Condo prohibits beach access

A new sign and partial fence blocking the shoreline sent a clear message: A waterfront condominium's management does not want outsiders walking on the beach in front of the complex.

While the "Private Property: No Beach Access" signs remain, 1800 Atlantic removed the illegal fence early Wednesday after The Citizen raised questions about it, and Key West code officers learned...

1800 atlantic

somebody shoulf jump on this..it's illegal to block access to the beach from the mean high water line out to the ocean. c'mon folks lets all work together.

Beach Access

This all began with this group of nudist, KWFB announcing Berg Beach at 1800 Atlantic was a nude beach. 1800 has a petition online to attempt to keep the these people out of the line of sight of their children. Now they have to block the beach to keep these people from wandering onto their property nude.

Yeah... A handful of people

Yeah... A handful of people who want to push their views on the rest of us. Take your clothes off at home I am not interested in giving up beach on this little island for you. Of course, the businesses also support this since it might bring another dollar into their pockets. Any tourist is a good tourist. Please forgive me for forgetting...

Well...

Anything as architecturally ugly as 1800 Atlantic, I wouldn't care to pass by anyway. Still looks like a prison.

Casa Marina

also restricts access to the beach in front of their property. This will be interesting.

State or Federal law forbids them from doing that

I believe it is a State or maybe Federal law that says that the area at the waters edge, not sure how many feet inward, are considered to be State land and therefore any person can walk there. This has been attempted before I belive just down the beach and they lost.

1800 Atlantic Beach

Don't understand what makes this news..the issue has been sliced, diced and analyized endlessly over 20 years ago. The Association owns the land out into the water for a considerable distance. It is their right to prohibit non-owners from trespassing on private property. Courts have ruled, previusly, that anyone may pass through this area -- they just may not walk on the privately owned land...in oher words, they are more than welcome to swim across the beach area as long as their feet do not touch the private property.....

Tear it down.

Tear it down.

Outrageous

They will not get away this.

What ever happened to the

What ever happened to the old key west where no one was so worried about fences and gated communities? Most of these people are part time residents and I hope they loose in court.

The Old Keys is gone for good

What's left is a bunch of I got miners and whiners....This wave started when property price started rising....all the smart folks took the cash and got the hell out of dodge....The place sucks now.

You got that right!

Gone forever. Plus the folks who manage 1800 and those who complain there are a bunch of ridiculous, greedy grab asses. To think that you own the beach or the outlying area offshore just because it is there is just as ignorant as getting angry at someone who parks curbside in front of or across the street from your home. Especially when it isn't marked residential or it isn't blocking your driveway. You don't own the freaking streets! What makes you ignorant fools who paid to live in that hole think that you own the ocean too? Stupid. Lets call a condo association meeting to debate who should get the rights to the urchins, horseshoe crabs, seaweed beds, square groupers, turds, tires , fish (dead and alive), and whatever else might be there.

I am not a got miner or a

I am not a got miner or a whiner. Just someone overwhelmed trying to pay my bills, raise my kids, and work 2 jobs. When I see crap like this, it makes me sad that people can be so shallow to care if someone walks on "their" beach. Wow... I hope they can import help from Cuba since soon no one will be left here but rich and homless.

Lawsuit waiting

to happen , you can't restrict access below the high tide line ; regardless if you own the bay bottom or not

Ask Sonny McCoy

He was the local representative hired by the architect to usher the project through the city. They used the baybottom to calculate the density, since there was not enough upland property to justify the number of units. It was the same ruse he used at the Ocean Key House. McCoy also got his cousin, Roger Swift -- who worked for the city before he was sent to prison -- to certify that there was adequate sewage capacity to permit 1800, even as manhole covers were blowing off the street and raw sewage was running in the gutters. All part of the Federal Lawsuit filed back in the 1980's. Ask Sonny for the details.

Uh oh. Now you started something.

His defenders will be coming out of the woodwork to tell you what a saint he was, and how he made the sewers smell sweet on thier streets.A terrific skier. And by the way, he was not an egomaniac.

Really?

If true, I wonder if using square footage that consists of underwater areas is legal. If it isn't, I wouldn't have a problem with ordering that this building be torn down or modified until it complies with regulations.

Golly, the things I learn when..........

I read these replys. Amazing what has gone on in this area ...........

How True

I'm glad SOMEONE has a memory!

Sonny McCoy continues to be a boil on the butt of the most

corrupt construction projects in Key West for the past 40 years or so. Can't wait for him to end up doing some time for his sexual harassment crime. It's a shame we can't force him to do time for the crimes he committed against the citizens while part of the notoriously crooked Gang of Three. At least his name isn't going to be on that disgusting airport.

Let's just stop right here on Sonny...Please...

There no way we all have the time to chronicle his "contributions" to the history of corruption in Key West(and Monroe County). Does the bandwidth that would be required even exist? Perhaps later, when I feel stronger...

I Remember..........

When it was being built word was it was sinking into the ground.
