Henry Woods in coma
Political adviser suffers aneurysm Christmas Day

A local political consultant, publicist, volunteer and one-time candidate for office is in a coma in Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami after an aneurysm felled him on Christmas Day.

Henry Woods collapsed midday Friday and later was airlifted to Miami.

Woods, 57, remained in a coma Monday afternoon "and the prognosis did not look good," said Robert Walker, executive director of AIDS Help Inc., where Woods works as a part-time grants writer and author of several education articles about the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS.

Walker said Woods' longtime partner had called his family to be near.

"Right now we're hoping for a miracle," Walker said. "Here's a guy who did everything right -- didn't drink, didn't smoke, played tennis every day. Henry's our go-to guy anytime we need something planned, organized or written. He just loves to be involved in this community."

Woods is an ardent follower of local and national politics. The Arkansas native worked on Bill Clinton's presidential campaign and later coordinated former Mayor Jimmy Weekley's mayoral runs.

In 2008, Woods ran for supervisor of elections, but lost to longtime incumbent Harry Sawyer.

Woods is an adjunct political science professor at Florida Keys Community College and the owner of a consulting company that handles publicity and press releases for such organizations as the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum.

Weekley on Monday asked the community to keep Woods and his partner, Lee Skillington, in their thoughts and prayers. "Skilly" was scheduled to meet with doctors and neurologists at Mount Sinai late Monday, Weekley said.

"This is a big loss to us as an organization," Walker said, "but it would be an even bigger loss for the community."

Henry Woods

I was involved with Henry in politics during college at the Univ. of Ark. and have always know him to be a fighter, a go'getter, and a fair person. My prayers are with him and Skilly and others who knew how far Henry could reach. Dana Bone Teichart, Chicago, IL (formerly Batesville, Arkansas)

You are in my prayers and thoughts

Henry and Skilly, 2009 has been a dreadful year. I pray that you bring a good omen for 2010. You have and are in my constant thoughts and prayers and I extend my offer to do anything I can do to be helpful. Stay strong and hopeful, David K. (formerly of WDC and since 1991 of SS, MD, hoping you know who I am).

Hope you pull through,

Hope you pull through, Henry. God bless.

YOU CAN DO IT HENRY!

Henry- Not too many years ago an official of my hometown Texas city also suffered an aneurysm. Dire results were predicted for him also. He fought to survive and recover and in the end became a very successful City Manager. He had no more strength or fight in him than you do in you. Rest, recover and return to us... YOU CAN OVERCOME THIS CRISIS. I hope nothing but blessings for your future.

Sad in Toronto

Henry is an awesome man and we smile every time we think of our times together in KW, eventhough it's been a while. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Henry and Skilly. Much love and strength, Maurice & Garry (Toronto)

Henry Woods: A Good Friend

I worked with Henry years ago when we served on the staff of Senator David Pryor of Arkansas. The great thing about Henry is that he makes any place he goes better. I am praying for the best. Rep. John Charles Edwards, Arkansas House of Representatives, Little Rock, Arkansas

Henry, You are In My Prayers!

Gosh, I was sad when I heard about this turn of events. Henry is one of the most incredibly loving people that I've ever met in my life! I helped him during his campaign in the Upper Keys and had the honor to work and learn with him and from him at AHI, and I've never had so much fun with a candidate and a friend. My heart goes out to his partner and his family, and I am praying for a miracle..... Love, Millie A.
