Flagler project set for late finish
New Town detours continue until February

The new year did not bring completion to the new sidewalks along Key West's Flagler Avenue, which remains closed from Bertha to White streets. Residents now can expect a Valentine's Day reopening of New Town's main artery.

Work on the new sidewalks began in July and was expected to take about six months, but "the original January completion date did not take into account our blackout dates for holidays," said Karen Olson, the city's project manager.

Crews did not work on holidays to alleviate noise in the neighborhoods, Olson said.

Also, the scope of the project changed during the work to include replacement of a water main that was in bad shape, and would have required repair or replacement soon after the new sidewalks were finished, said Gary Bowman, the city's general services director.

"The public and the residents have been gracious and not really beating us up too much with the rerouting and the traffic through the neighborhoods," Bowman said. "When it's finished, things will be a lot safer for everyone."

The project has been in the works for more than five years, and includes the installation of sidewalks where there previously were none. Workers also raised the height of the crown of the road, which is expected to lead to better drainage, City Commissioner Barry Gibson has said.

After the road is reopened, city workers will landscape it on both sides, Bowman said.

The total construction price tag is about $1.4 million, Olson said. The city is paying $300,000 and the Florida Department of Transportation is footing the rest of the bill.

The project required intense negotiations with some Flagler Avenue homeowners who, over the years, had encroached on city property with landscaping, fences, stone walls and mailboxes.

Truman and White

Truman and White- does no one remember the fiasco that was truman and White? How many business owners lost everything because of the shoddy slow work done there? I never see ANYONE working this site- I see coffee being drunk- men chatting like hens- where's the authoirty figure? Hey Mayor Cates- take a few unannounced rides over there in the next few days...see how it makes you feel.

flagler debacle

Do the Bubba's build in any kind of penalties for cost and time overages on their contracts? Southernmost City is a joke! Acevedo is just the tip of the iceberg- It never fails to amaze me when I see what these people drive on a supposed five figure salary!!!

Flagler Project

This is amazing. It's no wonder this project has taken so long. In the beginning you would see only a few worker bee's with the entire section of road way shut down. Then one delay after another. Not to mention no work on the weekends and extended holidays. This relatively minor project could/should have been completed in a few months with proper staffing. The impact on neighboring streets has been profound. The city owes the residents a HUGE apology for dragging their feet on this. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if officials announce yet another delay...saying this time we really do mean completion in march....april.....may... oh well let's just play it safe and say summer of 2010!! trust us!! lol

The Detour

Knowing it would be six months in use, why was the detour not upgraded with a 3-way stop at Atlantic and Bertha, flashing yellows on White at Flagler, and a traffic officer at Bertha and Flagler during rush hour? Anyone tried to turn left off Bertha on to Flagler at 400 PM on a Friday lately? Or to turn from Staples on to Bertha at that time? Plan ahead planners! Focus! jimijr

What a bunch of BS. The

What a bunch of BS. The project manager says they did not account for the holidays. Hello... Did you think they would be canceled this year? Just another example of a local company sucking money out of the city. Interesting that they did not mention the company doing the work or if there were penalties for finishing late...

It's just another fine road construction management job....

The Flagler Avenue job has got to be managed by the same geniuses who were in charge of the PAVING job this summer between Stock Island and "the Triangle". Remember that? Cops sitting on College Road in their air conditioned cars, absolutely NObody directing traffic...at drive time....and vehicles backed up for light years in the heat? Yup! Sounds exactly the same to me. Mysteriously, when everyone complained about it....they woke up and decided to finish the job....at night...like everywhere else in the Keys. Huh! (Are you getting a message here???)
