Conchs struggle on road, win streak snapped at three

FT. MYERS -- The Key West High boys basketball team struggled out of the gate and was never able to fully recover Saturday afternoon at Cypress Lake.

In a non-district matchup, the host Panthers jumped out to a 13-point lead after the first quarter and held on for a 64-60 win over the visiting Conchs, who had their three-game win streak snapped and fell to 3-3 on the season. The Conchs will get a chance for revenge on Jan. 23, when Cypress Lake comes down to Key West.

"We came out flat," said Key West coach Paul Davis. "The long road trip was no excuse. We missed several layups, couldn't box out or rebound and we were basically forced to play catch-up the whole game."

The Conchs eventually did catch up -- they even took a one-point lead in the fourth -- but the Panthers were able to pull back away, thanks in large part to their 3-2 zone defense catching Key West off-guard.

"We really didn't push the ball like we normally do," Davis said. "But I was still happy with the way we came back."

Irekaz Womack led Key West with 14 points, while Justin Reyes, who hit a pair of 3-pointers off the bench, and Keith Valdez finished with 10 points apiece.

"We know we can either go north or south from here," Davis said. "I think as a team we're going to come together."

The Conchs will get a break for the holidays before returning to action Dec. 29 at home against Whitman Hanson, a school out of the Boston area. Leading up to that game, Davis said he already has some areas that he wants to work on in practice.

"Boxing out, mainly," the coach said. "With the layups, the guys know what they need to do, they just need to do it. I think we'll be a much better team when (Cypress Lake) comes down to play us in January."
