridding the system of salaried employees who are corrupt, compromised and ineffective, is the number one priority for Superintendent Burke. So far he has been slow to respond and negligent in his remedies. This credible foundation must be laid, before any serious improvement can be made in student achievement. Our schools should be made good enough, so that even School Board Member Duncan Mathewson, would consider enrolling his children in them.

isnt it a little late
