Norland tops Key West in district tournament championship, 64-37

MIAMI -- The Key West High girls basketball team got a third shot at District 16-4A foe Miami Norland on Saturday, but like the previous two contests between the teams, the Vikings proved too strong.

Norland, which finished a perfect 10-0 in district play during the regular season, claimed the district tournament championship with a 64-37 win over the Conchs in the finals Saturday night at Miami Central. Both teams had already clinched state playoff berths, but with the loss, Key West (16-7) will have to hit the road Thursday to open the state tournament at either Archbishop McCarthy or Cardinal Gibbons, who played for the District 15 title Saturday night.

"We were in the game in the beginning, but we didn't get a lot of calls," said Conchs coach Glenn Hayes, whose team shot just three free throws against 26 attempts by Norland. "It was a learning experience. We know we've got to play ball, get up early and play our game."

Ja'Taure' Mathis led Key West with nine points and Alexsa Rahming added eight. Shanyia Watson and Taryn Weller each scored six, and Shelisa Page and Tinesha Mitchell each finished with four. Chelsie Storr, the team's leading scorer during the season, was held off the scoreboard.

With four days to prepare for Thursday's playoff opener, Hayes said he and the Conchs will work on making sure everyone is familiar with their role on the team.

"In the heat of the game, a lot of people forget what they're supposed to do or where they're supposed to be, and that really disrupts us," the coach said. "We've got to play more as a team. When we do that, we don't have problems."
