Commission may reject BCCLT lease
Waterfront circus also among items on agenda

The dream of developing 6.6 waterfront acres could end Tuesday for an affordable housing nonprofit that made several financial missteps that led to its $1.7 million debt.

The Bahama Conch Community Land Trust (BCCLT) has long wanted to develop a portion of the Truman Waterfront with affordable housing, retail space and a cultural center, but a recent audit has revealed cases of suspected fraud in what City Commissioner Clayton Lopez called an elaborate grant-kiting scheme.

The audit was the final nail in the land trust's coffin, according to Commissioner Barry Gibson, who on Tuesday will propose rejecting a 99-year lease of city property.

"It's unfortunate, but I don't see any which way we can go forward with this," Gibson said Wednesday. "I don't think we have time to wait on the BCCLT anymore. There is no reason for us to wait while the BCCLT figures out what they're going to do or how they're going to reorganize."

Gibson acknowledged the wording of his agenda item reads as if he is lobbying for approval of the lease. The wording simply has remained the same each time the lease has been discussed, he said.

"Given the state of the BCCLT, I don't think anyone will support the 99-year lease," he said.

Commissioners may support a two-year contract extension for City Manager Jim Scholl, and are expected to discuss Scholl's continuing career with the city on Tuesday.

In other upcoming commission activity, commissioners likely will authorize the Walker Bros. Circus to produce a "small family circus" at Truman Waterfront from Jan. 29-31.

The City Commission also will decide whether to grant a franchise agreement to the Boston-based CityView Trolley Tours to operate sightseeing trolleys in Old Town.

The City Commission meets at 6 p.m. in Old City Hall, 510 Greene St.

PLEASE PLEASE DEVELOP THE

PLEASE PLEASE DEVELOP THE LAND WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND TASTEFUL THINGS YOU CAN THINK OF AND GET THE TOURISTS HERE AND KEEP THEM COMING EVERY YEAR,,,,,THAT IS KEY WEST AND THE TOURIST TOWN THAT WILL DRIP MONEY, IF YOU WANT THE KEYS LIFE, LIVE IN KEY HAVEN OR SUGARLOAF,,,

YA THINK!

DUH!!!!!!! No, let's wait until they pay the 1.7 million that they owe, re-organize and re-hire Norma Jean so she can keep on stealing Federal and State monies! C'mon Commissioner's!

Now let's also make sure the Spottswoods don't get

the Truman waterfront also. Our City Officials need to realize the voters are tired of our money being given away to pet projects for their cronies. Hey McPherson , hows that waterpark coming? Maybe you and Acevedo can tear tickets and park cars there.

While I agree the BCCLT does

While I agree the BCCLT does not deserve this land, watch closely what happens for great Key West entertainment. First our city planner will decide the "best use" is a resort or condo, then the developers will be all over this land. The Spottswoods will pop up and say how great it will be to add a hotel to the mariina they are building with our tax money. This is such a tired rerun of a bad TV show with all the usual players. You can forget any benefit to Bahama Village now. This area will be a continuation of the Mallory Square tourist trash and nothing for local residents. What a surprise.

Dream On....

It's gonna be a casino! The only green space you'll see will be the felt on the crap tables.

Zoning Prevents Housing

There were many stipulations regarding the property when the city received it from the Navy. Housing is not part of the plan. However, a water park is! My recommendation is to keep the space green, add some landscaping and benches. One day a better use may reveal itself. But for now let's keep it a green park.

Hahaha

When the Navy transferred ownership of Poinciana to the City, there was a provision that the units would remain "affordable." As soon as the Navy turned its back, the rents DOUBLED. The Navy does ZERO follow-up on these land deals.

Zoning Prevents Housing

In this economic climate, landbanking with a "green" park is not a bad idea.

Too bad your recommendation

Too bad your recommendation doesn't mean a thing to our city leaders. There will be hotels, casinos and cruise ships. Wake up, it is no accident the BLTCC was put under all this scrutiny. Rossi's plan to open the bridge to this land from Mallory Square is part of the master plan. Who needs parks when you have a huge house with a pool or live on the water in Key Haven. More tourists and drunks for Duval Street are all that matter in this town.
