Returning With The Hardware
All 14 Conchs advance as team claims District 16-1A Championship

MIAMI -- The District 16-4A Championship could have not gone much better for the Key West High wrestling team, as the Conchs accomplished both goals set forth by coach Chaz Jimenez. The first-year coach said he expected for his team to return to Key West as district champions and for all 14 Conch wrestlers to advance to next week's 4-1A Regional Tournament. The Conchs matched their coach's expectations on Saturday with 12 wrestlers reaching the finals match at Hialeah Gardens High.

"Normally I like to be humble, especially in victory, but we dominated the meet," said Jimenez. "The district isn't as good as I think it was last year, but I also think we did a lot better. Now we celebrate tonight, then forget about it as we get ready for regionals."

With 12 of the 14 Key West matsmen in action on Saturday reaching the finals and all 14 placing in the top four, which qualifies them for the regional meet, Jimenez said that early on he had a feeling his team was going to match his goals for the tournament.

"Early on I was pretty confident," Jimenez said about his team's chance of accomplishing those goals. "After the first round the boys looked really good and ready to go. After the semifinal, when we had 12 in the finals, I knew we had a good shot at that championships. I didn't know the score, but if you put 12 in the finals then you are pretty much going to win it."

The Conchs not only won the meet and the hardware, but did it in a dominant fashion. Key West's final team tally of 247.5 was 121 points better than second place team and host school Hialeah Gardens, while Florida Christian took third with a final of 118. Coral Shores took fifth place and top Hurricane wrestler Yordan Polanco, who qualified for the 1A State Championship last season, didn't make his weigh-in of 125 pounds, thus ending his season.

For the Conchs, Austin Glouvna (103-pounds), Max Llama (119 pounds), Cody Van Buren (135 pounds), Ryu Wada (140 pounds), Fyrland Sanon (160 pounds), Paul Leatherwood (215 pounds) and Houston Wynn (285 pounds) all captured the District Championships on Tuesday, while Randy McPhee (113 pounds), Casey Parks (125 pounds), Alex Fernandez (130 pounds), Alex Rocco (145 pounds) and Tim Czernik (189 pounds) return home as district runner-ups. Also on the mats for the Conchs were St. Pierre Anilus, who finished third in the 171-pound weight class, and C.J. Robinson, who finished fourth in the 152-pound weight class, and each both qualified for next week's regionals.

"I'm extremely proud of the boys," said Jimenez. "They've done everything we've asked. They've worked hard for this all year long, not just during the season, and it's great to see some of the rewards of all that work."

The Conchs will be back in action next weekend at the 4-1A Regional Championships at Cardinal Gibbons. Despite all 14 Conch wrestlers making it to the regional meet, Jimenez said there is still room to improve and work to be done.

"The ultimate goal is still making it to the State Championships," said Jimenez. "We won the districts, now we have to see how many we can get past next week. We always can get better, there were some mistakes made (on Saturday), so we just have to keep working and grinding through some stuff.

"But we have a great coaching staff and I want to thank everyone that has helped out with the program. From Coach Moeller to my assistant Brian Flanigan and everyone else including all the help at the Police Athletic League, it has all paid off and it a great feeling."
